Jonathan Reid is a fictional British physician and surgeon known for being the protagonist of the 2018 action role-playing video game Vampyr, developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Focus Home Interactive.[1][2] A respected man of science and former World War I veteran, he returns to London only to be turned into a vampire against his will, forcing him into a profound moral conflict between his Hippocratic Oath to heal and his overpowering thirst for human blood amid the deadly Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.[1][2] His internal struggle as a rational scientist confronting supernatural reality defines the game's narrative, with player choices determining how he embraces or resists his monstrous nature, affecting his abilities, relationships, and the fate of the city.[2] The character is portrayed as a reluctant hero whose modern worldview clashes with the mysticism of vampirism and the grim atmosphere of a plague-ravaged London divided by class and social tensions.[2] His journey explores themes of morality, temptation, and transformation as he investigates the origins of the epidemic and the existence of other vampires, while deciding the fates of the city's inhabitants through feeding or restraint.[1][2] Reid's story has been noted for its emphasis on choice and consequence in a narrative-driven RPG, blending historical realism with gothic horror elements to create a compelling personal drama within a broader supernatural conspiracy.[2]
