DLsite (ディーエルサイト), operated by the Japanese company EISYS, Inc. (株式会社エイシス), is an ecommerce storefront website and digital distribution service for downloading and selling a mixture of all-ages and adults-only doujinshi, doujin games, digital manga, light novel e-books, software, computer games, Android apps, and similar goods. As of 2022, DLsite had reached over 9 million global users.[2] The service adapted its current name in January 2019.

Key Information

History

[edit]

DLsite was established by Aoki System Co., Ltd. in July 1996 under the name "Soft Island" (ソフトアイランド). After Aoki System was renamed as EISYS, Inc., the site's name changed to DLsite.com (ディーエルサイトコム) in January 2001. In March 2003, DLsite partnered with Digital Media Mart (currently DMM.com) to create the doujin section of DMM.ADULT (predecessor of FANZA [ja]), which ended in August 2005. In January 2004, the website was refreshed and it released the English language version of the site. In January 2005, EISYS became a subsidiary of Livedoor Co., Ltd. By April 2010, the number of registered circles exceeded 10,000.[citation needed]

In May 2010, Livedoor spun off EISYS and, in turn, DLsite, which became a subsidiary of Geo Corporation. In May 2011, the website was refreshed again, and some categories were removed or reorganized. In February 2018, DLSite announced that it would start publishing games on Steam and would start a translation service business. "DLsite.com" became simply "DLsite" in January 2019.[3]

On 11 May 2023, DLsite issued a temporary restriction on publishing AI-generated content.[4][5][6] On 15 February 2024, DLsite announced the platform renewed the guideline of selling AI-generated content, opened a new space for selling AI contents, and lifted the restriction issued before.[6]

In March 2024, some creators reported that DLsite ordered them to change the description of their works to comply with policies from credit card companies. For example, altering the word loli (ロリ, Loli) into hiyoko (ひよこ, Hiyoko; lit.'chick').[7] In April 2024, EISYS announced that all their platforms have suspended credit card payments from Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.[5][7]

Translators Unite

[edit]

In November 2021, EISYS and DLSite announced a service called Translators Unite.[8] This service aims to allow DLsite to crowd-source translations for its materials in a way that directly supports creators in exchange for residuals or commission.[9] This is also intended to redirect the enthusiasm for online scanlation towards legal distribution. Manga translation work is accomplished through a tool called the MANTRA Engine, which is also partnering with Pixiv-FANBOX.[10]

In 2023, DLsite added support for nine more languages, bringing the total to fourteen supported languages.[1]

Overview

Introduction

DLsite is a major Japanese digital distribution platform operated by EISYS, Inc., specializing in the sale and download of doujinshi, indie games, adult-oriented content, ASMR, voice works, manga, light novels, and other 2D digital products.[4][5] The platform primarily caters to independent creators within the otaku and doujin subculture, offering a marketplace where creators can sell their works directly to consumers.[2] Launched in 1996, it has grown into one of the largest online shops dedicated to otaku content in Japan.[2] The service emphasizes doujin (self-published) works, including adult-oriented material, and features daily updates with a vast catalog of over 1 million products.[2] DLsite supports a global audience with multilingual interfaces and staff, including English, Chinese, and Korean (as of October 2023, over 11 million registered users worldwide and more than 76,000 registered creators).[2]

Content Offerings

DLsite offers a diverse selection of digital products, primarily doujin works created by independent circles, spanning all-ages and adult (R18) categories with distinct content types in each.[6][7] All-ages content focuses on non-explicit material intended for general audiences. This includes doujin and indie games such as PC titles developed with tools like RPG Maker and smartphone games/apps; voice dramas and ASMR recordings; manga, CG collections, illustrations, and webtoons; as well as light novels and related reading material.[6][8] Adult-oriented content, often labeled as R18 or male-oriented, features doujin and indie games with erotic elements (commonly called H games); voice dramas and ASMR with adult themes; manga, CG collections, adult comics, and illustrations; anime and video animations; and other explicit formats.[7] Specialized lines cater to targeted audiences, including Otome and TL content (female-oriented romance), Boys' Love (BL) works centered on male-male relationships, and voiced comics that combine audio narration with comic visuals.[8]

Scale and User Statistics

DLsite has established itself as a major digital distribution platform, characterized by its extensive user base, vast content library, and large creator community. The platform has over 11 million registered users worldwide.[2] It hosts over 1.9 million registered works, encompassing a wide range of doujinshi, indie games, audio products, and other digital items.[9] The platform supports an extensive creator ecosystem, with over 76,000 registered creators and circles contributing content.[2]

History

Founding and Early Years (1996–2000)

DLsite was initially launched in July 1996 as Soft Island by Aoki System Co., Ltd. (later reorganized and renamed EISYS, Inc.).[10][11] Aoki System Co., Ltd. had been established in November 1994.[12] The Soft Island service emerged as one of Japan's early dedicated online platforms for digital distribution, focusing primarily on doujinshi (self-published works), indie games, and related digital content within the otaku and doujin subculture.[10][11] During the late 1990s, the platform operated on a modest scale, serving as a pioneering digital storefront that allowed independent creators to sell and distribute their works directly to consumers via downloads, laying groundwork for what would become a major hub for such content in Japan.[13]

Rebranding and Expansion (2001–2010)

In 2001, the platform was rebranded from Soft Island to DLsite, establishing a distinct identity within Japan's doujin and indie digital content ecosystem.[14] This change reflected the maturation of the service operated by EISYS, Inc., which had evolved from its earlier incarnation. A key step in international expansion occurred in 2004 with the launch of an English-language version of the site, broadening access to its catalog of doujinshi, games, and other 2D content for non-Japanese users.[15] In January 2005, EISYS became a subsidiary of Livedoor Co., Ltd., supporting further platform development during this growth phase.[10] These developments marked DLsite's transition from a niche Japanese service to one with emerging global reach, setting the stage for increased creator participation and content diversity by the end of the decade.

Modern Developments (2011–present)

In 2011, DLsite underwent a major website refresh, updating its interface and functionality to improve user experience as the platform continued to grow.[13] In 2018, DLsite expanded internationally by beginning to publish and localize select indie games on Steam, enabling broader global access to Japanese doujin titles through official translations and distribution.[10][16] In January 2019, the platform simplified its branding from "DLsite.com" to simply "DLsite." On May 11, 2023, DLsite temporarily suspended the distribution and sale of AI-generated works, including manga, illustrations, and related content, citing the need to monitor community impact and evolving perceptions of AI-generated material.[17][18][19] This restriction aligned with similar measures taken by other Japanese creator platforms around the same time.[20] On February 15, 2024, DLsite revised its guidelines and launched a dedicated section for AI-generated content, reopening sales under updated rules that included limits on the number of AI elements per work.[21] In April 2024, DLsite temporarily suspended Visa and Mastercard payments effective 18:00 JST on April 3, 2024, later extending the suspension to American Express, while citing ongoing operational adjustments.[22][23][24] As of February 2026, DLsite restricts AI-generated works to a maximum of 3 applications per month per operator. Creating multiple circles under the same operator to exceed this limit is explicitly not allowed; such attempts are treated as violations, potentially leading to registration restrictions or suspension of transactions. The policy remains unchanged from its documentation in late 2025.[25]

Platform Features

Browsing and Discovery Tools

DLsite provides several tools to help users discover and explore its extensive catalog of doujinshi, indie games, ASMR, voice works, manga, and other digital products. These include basic and advanced search functions, rankings of popular items, genre-based browsing, and category navigation, with clear separation between all-ages and adult content.[1][8] The platform features a basic search function accessible from the homepage, where users enter keywords to find products. Selecting genre tags or series names from product pages or category menus displays related results, facilitating discovery of similar content through tags and associations. Results can be sorted by popularity or release date, with options to adjust display layout and items per page.[8] For more precise discovery, DLsite offers an advanced search tool that allows filtering by multiple criteria, including keywords, genres (with up to selection and specification), release date ranges, price ranges, supported languages, product formats, average ratings, VR support, and sale status. Users can exclude AI-generated works, include only bonus point or free products, and apply discounts. On mobile devices, an age filter separates content into all-ages, R-rated, or adult categories. Search criteria can be saved for repeated use.[26] Rankings highlight trending content based on sales and popularity, covering daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly periods. Users filter rankings by genre, release date (e.g., last 30 days), product format, and supported languages, enabling focused discovery of popular or recent items within specific categories.[27] Content is organized into distinct categories and genre lists, with separate sections for all-ages material (e.g., doujin works, voice/ASMR, manga/CG, general PC games) and adult-oriented content (e.g., R18 doujin, H games, adult comics). This separation ensures appropriate browsing experiences, with adult content placed in dedicated areas like maniax or books sections. Genre browsing is supported through dedicated lists and tags, aiding exploration of niche interests.[1][28] Daily updates introduce new releases, often highlighted on the homepage, complementing release date filters and rankings to keep users informed of fresh additions.[1]

Purchasing and Download Process

The purchasing process on DLsite starts with users adding desired products to their shopping cart directly from the product detail pages. Multiple items can be accumulated, and the cart contents, including titles and prices, are reviewed before proceeding. Users can remove items or mark them for later consideration.[29] From the cart, users proceed to the confirmation page, where they review the order details, apply any available points or coupons to adjust the subtotal, select or confirm a payment method, and finalize the purchase by clicking the confirmation button. Various payment methods are accepted, including credit cards (primarily JCB), though payments from non-Japanese credit cards may not complete successfully in some cases; international users may find it easier to pay via purchased points.[29][30][31] Upon successful payment, purchased products become available immediately for access and download through the user's account on My Page, purchase history, or dedicated tools such as DLsite Play (for browser-based access and downloads) and DLsiteNEST (a desktop application for library management and downloads). Downloads are typically provided as compressed ZIP files, which users extract using standard tools; large files may be split for easier handling.[32] Many DLsite products are delivered as DRM-free digital files, meaning they have no technical copy protection after download and allow use subject to the product's copyright terms and platform policies prohibiting unauthorized redistribution. However, certain titles—particularly games and software—employ PlayDRM, a serial key-based protection system. Users receive a 16-digit license key upon purchase, which must be noted and used for initial online authorization when launching the product. This one-time authorization prevents unauthorized redistribution while allowing offline play afterward, though it may impose limits on the number of installations or require adjustments for certain security software.[33]

Account and Settings Management

Users manage their account and notification preferences primarily through the My Page feature, a centralized hub for personal settings, purchase history, favorites, follow lists, product ratings, reviews, and other user-specific options.[34] To access My Page, PC users select "Account" from the upper right corner of the homepage and then choose "My Page" from the dropdown menu; smartphone users tap "Settings" in the top-left menu bar, which redirects to My Page.[35][36] From My Page, users navigate to "Email Settings" (also labeled "E-mail Settings" or "Notification Preferences") to control the types of emails received from DLsite.[35][37] The email settings allow toggling of several notification categories, including the DLsite Newsletter (containing exclusive coupons, sale details, and general platform information), DLsite comipo Newsletter (focused on manga-related updates), product update notifications (for purchased or favorited items that are updated, removed, or scheduled for delisting), sale notifications (for discounted favorited products), notifications when favorited upcoming works go on sale (requiring individual opt-in per product), and alerts for new releases from followed circles, brands, or publishers (requiring individual opt-in per creator). Users can also select their preferred email language.[35] To unsubscribe from promotional newsletters, users access Notification Preferences on My Page (or via the "Newsletter" link at the bottom of DLsite pages) and uncheck the "Receive special offers" box; changes may take a few days to apply.[37] Many users adjust these settings to reduce the frequency of promotional emails, which have been a source of user complaints. (detailed in Promotional Emails and User Complaints) Even after opting out, some transitional emails may still arrive while removal from the mailing list processes.[35]

Creator Ecosystem

Registration and Sales Process

To become a seller on DLsite, creators must first register a "circle" (a term used for creator groups or individuals) through the platform's online system, which is available globally and free of charge with no registration or annual fees. The process involves accessing the circle registration page, agreeing to the terms, entering required information, receiving a temporary registration email, and completing registration by clicking the verification link in the email. For residents of Japan only, an alternative mail-based method exists for first-time registrations, requiring completed forms and physical submission of a work, though online registration is recommended for its speed and simplicity, particularly for digital products. [38][2] Once the circle is registered, creators can upload and sell works via the Circle Management Menu by selecting New Work Registration. This involves entering basic product information, uploading the main digital file (in zip, rar, or 7z format up to 10 GB), optional demo versions, product images (such as a 560×420 JPEG cover and up to 10 sample images), and a required description of approximately 300 characters. Creators set their own sales price, taking into account Japan's 10% consumption tax and DLsite's service fee (which varies by price point and is deducted from earnings). After submission, the work undergoes review for operational verification, compliance with censorship and decency standards, and other policies. Upon approval, the work becomes available for purchase. [39] Creators may also register a product as an announcement first to generate interest pre-release, then finalize sales by navigating to the Product Announcements section in their List of Works and using the Final Registration button, which transitions the page to the live product URL without needing to delete the announcement. This online process is emphasized as faster and simpler than mail-based alternatives, especially for international creators, with no restrictions on how long works remain available for sale. [40][2]

Support Tools and Resources

DLsite supports independent creators by offering dedicated marketplace categories for Creator Assets, which provide essential production resources. These are separated into All Ages and Adult sections to accommodate different content types.[4] Production software and tools available include game development engines such as RPG Maker MZ and RPG Developer Bakin, enabling creators to build role-playing games and other interactive content with accessible interfaces.[41][42] Image materials encompass icon packs, tilesets, and illustration resources, such as high-definition modern/futuristic icon sets and fantasy-themed asset packs, which creators can incorporate into game visuals, manga, and other 2D projects.[43][44] Audio materials include sound effects packs and music bundles, such as inventory sound collections and emotional music sets, designed to enhance voice works, games, and ASMR content with ready-to-use auditory elements.[45][46] These purchasable resources allow creators to streamline production processes by leveraging pre-made components, focusing their efforts on original storytelling and creativity within the doujin ecosystem.[4]

Translators Unite

Translators Unite is a crowd-sourced translation service launched by DLsite on November 9, 2021, to connect creators with translators for legally translating manga and audio works into multiple languages.[47] The initiative enables registered translators to request permission from rights holders to translate eligible works, which are then sold on the platform with quality reviewed by DLsite's native language staff before release.[48] Manga translations are facilitated through the MANTRA Engine, an online browser-based tool developed by Mantra, Inc., that uses image recognition and natural language processing to detect speech bubbles, automatically blank them for text insertion, and provide an intuitive interface for translators to input text without needing advanced design software.[47] This system allows translations to proceed directly in the browser after creators grant permission and upload image data, eliminating the need for original source files like PSDs.[47] Translators receive residuals through a profit-sharing model, where they earn a commission from sales of the translated works rather than upfront payments.[47] Creators select from multiple profit distribution plans, and translators can opt to work as volunteers with all proceeds going to the creator.[47] DLsite handles release and distribution, with a voting system available for users to select preferred translations if multiple versions exist for the same work.[47] Initially focused on a limited set of languages, Translators Unite has expanded to support translations into 13 languages, aiding the platform's broader multilingual accessibility.[49][50]

Internationalization

Multilingual Support

DLsite provides multilingual support through its user interface, allowing users to browse, search, purchase, and manage content in their preferred language. As of 2023, the platform supports 14 languages: Japanese (the primary language), English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, Swedish, Thai, and Vietnamese.[3] This expansion reflects DLsite's efforts to accommodate its growing global user base. Support for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean was introduced around 2020 to improve accessibility for major East Asian markets.[47] In October 2023, DLsite added nine additional languages—Bahasa Indonesia, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, and Vietnamese—in response to rising demand from overseas customers.[3]

Global Accessibility and Restrictions

DLsite is accessible worldwide, with dedicated interfaces supporting multiple languages to facilitate international use. However, certain works—particularly those featuring specific adult-oriented tags or themes—are subject to regional restrictions, making them unavailable for viewing or purchase from outside Japan or in select countries.[51][52] These restrictions often result in messages indicating that purchases cannot be made from the user's country or region, affecting access to parts of the catalog.[51] Users outside Japan commonly employ virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass these blocks by routing their connection through a Japanese IP address, enabling full visibility and purchase of restricted content. Recommended options include free services like VPN Gate or paid providers such as Proton VPN. After gaining access, users may purchase DLsite Points through alternative methods (such as external sites supporting mainstream payments or cryptocurrency) to complete transactions when direct credit card options are limited.[51][52] Such workarounds are widely discussed in user communities, though they may carry risks related to service reliability and compliance with local laws.[51]

Controversies and Policies

AI-Generated Content Regulation

In May 2023, DLsite temporarily suspended the sale of fully AI-generated works in response to rapid advancements in AI image generation technology and concerns about the impact on traditional creators. The suspension, effective from May 11, 2023, affected works tagged as "AI-Generated" in categories including manga, CG illustrations, videos, creator assets, and any other formats where AI-generated images constituted the main content. Sales of works tagged as "Partial AI Use" continued unaffected, and categories such as novels and games were not impacted. DLsite cited difficulties in promptly updating policies to match evolving AI capabilities and the need to protect existing creators as primary reasons for the action. The platform committed to ongoing monitoring of community impact and feedback to refine its approach.[17][18][19] On February 21, 2024, DLsite lifted the broad suspension by launching a dedicated AI-generated content section, allowing sales to resume under new guidelines. Separate subsections were established for all-ages content at https://www.dlsite.com/ai/ and adult content at https://www.dlsite.com/aix/. Works using AI only partially continued to be sold in their original doujin or smartphone game sections, while fully AI-generated otome/BL works and smartphone games remained temporarily restricted from new registrations pending further preparations. The updated policy introduced strict requirements, including mandatory tagging as "AI-Generated" or "Partial AI Use," disclosure of AI usage in product descriptions, a monthly limit of three AI-generated work registrations per circle, a cap of 500 AI-generated images per single work (or 1,000 for eligible sets/compilations), prohibitions on photorealistic AI images, and mandatory genital mosaicing in compliance with platform standards. Violations, such as inaccurate tagging or exceeding limits, could result in added tags, registration restrictions, or termination of business relations. These changes aimed to balance creator access with user transparency and community concerns.[21][25] As of February 2026, DLsite restricts applications for AI-generated works to a maximum of 3 per month per operator. Creating multiple circles under the same operator to circumvent this limit is prohibited and considered a violation, which may result in registration restrictions or suspension of transactions. This policy remains unchanged from its documentation in late 2025.[25]

Payment Processing Issues

In April 2024, DLsite temporarily suspended payments via Visa and Mastercard credit cards, effective 18:00 JST on April 3, 2024.[53] An update on April 4, 2024, extended the suspension to American Express cards, effective 18:30 JST that day.[53] The official announcement from DLsite's operator, EISYS, Inc., did not specify reasons for the change but advised users to switch to alternative methods such as JCB (the only remaining credit card option), QR code payments (PayPay, FamiPay, LINE Pay; Japan domestic only), convenience store prepayment, net banking, electronic money, or deferred payment services (atone, Paidy; Japan domestic only).[30] The suspensions followed pressure from international card networks regarding DLsite's handling of adult-oriented content, particularly after the platform's earlier adjustments to content tags and descriptions.[54][55] These changes limited international users' access to credit card payments, as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express remain unavailable as of the latest updates. In response, DLsite introduced its own payment alternative, “Minna no Ginko Payment” (みんなの銀行支払い), on October 6, 2025. This semi-in-house system enables direct payments by linking a Minna no Ginko digital bank account to a viviON account ID, bypassing traditional intermediaries. It is restricted to users in Japan, as overseas account opening and app access are not supported by Minna no Ginko. DLsite has promoted adoption through discounts and rewards.[54][56]

Promotional Emails and User Complaints

DLsite sends promotional emails to users through its Newsletter (also referred to as Email Magazine) feature, which delivers information on special offers, coupons, sales, new product releases, and other platform updates. These emails are intended to keep users informed about discounts and content relevant to their interests. The newsletter subscription is often enabled by default in certain contexts, such as during purchase confirmation. Users have reported receiving these promotional emails frequently—sometimes every other day—and have complained about their volume, as well as subject lines that can appear sensational or embarrassing in nature, prompting dissatisfaction among some recipients. To stop receiving these promotional emails, users can unsubscribe via their account settings. Log in to the DLsite account and access My Page (via the account menu in the upper right on PC or through the settings menu on mobile). From there, select "Email Settings" or "Notification Preferences." Uncheck the box for "Receive special offers" (or the equivalent newsletter subscription option). Changes may take a few days to take full effect.[37][35]

Phishing and Security Concerns

DLsite's official support resources highlight the importance of protecting against unauthorized access, noting an increasing number of viruses and phishing websites designed to steal personal data from users' PCs or mobile devices.[57] To mitigate these risks, the platform recommends installing and regularly updating security software on devices.[57] Users are encouraged to create strong passwords—at least 8 characters long, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols—while avoiding predictable patterns, common words, or personal information such as names or dates of birth. Passwords should be unique to DLsite and not reused across other services.[57] Enabling login notifications via email allows users to monitor for unusual activity and respond promptly to potential threats.[57] If suspicious login attempts or activity appear in account history, users should change their password immediately and contact their credit card company if unauthorized transactions are suspected. Registered credit card information can be deleted from the account as an additional precaution.[57] While DLsite implements measures to secure user accounts, personal vigilance remains essential in avoiding phishing attempts and other online security risks.

Content Description Policies

DLsite maintains policies requiring creators to adhere to specific guidelines for metadata, including titles, descriptions, tags, and other textual elements associated with works, to ensure compliance with payment processor rules and avoid restrictions on transaction processing. In March 2024, the platform issued requests to registered creators to modify certain keywords in their content descriptions that were deemed problematic under credit card company policies related to adult-oriented material.[24] Specific directives included replacing terms such as "loli" with the euphemism "hiyoko" (meaning "chick" in Japanese) and "rape" with "no consent," among other alterations intended to obscure direct references to potentially flagged categories. These changes were communicated privately to creators as a self-regulatory measure to sustain compatibility with major credit card providers like Visa and Mastercard, which had imposed stricter scrutiny on platforms hosting certain adult content.[24] The directives gained public attention after leaking to social media, highlighting the platform's attempt to navigate external compliance pressures through metadata adjustments. Despite these efforts, Visa and Mastercard payments were temporarily suspended in April 2024.[24] Subsequent refinements to the substituted terms occurred shortly afterward, such as shifts in related euphemisms, reflecting ongoing adjustments to metadata requirements amid evolving compliance demands.[58]
