Childerditch

Childerditch is a settlement in the Brentwood district, in the county of Essex, England. It forms part of the Warley borough council ward.

History

At the time of the Domesday survey in 1086, the settlement was home to 25 households.[1]

The opening of the East Horndon station on the London Tilbury and Southend Railway on the eastern boundary in 1886 stimulated the building of factories in Childerditch.[2]

Childerditch is a former civil parish and had a population of 184 in 1931.[3] On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished and merged with Brentwood, part also went to Little Burstead.[4]

Childerditch church is a landmark on a hilltop to the north of the A127 road. The church is dedicated to All Saints and St Faith. It was constructed in 1869, to the designs of D. C. Nicholls and Fred Johnstone.[5]
