T. M. Sadler's Wells was by Northern Dancer (CAN, bay, foaled 1961), while Colorspin was by High Top (GB) out of Reprocolor (GB).^[3][5] His dam was Once Wed (USA), an unraced chestnut mare foaled in 1984, who was by Blushing Groom (FR, chestnut, foaled 1974) out of Noura (USA, dark bay or brown, foaled 1978). Early life

T. M. Opera O was foaled on March 13, 1996, at Kineusu Bokujo in Hokkaido, Japan.^[2][3] He was bred by Kineusu Bokujo as a chestnut colt sired by Opera House and out of the unraced American mare Once Wed.^[2] As a yearling, he was sold for ¥10.5 million at the 1997 Hokkaido October Sale to businessman Masatsugu Takezono, whose initials formed the "T.M." prefix in the horse's name.^[2][3] Takezono then entrusted him to trainer Ichizo Iwamoto, who prepared the colt at the Ritto Training Center for his eventual racing debut.^[2] No notable injuries or unusual developments were reported during his early preparation prior to entering training.

Racing career

1998–1999 seasons

T. M. Opera O made a limited start to his racing career as a two-year-old in 1998, running only once. He debuted on August 15 at Kyoto Racecourse in an ungraded newcomer race over 1600 meters on turf, finishing second as the 1.5 favorite with jockey Ryuji Wada aboard.^[6] As a three-year-old in 1999, he competed more actively with 10 starts and 4 wins. Early in the year, he finished fourth in a maiden race on January 16 at Kyoto over 1400 meters on dirt. Notable progeny

T. M. Opera O's progeny achieved their most notable successes in jump racing rather than on the flat. T. M. Toppazure (foaled 2003, out of T. M. Charmant) won the Tokyo High-Jump (J.G2) in 2009 and amassed JRA earnings of ¥260.82 million, making him one of his sire's leading money earners.^[20][21] Another jumper, T. M. Death

Circumstances of death

T. M. Opera O died of a heart attack on May 17, 2018, at the age of 22. The incident occurred suddenly at Hakuba Bokujo Farm in Niikappu-cho, Hokkaido, Japan, while the horse was grazing in pasture.^[23][1] Owner Masatsugu Takezono described the death as instantaneous and without suffering, noting that the horse had appeared energetic during his last visit in autumn and had recently covered two mares that year. "It's very sad," Takezono told the Racing Post. "I'll never forget his unbelievable success in 2000."^[23] According to farm president Kazuya Nagahama, the heart failure struck around 2:20 p.m., prompting plans to establish a flower stand for fans wishing to pay respects.^[24]

Posthumous studies

T. M. Opera O died of a heart attack on May 17, 2018. Although no detailed postmortem autopsy results on his heart have been publicly reported, antemortem physiological studies—often referenced retrospectively in analyses of elite Thoroughbred cardiovascular traits—documented his exceptional heart characteristics. A 2003 study measured his left ventricular mass at 4.60 kg using echocardiography, substantially larger than averages reported for other Thoroughbreds (3.37 ± 0.34 kg in well-trained 2-year-olds and 3.366 ± 0.822 kg in another reference group). ^[25] This large left ventricular mass was accompanied by a resting heart rate of 25 beats per minute, considerably lower than the 30.3 ± 1.2 beats per minute average recorded in 15 other racehorses. ^[25] The researchers concluded that his enlarged heart likely enhanced parasympathetic nervous activity (evidenced by high high-frequency power in heart rate variability analysis at 5,963 ms² versus 1,248 ± 321 ms² in comparators), which contributed to the reduced resting heart rate. ^[25] These traits were deemed significant for understanding the physical attributes underpinning his elite performance. His heart size has been compared to those of legendary racehorses such as Secretariat and Eclipse, whose unusually large hearts (noted postmortem in their cases) were similarly credited for superior racing ability.
