Kochi Rajavu (transl. King of Kochi) is a 2005 Indian Malayalam-language action comedy film directed by Johny Antony and written by the Udayakrishna-Siby K. Thomas duo.[5][6][7] It stars Dileep[8] in the lead role with Kavya Madhavan,[9] Rambha, Harisree Ashokan, Murali, Jagathy Sreekumar and Vijayaraghavan in supporting roles.
The film marks the second collaboration between Dileep, Johny Antony, and the writing duo Udaykrishna–Sibi K. Thomas after C.I.D. Moosa (2003).[10]
Suryanarayana Varma, known as Unni, is released from prison, burdened by his royal lineage and haunted by his past. Though he longs for redemption, vengeance stalks him — led by Prabhakaran, the ruthless head of the Karimparakal family, and his brothers. Hoping to sever his ties with violence, Unni’s parents send him to a law college in Chennai.
There, he meets Meenakshi, a bold and independent young woman. Their clashes, fueled by her protective brother Siva and rival Muthu, soon give way to an unspoken bond. When her family proposes marriage, it seems Unni’s life may finally change. Yet before he can embrace a new beginning, he reveals the shadow of an old, unfinished love.
Years earlier, Unni had fallen for Aswathy, a compassionate medical student from the very Karimparakal family that despised him. Orphaned and controlled by her uncles, she was to be married to her cousin Prakashan. A chance meeting at a temple, and later an autorickshaw ride, drew her into Unni’s orbit. Though she rejected him, even betraying him to her uncles, his resilience after their brutal assault moved her heart. Against all odds, she reciprocated his love.
Their union provoked fury. In a violent clash with Prakashan, Unni struck a fatal blow and was sentenced to five years in prison, tearing him from Aswathy. His father convinced him she had married an NRI, forcing him to bury his love.
But as Unni prepared to wed Meenakshi, a call shattered his resolve — Aswathy had never moved on, she had waited. Racing back to Kerala, Unni reunited with her, and together they fled. Pursued by both her vengeful family and Meenakshi’s kin, they found unlikely protectors in autorickshaw drivers who had once witnessed their love.
In defiance of blood feuds and betrayal, Unni and Aswathy sealed their love in marriage — a bond forged in fire, loss, and unyielding devotion.[11]
The film was released on 14 April 2005 coinciding with Vishu.[12][13] It was released alongside and faced competition from the Prithviraj-starrer Athbhutha Dweepu, the Mohanlal-starrer Chandrolsavam and the Jayaram-starrer Alice in Wonderland.[14] Made on a budget of ₹2.5 crores, Kochi Rajavu was a commercial success.[15][16][17] It grossed ₹2.804 crore from three days and ₹4.01 crore in 21 days from 44 screens with a distributor's share of ₹1.73 Crore.[18] It ended its commercial performance with the verdict blockbuster" and thus emerged the year's Vishu winner.[18]
