Early life
Niklas Uwe Bernd Lomb was born on 28 July 1993 in Cologne, Germany.[5] Growing up in the Rhineland region, he maintained close ties with his family, who supported his early pursuits by picking him up after training sessions.[6] Lomb's introduction to football came at the age of six, when he joined SC West Köln as an outfield player.[6] Around the same time, a Christmas gift of a grey goalkeeper shirt from his godfather sparked his interest in the position; inspired, he asked his coach to let him try playing in goal.[6] This led to him eventually replacing the original goalkeeper and solidifying his role in the team's net.[6] Under the guidance of his initial coach, Ingo Schmitz—who was the father of the club's original goalkeeper—Lomb received foundational training that emphasized development and preparation for higher levels.[6] Schmitz served as a sporting mentor, helping to nurture Lomb's skills during his early years at SC West Köln.[6]Education and personal interests
Lomb attended grammar school in Köln-Ehrenfeld, where he balanced his studies with early football commitments, often traveling by train for training sessions after classes ended in the early afternoon.[6] He completed his A-levels (Abitur) at the age of 19 in 2012, marking the end of his secondary education.[6] In 2020, Lomb began studies in sports business management at a university in Düsseldorf, emphasizing the importance of pursuing intellectual development alongside his athletic career.[6] He has expressed interest in formal higher education, considering options like sports and fitness management had football not progressed as it did, though as of 2020, details on the status of his degree were not publicly disclosed.[6] Outside of football, Lomb maintains a low-profile personal life focused on relaxation and well-being, with golf serving as a key hobby for mental recharge and tranquility.[6] He is represented by agent Dirk Hebel of DH Sports Consulting, who handles his professional affairs while respecting his privacy regarding family matters.[1]Club career
Youth career
Niklas Lomb began his organized youth football journey with SC West Köln before trialing with Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the age of 13 in 2006.[6] Impressed by his potential, the club invited him to join their youth academy two years later, leading to his transfer from SC West Köln to Bayer Leverkusen's system in 2008 at age 15.[6][1] Upon arrival, Lomb initially served as the third-choice goalkeeper for the U17 team during the 2008–09 season, making just two appearances in the B-Junioren Bundesliga West.[7] He rose to prominence the following year, becoming the first-choice keeper for the 2009–10 campaign with 16 appearances, helping Bayer Leverkusen U17 secure qualification for the German Under-17 Championship.[7][6] The team advanced through the knockout stages, defeating VfB Stuttgart U17 in the semi-finals with aggregate scores of 2–1 in the first leg and 1–0 in the second, before reaching the final. In the final on June 26, 2010, away at Eintracht Frankfurt U17, Lomb started but his side lost 1–0 after extra time. From 2008 to 2012, Lomb honed his foundational goalkeeping skills across Bayer Leverkusen's youth ranks, transitioning from U17 to U19 levels in 2010.[1] This period culminated in his initial exposure to senior football with Bayer Leverkusen II in the Regionalliga West starting in the 2011–12 season, where he made his debut in 2012.[7]Bayer Leverkusen and loan spells
Lomb signed his first professional contract with Bayer Leverkusen on 1 July 2012, initially assigned the squad number 36.[1] He primarily featured for the club's reserve team, Bayer Leverkusen II, in the Regionalliga West from 2012 to 2014, making 62 appearances and conceding 77 goals while securing 20 clean sheets.[7] Lomb made his first-team debut for Bayer Leverkusen on 6 December 2012 in the UEFA Europa League group stage against Rosenborg BK, keeping a clean sheet in a 1–0 victory; this remained his only senior appearance for the club prior to his loan spells.[6] To gain further experience, Lomb was loaned to 3. Liga side Hallescher FC from 8 January to 30 June 2015, where he made 13 appearances and contributed to the team's 6–0 win over VfL Halle 1896 in the 2015 Saxony-Anhalt Cup final. The following season, he joined another 3. Liga club, Preußen Münster, on loan from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016, featuring in 37 matches and conceding 38 goals.[8] After two years back with Leverkusen, Lomb was loaned to 2. Bundesliga outfit SV Sandhausen for the 2018–19 campaign from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019, during which he recorded 12 appearances and 16 goals conceded.[9] Across these three loan spells, Lomb accumulated approximately 62 appearances in the German second and third tiers.[10]Return and current role at Bayer Leverkusen
Upon returning from his loan spells in the summer of 2019, Niklas Lomb rejoined Bayer 04 Leverkusen as the third-choice goalkeeper behind first-choice Lukas Hradecky and second-choice Ramazan Özcan.[6] This positioning reflected the competitive depth in Leverkusen's goalkeeping department, where Lomb focused on training and squad support rather than immediate first-team integration.[6] Lomb's opportunities in the Bundesliga remained limited during this period, with a total of two appearances recorded as of 2023, both occurring in the 2020–21 season.[10] No further Bundesliga outings were reported in the 2024–25 or ongoing 2025–26 seasons, underscoring his role as a reliable but seldom-used backup.[11] In European competitions, he made sporadic substitute appearances, including in the UEFA Europa League during the 2023–24 campaign, but these did not translate to regular starts.[10] To secure his long-term presence in the squad, Lomb signed multiple contract extensions, with the most recent on April 8, 2024, extending his deal until June 30, 2027.[1] This commitment highlighted the club's appreciation for his professionalism despite limited playing time.[12] In the 2024–25 season, Lomb served as a backup option in both the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League, maintaining his third-choice status amid stable squad dynamics.[13] His market value stood at €250,000 as of June 2025, reflecting a modest valuation for a experienced reserve goalkeeper.[1] As of November 2025, Lomb continues to remain with Bayer Leverkusen, with no reported transfers or departures.[1]Playing style
Goalkeeping attributes
Niklas Lomb possesses a physical profile well-suited to the demands of professional goalkeeping, standing at 1.88 m tall and weighing 83 kg, with a right-footed preference that aids in distribution and handling.[1][14] Lomb excels in shot-stopping, particularly in one-on-one situations, where his reflexes rating of 70 in EA Sports FC 26 highlights his quick reactions to close-range threats.[15] He demonstrates strong command of the penalty area through solid positioning (rated 63), enabling effective organization of the defense during set pieces and crosses.[15] Additionally, his distribution with the feet is suitable for modern possession-based systems, supported by a kicking attribute of 64 and strengths in long passing as identified in performance analytics.[15][16] Lomb has proven solid in lower divisions, accumulating 37 appearances for Preußen Münster in the 3. Liga (conceding 38 goals) and 12 for SV Sandhausen in the 2. Bundesliga, but his top-flight exposure remains limited to just 2 Bundesliga matches, where he conceded 3 goals without a clean sheet.[10][17] As a reliable backup at Bayer Leverkusen since 2012, he maintains a low error rate.[18] In media and video game representations, Lomb holds an overall rating of 66 in EA Sports FC 26, underscoring his journeyman status as a dependable third-choice option rather than a star performer.[14]Influences and development
Niklas Lomb's transition to goalkeeping began at age six while playing as an outfield player for SC West in Cologne, prompted by a Christmas gift of a grey goalkeeper shirt that sparked his interest in the position.[6] Encouraged by his youth coach Ingo Schmitz, who was the father of the team's original goalkeeper, Lomb requested a trial in goal and quickly outperformed the incumbent, securing the role permanently.[6] Schmitz provided crucial early mentorship, helping Lomb build foundational skills during this adaptation phase.[6] As a teenager, Lomb idolized Oliver Kahn for his commanding presence and leadership qualities, emulating the former Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper as a key identification figure in his formative years.[19][20] Later, Manuel Neuer emerged as a primary influence, particularly after the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where Neuer's innovative sweeper-keeper style elevated the position and inspired Lomb to incorporate proactive distribution and ball-playing elements into his game.[6][21] Lomb's professional development accelerated through loan spells that provided essential match experience and maturity. He gained consistency at Hallescher FC in the 2014–15 3. Liga season and at Preußen Münster in the 2015–16 season, where regular starts honed his shot-stopping and positional awareness under competitive pressure.[6] His 2018-2019 loan to SV Sandhausen in the 2. Bundesliga further refined his decision-making, exposing him to higher tactical demands and contributing to improved composure in high-stakes scenarios.[22][6] Over the long term, Lomb evolved from a promising youth prospect—having joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2008 and featured in the 2010 German U17 Championship final—to a dependable third-choice goalkeeper, valued for his patience, work ethic, and positive squad influence.[6] Successive contract extensions, including until 2027, underscore his growth into a reliable professional who supports the team's depth without seeking prominence.[23][12]Honours
Club achievements
Niklas Lomb's club achievements reflect his career primarily as a backup goalkeeper with limited starting opportunities in high-profile competitions. During a loan spell at Hallescher FC in the 2014–15 season, he was part of the team that won the Saxony-Anhalt Cup after making 13 appearances for the 3. Liga side. The team clinched the regional title with a 6–0 victory over VfL Halle 1896 in the final on 13 May 2015, qualifying Hallescher for the DFB-Pokal.[1] Lomb also contributed to Bayer Leverkusen's historic double in the 2023–24 season as part of the squad. The team won the Bundesliga title for the first time, going unbeaten across 34 matches, and secured the DFB-Pokal with a 1–0 final win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern.[24] Leverkusen reached the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League final but lost 3–0 to Atalanta, resulting in no European silverware.Youth achievements
At youth level with Bayer Leverkusen, Lomb was the goalkeeper for the U17 team that won the 2009–10 German U17 Bundesliga West and finished as runners-up in the German U17 Championship, losing 1–0 to Eintracht Frankfurt after extra time in the final. He also won the 2010–11 German U19 Bundesliga West with the U19 team.[25] Overall, Lomb has no individual accolades, underscoring his profile as a dependable squad player rather than a starring figure in title-winning campaigns.Career statistics
