Key Information

Christel Martina Roosberg (née Sundberg; born 3 January 1982),[1] known by her stage name Chisu (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈkisu]), is a Finnish pop artist, songwriter, and producer.

She wrote her first single, "Mun koti ei oo täällä", to the soundtrack of the 2007 film Sooloilua. The song was a hit in Finland in early 2008, peaking at number one on both the Singles Chart and the Downloads Chart and spending seven and nine weeks atop, respectively. She released her second album Vapaa ja yksin in 2009.

Her third album, Kun valaistun, was released in 2011 through Warner Music Finland. It was met with significant commercial success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time in Finland by a Finnish artist, selling approximately 95,000 copies.[2] The album went on to win Best Album and Best Pop Album at the 2012 Emma-gaala, Finland’s most prestigious music awards ceremony. Another version of the album, Kun valaistun 2.0, was released in 2012.

Her fourth album, Polaris, was released in 2015. Her fifth album, MOMENTUM 123, was released in 2019. In 2022, she announced an indefinite hiatus from music.

Chisu, who was born in Helsinki, has written songs for Antti Tuisku, Tarja Turunen, Jippu, Kristiina Brask and Kristiina Wheeler.[citation needed] During her career, Chisu has sold over 230,000 certified records, which places her among the top 80 best-selling artists in Finland.[3]

In November 2012, Chisu was connected to a copyright controversy in Finland when a nine-year-old girl's home was raided by the police and had her laptop confiscated due to allegedly downloading Chisu songs.[4][5] The controversy was named as Chisugate by media.[6] It has been alleged that the files the little girl downloaded and later shared, were bogus files disguised as the Chisu album and therefore she did not share Chisu's music.

In May 2025, Chisu's composition Ich Komme performed by Erika Vikman represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, where it finished 11th in the grand final with 196 points.[7]

Personal life

[edit]

Chisu married producer Jori Sjöroos on 28 September 2019.[8] After the marriage, Chisu changed her last name to Roosberg, combining her husband's last name Sjöroos and her last name Sundberg.[9]

Chisu, the stage name of Christel Martina Roosberg (née Sundberg; born 3 January 1982), is a Finnish pop singer, songwriter, and record producer who achieved widespread popularity in Finland through her solo career spanning the late 2000s to 2022.[1] Roosberg rose to prominence with her album Vapaa ja yksin (2009), followed by major successes including the platinum-certified Kun valaistun (2011) and Polaris (2015), which featured hit singles such as "Baden Baden," "Sabotage," "Kolmas pyörä," and "Sama nainen" that amassed millions of streams.[1] She won multiple Emma Awards during her career, establishing her as one of Finland's most prominent pop artists.[2] Her work also included appearances on the television series Vain elämää and performances at high-profile events such as the President's Independence Day Reception.[1] In November 2021, Roosberg announced that she would place her solo career as Chisu on indefinite hold at the end of 2022—described as "deep freezing" the artist persona—citing exhaustion with the demands of public visibility, social media pressures, and a sense that the Chisu concept had begun to fracture and no longer aligned with her creative direction.[2] [1] She completed a farewell tour in 2023 but has since withdrawn from performing and large-scale publicity under the Chisu name.[3] Since stepping back, Roosberg has continued her involvement in music through collaborative production and songwriting with her husband Jori Roosberg under the duo ROOS+BERG, creating material for other artists including Erika Vikman.[3] She has also taken on a role as a panelist on the television program Levyraati starting in 2025, while prioritizing family life in Porvoo with her blended family of three school-aged children.[2] [3] She has stated there are no plans to revive her solo performing career as Chisu.[2]

Early life and personal life

Early life

Christel Martina Sundberg was born on 3 January 1982 in Helsinki, Finland.[4][5] She later adopted the professional stage name Chisu.[5] Sundberg entered the music industry as a songwriter and performer by composing and recording "Mun koti ei oo täällä" for the soundtrack of the 2007 Finnish film Sooloilua. The track, which served as her debut single, marked her initial public appearance in music.[5][6][7]

Personal life

Chisu, born Christel Martina Sundberg, married music producer Jori Sjöroos on 28 September 2019 in a private ceremony.[8] Following the marriage, the couple created and adopted the new surname Roosberg by combining elements of their previous surnames, Sjöroos and Sundberg.[9][10] Both partners have since used Roosberg, and she is publicly identified as Christel Roosberg in personal contexts.[3] Chisu has maintained a low-profile personal life since the marriage, sharing occasional insights into her family-oriented daily routine while prioritizing privacy.[3]

Career

2007–2008: Debut and Alkovi

Chisu debuted professionally in late 2007 with the single "Mun koti ei oo täällä", written for the soundtrack of the Finnish film Sooloilua. The track gained significant popularity in early 2008, entering the Finnish Singles Chart in February, peaking at number one, and spending 23 weeks on the chart.[11] It received gold certification from Musiikkituottajat in 2008 for 7,733 sales.[12] On 27 February 2008, Chisu released her debut studio album Alkovi through Helsinki Music Company (HMC). The album entered the Finnish Albums Chart and peaked at number 5, charting for 14 weeks.[13][11] It was certified gold by Musiikkituottajat in 2010 with 28,773 sales.[12] These early achievements established Chisu as an emerging talent in the Finnish pop scene, highlighting her ability to blend personal songwriting with commercial appeal from the outset of her career.

2009–2012: Breakthrough and Kun valaistun era

In 2009, Chisu achieved a mainstream breakthrough with her second studio album Vapaa ja yksin, released by Warner Music Finland on September 23, 2009. The album peaked at number one on the Finnish Albums Chart and earned double platinum certification from Musiikkituottajat – IFPI Finland for sales exceeding 40,000 copies.[14][15] Her third album Kun valaistun, released on October 5, 2011, marked her commercial peak. It debuted at number one on the Finnish Albums Chart and sold approximately 94,970 copies in Finland, earning 4× platinum certification from Musiikkituottajat – IFPI Finland. The album ranked among the best-selling Finnish-language releases of its time.[16][17][18] A re-release titled Kun valaistun 2.0 followed in June 2012, adding new tracks and peaking at number two on the Finnish Albums Chart.[19][20] At the 2012 Emma-gaala, Finland's leading music awards ceremony, Kun valaistun won Best Album and Best Pop Album.[21] In November 2012, Chisu became linked to the "Chisugate" copyright controversy after a police raid on the home of a nine-year-old girl, who had illegally downloaded and shared Chisu's music via file-sharing networks. The girl's laptop was confiscated following her father's refusal to pay a fine from the Copyright Information and Anti-Piracy Centre; the fine was later reduced following public outcry over the enforcement tactics. The incident fueled debate on copyright laws in Finland, and Chisu publicly expressed regret over the child's involvement.[22][23]

2015–2019: Polaris, MOMENTUM 123, and later work

In 2015, Chisu released her fourth studio album, Polaris, on October 2 through Warner Music Finland. The album debuted at number 2 on the Finnish Albums Chart, holding the peak position for one week and spending a total of 30 weeks on the chart.[24] After Polaris, Chisu did not release another full-length album for several years, focusing instead on other activities including appearances on the television series Vain elämää.[25] In 2019, she returned with her fifth studio album, MOMENTUM 123, issued in three separate parts to suit modern streaming consumption: Momentum 1 on March 22, Momentum 2 on April 26, and Momentum 3 on May 24. This unconventional rollout presented the material as three distinct "moments" or mini-EPs, each with its own thematic identity—ranging from contemplative and hopeful (Momentum 1, with sea motifs) to playful and experimental (Momentum 2, with desert themes) and coolly serene (Momentum 3, with iceberg imagery). The album marked a pronounced artistic evolution, shifting toward electronic production built primarily from beats and sounds rather than traditional melody-first or acoustic approaches seen in her earlier work, while echoing some atmospheric elements from her 2008 debut Alkovi. MOMENTUM 123 reached number 22 on the Finnish Albums Chart, where it charted for two weeks.[26][25]

2022–present: Hiatus and other activities

In March 2022, Christel Roosberg announced in an interview with Ilta-Sanomat that she would conclude her solo performing career as Chisu at the end of the year, describing the decision as a "deep freeze" (syväjäädyttäminen) of her artist persona rather than a permanent end.[1] She explained that the demands of maintaining the public-facing Chisu image—including constant social media presence and the toll on her family life—had become exhausting, and she preferred studio work over live performances.[1] Roosberg emphasized fairness to her audience in communicating the change directly, noting that she had outgrown the style associated with past hits and no longer wished to continue producing music in that vein under the Chisu name.[1] She completed her farewell with a club tour and festival appearances throughout 2022.[1] Since the end of 2022, Roosberg has remained on indefinite hiatus from solo performances and releases as Chisu. She relocated to Porvoo with her husband, musician and producer Jori Roosberg, where they live with their blended family of three school-aged children.[3] In a 2025 interview, she stated that she does not miss the stage, views the decision as the right one, and prioritizes family time and a balanced life over public appearances.[3] Roosberg continues her involvement in music through the production and songwriting duo ROOS+BERG, formed with her husband. The pair has focused on collaborative projects, including writing and producing songs for other artists. Notably, they co-wrote and produced "Ich komme" for Erika Vikman, which was selected as Finland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 via UMK, finishing in 11th place in the grand final with 196 points.[27] They also released a club remix of the track under the ROOS+BERG name. In early 2025, Roosberg returned to television as a regular panelist on the music program Levyraati.[3]

Musical style

Genre and influences

Chisu's music is primarily rooted in pop, characterized by catchy melodies and accessible structures, but often incorporates experimental and electronic elements, including sound design, electro, and unconventional production techniques. In her later work, particularly the Momentum trilogy, she has described her sound as "poppia erikoisin soundein, äänisuunnittelua ja sekaan elektroa" (pop with special sounds, sound design, and electronic elements mixed in), noting that it can be "välillä kaunista, välillä pelottavaa ja sitten tuleekin taas jokin yllätysmomentti" (sometimes beautiful, sometimes scary, and then there’s a surprise moment).[28] Her style has evolved significantly over her career. Early albums such as Alkovi (2007) and Vapaa ja yksin (2009) featured a more organic singer-songwriter approach with guitars and iskelmällinen (Finnish schlager-influenced pop) elements, bringing "fresh breeze to the pop genre in Finland" through attitude, originality, and broad vocal registers capable of shifting from sad atmospheres to dancefloor energy.[29] By the late 2010s, she deliberately moved toward more mechanical and experimental territory, stating that she "oli pakko tappaa vanha Chisu" (had to kill the old Chisu) to update her sound and pursue what truly inspired her, resulting in less conventional singer-songwriter material and greater emphasis on beats, electronics, and altered vocal treatments such as vocoders.[28][30] Chisu has drawn influences from the dance and electronic music of her youth in the 1990s and early 2000s, including artists such as Leila K (whom she has channeled in tracks like Ikävä), Darude, Bomfunk MC’s, Waldo’s People, and Rammstein. These have shaped her production approach, particularly in evoking nostalgic 90s house-party vibes. She has also expressed admiration for contemporary figures like Drake and interest in rap, as well as broader electronic genres ranging from techno to trance.[31][28]

Songwriting and production

Chisu is a Finnish songwriter and producer who writes and produces much of her own material across her discography.[32][33] In addition to her self-contained creative approach, she has contributed songwriting to other Finnish artists, including Antti Tuisku, Tarja Turunen, Jippu, Kristiina Brask, and Kristiina Wheeler.[32][33] Following her 2022 hiatus from performing, Chisu has continued occasional songwriting projects, including co-writing and co-producing the song "Ich komme" with Jori Roosberg (as Roos+Berg) for Erika Vikman, which represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.[27][34]
