Thandeka Mdeliswa (22 May 1986 – 5 September 2020) was a South African actress, best known for her starring role as Khanya in the SABC1 drama series Ikani.

Thandeka's first television role was in 2013, in an episode "Imbiza" of the series Ekasi: Our Stories. She also landed minor roles on local soapie Generations: The Legacy, Isidingo, Rhythm City, and the SABC1 short story series Ngempela.

She was shot on 3 September, in Evander, Mpumalanga. She was rushed to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria where she was in a critical condition. Mdeliswa died on 5 September morning.[4]

Shooting incident

On 3 September 2020, Thandeka Mdeliswa was shot at her family home in Evander, Mpumalanga. The incident began when two men arrived to confront her brother over money that he had allegedly taken, in connection with a cellular phone. An argument ensued, prompting Mdeliswa to intervene in an attempt to settle the dispute. Siyabonga Mbatha then took a firearm from one of the men, shot Mdeliswa in the neck, and fled the scene. She was rushed to Evander Hospital immediately after the shooting, where she was stabilized before being airlifted to Witbank and then transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria for further treatment. Mdeliswa died two days later on 5 September 2020 at the age of 34 due to the gunshot wounds.

Murder trial and sentencing

Following the shooting incident in Evander, Siyabonga Mbatha was arrested and charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Mbatha pleaded guilty to these charges in the Mpumalanga High Court. On 12 August 2021, the court sentenced him to 25 years' imprisonment for murder, 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm, and three years for unlawful possession of ammunition, with the sentences on the firearm and ammunition charges ordered to run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective term of 25 years. Mbatha was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Charges against two co-accused, who were arrested alongside Mbatha shortly after the incident, were withdrawn as they could not be linked to the crime.
