The 2020 Sorcerous Stabber Orphen anime television series is based on the light novel series of the same name written by Yoshinobu Akita and illustrated by Yuuya Kusaka. The anime remake is animated by Studio Deen and directed by Takayuki Hamana, with Reiko Yoshida handling series composition, and Takahiko Yoshida designing the characters. Showtaro Morikubo reprised his role as Orphen, while the rest of the characters had new voice actors.[1] The 2020 remake was commemorated to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the anime series.[2] It was initially set to premiere in 2019,[3] but was rescheduled to premiere on January 7 to March 31, 2020, on AT-X, BS Fuji, Tokyo MX, and Wowow.[4] The opening theme is "Calling U" performed by buzz★Vibes, and the ending theme is "Unpredictable Days" (予測不能Days, "Yosoku Funō Deizu") performed by Mai Fuchigami.[5]

Funimation has licensed the series for a simuldub.[6][7]

An unaired OVA episode was bundled with the remake's second Blu-ray box set, which released on May 8, 2020.[8]

A second season of the 2020 remake was announced with the title of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Battle of Kimluck.[9] It aired from January 20 to March 31, 2021.[9][10] The opening theme is "Light of Justice" performed by Showtaro Morikubo while the ending theme is "Marionette Coup d'État" (操り人形(マリオネット)クーデター, "Marionetto Kū Detā") performed by Mai Fuchigami.[5]

A third season was announced on September 26, 2022, titled Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Chaos in Urbanrama. Kenji Konuta replaced Reiko Yoshida as the scriptwriter. It aired from January 18 to April 5, 2023.[11][12] The opening theme song is "Hysteric Caravan" by Showtaro Morikubo, while the ending theme song is "Fantastic Partner" (ファンタジック・パートナー, Fantajikku Pātonā) by Mai Fuchigami.[13]

A fourth season was announced on January 9, 2023, titled Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Sanctuary Arc. It aired from April 12 to June 28, 2023.[14] The opening theme is "Motive Rain" by Showtaro Morikubo while the ending theme is "Shūen no Destiny" (Destiny of the End) by Mai Fuchigami.[15]

The List of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (2020 TV series) episodes catalogs the installments of the anime television adaptation produced by Studio Deen, marking a remake of the 1998 series to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Yoshinobu Akita's light novel series.[1] The series follows the sorcerer Orphen in his quest to restore his foster sister Azalie, who was transformed into the dragon Bloody August, blending action, fantasy, and comedy across multiple arcs.[2] It comprises four seasons totaling 48 episodes plus an unaired OVA: Season 1 (Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi, 13 episodes) aired from January 7 to March 31, 2020, on AT-X and other networks; Season 2 (Battle of Kimluck, 11 episodes) from January 20 to March 31, 2021; Season 3 (Chaos in Urbanrama, 12 episodes) from January 18 to April 5, 2023; and Season 4 (Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary, 12 episodes) from April 6 to June 22, 2023.[3][4][5] Directed by Takayuki Hamana and written by Reiko Yoshida (Seasons 1 and 2) and Kenji Konuta (Season 3), the adaptation emphasizes Orphen's reluctant adventures with companions like Claiomh, Majic, and the dwarven duo Volkan and Dortin, while exploring themes of magic, betrayal, and redemption from the Continental Series novels.[1] The episode list details titles, original Japanese broadcast dates, and synopses, highlighting key plot developments such as Orphen's confrontations at the Tower of Fangs and battles in various realms.[6]

Background

Source material adaptation

The 2020 anime adaptation of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen draws directly from Yoshinobu Akita's light novel series Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi, selecting key arcs to structure its narrative across multiple seasons while aiming for greater fidelity to the source material compared to prior adaptations. Season 1 covers elements from light novel volumes 1, 4, 5, and 6, encompassing the initial "Hagure Tabi" (Wayward Journey) arc that follows the protagonist's travels and conflicts after leaving the Tower of Fang.[7] This selection skips volumes 2 and 3 to streamline the story, prioritizing core events over secondary subplots.[7] Season 2, subtitled Battle of Kimluck (Kimluck-hen), adapts volumes 7 through 10, delving into the titular conflict in the city of Kimluck and escalating the series' stakes with larger-scale confrontations.[8] Season 3, Chaos in Urbanrama (Urbanrama-hen), draws from volumes 11 to 15, exploring chaotic events in the urban setting of Urbanrama and introducing new alliances and threats.[9] Finally, Season 4, Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary (Seiiki-hen or Ryuu no Seiiki-hen), adapts volumes 16 through 20, culminating in battles within the Dragon Sanctuary and resolving long-running threads from the novels.[10] These mappings allow the anime to progress through the light novels' sequential arcs without exhaustive coverage of every volume, focusing on high-impact plot developments to maintain pacing across 13-episode seasons. An unaired OVA episode, titled Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi Side Story: Tenkuu no Sorcerous Stabber (Celestial Artifacts), was bundled with the second Blu-ray volume on May 8, 2020, and adapts a self-contained side story from the light novels that expands on ancillary events outside the main arc progression.[3] In contrast to the 1998 anime adaptation, which incorporated original filler episodes and altered certain plot sequences to extend runtime, the 2020 series employs modern animation techniques for enhanced visual dynamics—such as fluid spell effects and detailed environments—while sticking closely to the novels' events and character motivations, eliminating non-canon additions to preserve the source's tone and structure.[11][12] This approach, produced by Studio Deen, results in a more concise retelling that commemorates the light novels' 25th anniversary by prioritizing narrative authenticity over expansive world-building.[13]

Production development

The production of the Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (2020 TV series) was led by director Takayuki Hamana, who oversaw all four seasons to ensure a unified vision across the adaptation.[1] Series composition was handled by Reiko Yoshida, responsible for scripting and narrative structure, while character designs were adapted by Takahiko Yoshida, building on original designs by Yūya Kusaka.[1] Key animation contributions came from staff such as Hirofumi Morimoto, who worked on multiple episodes including chief animation direction roles in seasons 1 and beyond.[1] Development for the first season began following its announcement in March 2018 as a 25th-anniversary project, with production greenlit for a planned 2019 release that ultimately premiered on January 7, 2020, produced by Studio DEEN.[14] Subsequent seasons were announced post-airing of prior installments: season 2 (Battle of Kimluck) in early 2020 ahead of its January 2021 debut, season 3 (Chaos in Urbanrama) on September 25, 2022, for a January 2023 premiere, and season 4 (Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary) on January 9, 2023, airing from April 2023.[15][4][5] Each episode across the series standardized at approximately 24 minutes, allowing for consistent pacing aligned with the source material's arcs.[16] To maintain visual and narrative consistency throughout the run, the production emphasized returning core staff, including Hamana as director and Yoshida for composition, which facilitated seamless transitions between seasons despite shifts in supporting animation roles.[17] Episode counts varied by season to match arc pacing—13 episodes plus an OVA for season 1, 13 for season 2, and 12 each for seasons 3 and 4—addressing the need to cover specific novel volumes without unnecessary filler while adapting to production timelines.[1] This approach helped mitigate potential inconsistencies in style and storytelling, particularly as the series progressed through diverse settings and character developments.[18]

The series featured significant airing gaps between seasons, primarily attributed to the pacing of adapting the expansive light novel source material and standard production schedules for anime studios like Studio Deen. For instance, the interval between Season 1 and Season 2 was roughly ten months, while the gap to Season 3 extended to nearly two years to cover subsequent novel arcs.[4] Viewership trends in Japan, based on available data up to 2023, show the series maintaining modest audience engagement; however, detailed figures for later seasons remain limited in public records, and no updates for 2024–2025 exist due to the absence of new content. User ratings on platforms like MyAnimeList reflect similar reception, with Season 1 scoring around 5.8/10 from over 25,000 users, indicating steady but not exceptional popularity.[19]

Season 1 (2020)

Season 1 of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, titled Majutsushi Orphen: Hagure Tabi, adapts the "Hagure Tabi" arc from Yoshinobu Akita's light novel series, centering on the sorcerer Orphen's ongoing quest to restore his foster sister Azalie, who was transformed into the dragon Bloody August five years prior. Produced by Studio Deen under director Takayuki Hamana with series composition by Reiko Yoshida, the season explores Orphen's reluctant adventures after leaving the Tower of Fangs, involving encounters with monsters, assassins, and remnants of his past while he works off debts in the city of Totokanta. The 13-episode run aired weekly on networks including AT-X, Tokyo MX, BS Fuji, and WOWOW from January 7 to March 31, 2020, marking a remake celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original 1998 anime adaptation.[1][19] The season introduces key companions like Cleao Everlasting, a noblewoman who becomes entangled in Orphen's pursuits, and Majic Arisetta, a young apprentice sorcerer, as they navigate magical threats and Orphen's internal conflicts over his abandonment of the Tower. An original video animation (OVA), Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi: Tennin no Isan (translated as Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Celestial's Legacy), was bundled with the second Blu-ray volume and released on May 8, 2020, directed by Shunji Yoshida and written by Mariko Kunisawa; it depicts Orphen and his group arriving in the holy city of Kimluck, where they face an assault from the Heavenly Kin tribe, foreshadowing future conflicts.[23][24]

The episode escalates the chase, with Cleao's determination shining as she refuses to abandon Orphen's cause.[1][19]
Episode 8: "An Unexpected Assassin"
An assassin from Orphen's past ambushes the group, targeting the monster and forcing Orphen into a high-stakes duel that exposes fractures in his relationships with former Tower allies. Revelations about the assassin's motives tie back to Childman's coma and Azalie's forbidden experiments.[24][1]
Episode 9: "Ghost from the Past"
Haunted by spectral visions of Azalie and his old classmates, Orphen grapples with guilt while the group flees to safety, uncovering how the Sword of Baltanders' curse affects more than just his sister. Majic's loyalty is tested as he learns the dangers of pursuing forbidden magic.[19][1]
Episode 10: "Make My Past Disappear, Assassin"

Season 2: Battle of Kimluck (2021)

The second season of the 2020 Sorcerous Stabber Orphen anime, subtitled Battle of Kimluck, adapts the "Kimluck-hen" arc from volumes 7 to 10 of Yoshinobu Akita's light novel series, focusing on Orphen's journey to the holy city of Kimluck amid escalating conflicts with religious authorities and supernatural threats.[17] Airing from January 20 to March 31, 2021, on networks including AT-X, the season consists of 11 episodes, a shorter count than the first season's 13 due to compression of the arc's narrative to emphasize intense battles and theological intrigue.[20] Directed by Takayuki Hamana at Studio Deen, with series composition by Reiko Yoshida, it introduces key antagonists such as the Death Instructors, a group of enforcers tied to the city's anti-sorcery doctrine, heightening the stakes from Season 1's cliffhanger involving Azalie's motives.[17] The season explores themes of faith, betrayal, and forbidden magic, culminating in confrontations that challenge Orphen's resolve and alliances.[26] This arc shifts the story to Kimluck, a theocratic city that persecutes sorcerers, forcing Orphen, Majic, and Claiomh to navigate underground networks and moral dilemmas while uncovering secrets about ancient artifacts and divine entities.[27] New characters, including Sister Istersiva and members of the Heavenly Family, deepen the religious undertones, portraying the church's hierarchy as both oppressor and enigmatic power.[28] The production maintains the series' blend of action and character-driven drama, with episodes building toward large-scale battles that highlight Orphen's growth from a reluctant wanderer to a defiant force against institutional dogma.[20]

In the season premiere, "Say My Will, Demon King," Orphen, Majic, and Claiomh encounter an eerie theater not on their map during their approach to Kimluck, drawing them into a mysterious performance that hints at demonic influences.[29] "His Own Angel and Devil" delves into Orphen's psyche as the group witnesses a play about a "Demon King" in an underground venue, blurring lines between ally and foe. Tensions rise in "The City That Rejects Sorcerers," where Orphen and an ally named Azalie learn about the Death Instructors' role in enforcing Kimluck's ban on magic. "Sister Istersiva" introduces a pivotal church figure who becomes an unlikely ally, aiding Orphen's infiltration of the city's core while exposing internal divisions within the religious order. Conflict erupts in "Shed Bloody Tears, Holy City," as Orphen battles a formidable enemy in subterranean passages, symbolizing the bloodshed tied to Kimluck's sacred foundations. "We of Holy Death" follows Orphen and Majic's desperate search for escape routes, with Claiomh unconscious, underscoring the cult-like devotion of the city's death-worshipping faction. The narrative intensifies in "That Sorcery Will Kill Him," where uncontrolled magic threatens Orphen's life as he liberates Salua from imprisonment, highlighting the perils of sorcery in a magic-hostile environment. In "The Hall of the Great Poet," the protagonists clash with the antagonist Quo en route to the cathedral, weaving in lore from a legendary figure's sanctuary. "The Death Instructors" brings Azalie to the rescue of Claiomh, Majic, and Salua, while Quo grapples with a shattering revelation about the church's secrets. Penultimate episode "The Only Thing That Can Kill Her" features a heartfelt dialogue between Orphen and Azalie about their shared history, unveiling the true nature of the entity Ramonirok.[30] The finale, "Draw Your Bow at My God, Apostate," resolves the showdown with Quo in a climactic battle, leaving Orphen's triumph over the apostate forces ambiguous as religious dogma crumbles.
