Inspiration and songwriting
"The Painter" serves as a heartfelt tribute to Cody Johnson's wife, Brandi, whom he describes as having transformed his previously monochromatic existence into a vibrant masterpiece by infusing color and possibility into his life, particularly through the metaphor of turning protective "walls" into opportunities for creation like a canvas.[9] Johnson has emphasized that the song captures the profound impact Brandi has had on him over their 15 years together, crediting her with revealing beauty and potential he had not previously envisioned.[10] The song was collaboratively written in 2023 by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, and Ryan Larkins during a Nashville songwriting session. The core inspiration stemmed from Larkins' personal anecdote about his wife, an actual painter who brings creativity and vividness to his world, prompting the title "The Painter" and the central metaphor of a loved one artistically reshaping one's life.[7] Higgins contributed by drawing from her friendship with painter Margaret Ruttan, who similarly encouraged artistic expression, while Davis helped weave in broader themes of positive transformation; the trio worked at a round table, exchanging lines to build a collective narrative grounded in their authentic experiences.[7] To maintain emotional authenticity, they prioritized natural storytelling in the verses, deliberately avoiding contrived or forced rhymes to ensure the lyrics flowed organically.[7] Upon receiving the demo, Johnson was immediately emotionally struck, feeling it resonated deeply with his own relationship and rejecting any notion of it being overly "artsy" in favor of its straightforward portrayal as a genuine love song.[11] He singled out the lyric "For every wall I built, she saw a canvas" as his favorite, noting it perfectly encapsulated the dynamic of his marriage to Brandi, and swiftly chose "The Painter" as the lead single for his album Leather.[10] Johnson first announced the single in July 2023 and shared teasers on Instagram, including a black-and-white-to-color video of him dancing with Brandi to build anticipation for its August release.[12][13]Recording and production
"The Painter" was recorded in 2023 at Starstruck Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, with longtime collaborator Trent Willmon serving as producer.[11] The sessions emphasized Cody Johnson's vocal performance, aiming to deliver the emotional tenderness central to the song's tribute.[11] The arrangement centered on acoustic guitar, provided by Tim Galloway, complemented by bass from Mike Brignardello, drums by Jerry Roe, and subtle fiddle and strings arranged by Jenee Fleenor, creating a minimalist country ballad sound that avoided overproduction.[14][15] Backing vocals from Bobby Hamrick and Kat Higgins added depth without overshadowing the intimacy.[14] The final track runs for 3:31, balancing sparse instrumentation with Johnson's personalized input to ensure the recording reflected the song's heartfelt essence.[16] Warner Nashville, in partnership with CoJo Music, oversaw the production as the lead single for Johnson's album Leather, prioritizing a clean, evocative mix that highlighted the track's emotional core.Release and promotion
Single release
"The Painter" was released on August 11, 2023, as the lead single from Cody Johnson's third major-label studio album, Leather, which came out on November 3, 2023.[10][17] The track was distributed by Warner Music Nashville in multiple formats, including digital download, streaming platforms, and radio airplay.[18][11] As a follow-up to Johnson's previous No. 1 hit "'Til You Can't" from his 2021 album Human: The Double Album, "The Painter" represented a shift toward more personal balladry, drawing on intimate themes inspired by his relationship with his wife.[10][9] This release built on the momentum of his earlier successes while introducing a more reflective tone to his discography.[1] Warner Music Nashville initiated radio promotion by sending the single to country stations, where it quickly gained traction as the most-added track upon debut, fostering rapid airplay accumulation across the format.[19][11]Marketing efforts
Cody Johnson generated early buzz for "The Painter" through targeted pre-release announcements and teasers. In July 2023, he revealed details about the single during an interview with iHeartRadio host Spencer Graves, confirming its impending impact on country radio and tying it to his forthcoming album Leather.[12] Johnson further amplified interest via Instagram posts, including a July 25 announcement of the August 14 radio date and an August teaser video featuring him dancing with his wife Brandi, which shifted from monochrome to vivid colors to evoke the song's transformative love theme.[20][21] Johnson connected personally with audiences during radio promotions and interviews leading up to and following the August 11 digital release, sharing the track's backstory as a tribute to Brandi and how her perspective reshaped his life, such as seeing "canvases" where he built "walls."[9][22] These efforts, including the song's strong radio add date as the most-added track upon impact, helped foster emotional engagement with fans.[19] Promotion integrated with Leather's rollout, including digital strategies such as the song's feature on Spotify's New Music Friday Country playlist and ongoing social media content spotlighting the wife tribute narrative, encouraging shares and streams among country listeners.[23][10]Composition and lyrics
"The Painter" is a country ballad composed in the key of D major with a mid-tempo arrangement at approximately 98 beats per minute.[24] It features Johnson's baritone vocals supported by acoustic guitar, gentle pedal steel, and subtle production that emphasizes emotional delivery over elaborate instrumentation.[1] The song follows a conventional verse-chorus structure, building to a swelling chorus that highlights its romantic narrative.[25] Lyrically, the track uses painting as a metaphor for the transformative power of love, portraying Johnson's wife, Brandi, as an artist who turns life's hardships into beauty. Lines like "For every wall I built, she saw a canvas / And every line I fought, she drew a heart in" illustrate themes of renewal, gratitude, and partnership drawn from their long-term marriage.[1] The songwriters—Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, and Ryan Larkins—drew from personal inspirations of supportive figures in their lives, creating a universal tribute to positive influence.[7]Music video
The official music video for "The Painter" premiered on January 19, 2024.[26] Directed by Dustin Haney, it was filmed in black and white on Cody Johnson's Texas ranch prior to the holidays.[27] The five-minute video narrates the story of Johnson meeting and building a life with his wife, Brandi, portraying her as the metaphorical "painter" who adds color and support to his dreams and challenges. Early scenes of their relationship appear in color, with Brandi making a cameo at the end as the visuals transition to full color.[28]Commercial performance
