Early life

Birth and background

Tom Erik Mathisen was born on August 14, 1952, in Oslo, Norway.[1][3] He holds Norwegian nationality and citizenship.[1] As of 2025, he is 73 years old.[1] No further verified details about his family or early personal background prior to his professional activities are available from reliable sources.

Early musical activities

Tom Mathisen first became known as a bassist in the Norwegian vise group Snu, a folk-rock ensemble active from approximately 1972 to 1981. [4] He contributed vocals, bass, guitar, mandolin, flute, and harmonica to the group, which was known for its politically oriented material. [5] Snu released the album Grov handel in 1973 on Polydor [6] along with several singles between 1972 and 1977, including "Byfolkevise / Fuglen Svein" in 1974. [7] An additional release, the compilation The Pest of «Snu», appeared in 1981. [5] This marked his primary professional engagement prior to transitioning to other projects in 1976. [4]

Music career

Snu

Tom Mathisen gained early recognition as the bassist in the Norwegian visegruppe Snu, where he also contributed vocals and songwriting.[4][8] The band, an acronym for Snill norsk ungdom ("Kind Norwegian Youth"), was formed in 1970 by Erling Bonde, Tom Mathisen, and Jan Rodahl, and specialized in humorous, satirical folk and rock performances often addressing political and social themes.[9] Snu's output included the live album Grov handel (1973), recorded at Chateau Neuf in Oslo in December 1972, along with various singles released between 1972 and 1977.[9][6] The group released the retrospective compilation The Pest of «Snu» in 1981, and performed their last concert in 1977, marking the end of their active period.[9] This experience with Snu served as a precursor to Mathisen's subsequent work with Prima Vera.[9]

Prima Vera

Prima Vera was a Norwegian comedy music group active from 1976 to 1984, consisting of Tom Mathisen, Herodes Falsk, and Jahn Teigen. [10] [11] The trio specialized in humorous songs, frequently parodying well-known international hits with unrelated, satirical, or sarcastic Norwegian lyrics. [10] Tom Mathisen performed on bass, guitar, and vocals while also serving as a songwriter and participant in the group's satirical revues. [12] [13] The group released several studio albums: Prima Vera (1977), Brakara (1978), Salmer og sanger vi gjerne hiver (1979), Fisle Narrepanne i Tyrol (1981), Ha ha he he ho! (De gærne har'e godt) (1982), and Her kommer Olavs menn (1983). [14] [15] In 1983, Prima Vera produced the feature film Prima Veras saga om Olav den hellige. [16] Subsequent compilations include Absolute Prima Vera (1994) and Det beste fra Prima Vera (2016). In 2022, the group released the single "The Excuse Is the Booze." [17] This collaboration established the basis for Mathisen's later long-term work with Herodes Falsk following the group's dissolution in 1984. [10]

Long-term collaboration with Herodes Falsk

Tom Mathisen and Herodes Falsk began their long-term collaboration in 1985, frequently appearing as the fictional characters Viggo and Reidar in their comedy music work. [18] Their breakthrough release was the album Viggo & Reidar synger julen inn – en jul i containeren, issued that year and later re-released in 1992 and 1999. [18] The duo followed with a series of albums, including Fusk (1986), Hubaluba (1987), Showbiz (1988), Fylla har skylda (1990), Alle fine damer har ei stygg venninne (1991), Chilikick! (1997), and the 2007 compilation De beste. [19] These releases featured satirical songs and parody elements, solidifying their reputation in Norwegian comedy music. [19] Mathisen and Falsk undertook extensive touring and live comedy shows as Viggo and Reidar throughout the 2000s and 2020s, maintaining their partnership with performances across Norway. [20] They have continued to release occasional singles in recent years, including material in 2021 and 2022. [21] Their collaboration remains active, with joint appearances scheduled into 2025. [20]

Jazz and other musical projects

Tom Mathisen has pursued interests in jazz and other musical genres alongside his prominent comedy collaborations. He is regarded as a highly skilled guitarist and songwriter with a particular affinity for jazz, frequently performing smooth background music or classic tunes when called upon for such settings.[22] A notable example of his jazz-related work is his contribution as guitarist to Mulens Portland Combo's 1995 album Tired of the Blues, where he performed on the hidden bonus track "Tom's Bonus Blues," an instrumental piece recorded live.[23] Throughout his career, Mathisen has accumulated credits on 40 albums as a musician, singer, or writer, reflecting extensive participation across various projects beyond his main comedy ensembles.[24][2] He has also made guest appearances on records by other Norwegian artists including Jahn Teigen, Jonas Fjeld, Lars Mjøen, and Knut Lystad, among others.[25]

Comedy career

Television series and specials

Tom Mathisen has played a prominent role in Norwegian television comedy, primarily as a writer and performer in a series of sketch-based shows, many created in collaboration with Herodes Falsk. Among his notable 1990s works are Sen Lunsj on TVNorge in 1992, Nådeløs Kveldskos on TVNorge in 1995, Høy Puls on TVNorge in 1997, and Piker, Vin og Sang on TV3 in 1998, all credited to the Falsk/Mathisen duo. These productions featured the pair's signature blend of satire, sketches, and music, establishing them as a staple of Norwegian light entertainment during that period. Mathisen has also been a frequent participant in NRK's children's comedy programming, contributing to the channel's family-oriented humor output beyond his better-known adult-oriented series.

Radio work

Tom Mathisen was a frequent participant in the long-running Norwegian radio comedy program Bedre sent enn alvor, created by Knut Lystad and Lars Mjøen, through the 1970s and 1980s. [26] He often appeared in sketches together with Lystad and Mjøen, in addition to other guests such as Jan H. Jensen and Trond Kirkvaag, contributing to the program's absurd and satirical humor. [27] Mathisen also collaborated with Øyvind Blunck in the radio characters Bæggen & Gassman, where they performed comic segments and near-radio-style sketches. [28] This collaboration resulted in releases such as Postens Sommerkassett in 1992, where the duo provided the main content with support from other comedians. [29] His radio comedy often shared the same absurd and musical style that characterized much of his other humor work.

Stage performances and tours

Tom Mathisen has maintained a prominent presence in Norwegian live stage entertainment through satirical revues and comedy tours, beginning with his work in Prima Vera during the late 1970s and 1980s. [30] The group undertook extensive live performances blending music parodies and sketches, appearing at theaters such as Centralteatret in Oslo for productions like Fantomets glade bryllup (1978) and Fisle Narrepanne i Tyrol (1981), with several shows documented in video releases including Uten en rød tråd (1981) and De gærne har'e godt (1982). [31] These revues established a foundation for his live work, often tied to album promotions but centered on theatrical presentations across Norway until the group's disbandment in 1983. [32] Following Prima Vera, Mathisen embarked on an extensive touring partnership with Herodes Falsk that spanned the 1980s to the 2020s, featuring comedy revues and music-based shows performed at venues across Norway. [19] Their joint stage work included the revue Fusk in 1986 and other productions in the 1990s such as Synder igjen (1997) at Centralteatret in Oslo, with many performances recorded or adapted for video release. [33] The duo's live collaborations emphasized satirical humor and musical elements, sustaining regular tours and theater runs over decades. [32] In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Mathisen participated in a Prima Vera reunion with Falsk and Jahn Teigen, including a series of sold-out shows at Sentrum Scene in Oslo in 2000 and a short subsequent tour, leading to the live video release (a)live in 2000. [34] This period marked a continuation of his live stage activity, with occasional revues and performances extending into later years through ongoing collaborations with Falsk. [32]

Acting and narration

Brødrene Dal series

Tom Mathisen is best known for his role as Fortelleren (the Narrator), the distinctive storyteller voice that frames and guides the narrative in the classic Brødrene Dal children's comedy television series produced by NRK.[35] He is frequently referred to as the faithful narrator of the Brødrene Dal adventures, providing continuity and humorous commentary across the productions created by the comedy trio KLM—Knut Lystad, Lars Mjøen, and Trond Kirkvaag—who portrayed the brothers Gaus, Roms, and Brumund Dal.[35] Mathisen's voice role was a central and recurring element in the series, where he often appeared as an on-screen narrator interacting with the story in whimsical ways, such as in memorable scenes from Brødrene Dal og mysteriet om Karl XIIs gamasjer.[35] His narration extended to the 2010 feature film Brødrene Dal og vikingsverdets forbannelse, for which new scenes were specifically filmed featuring Mathisen as Fortelleren, since he had previously participated in the source material—a 1997 theater recording—only as a voice from a loudspeaker on stage.[36] This work forms part of Mathisen's broader contributions to NRK's children's comedy programming.

Other film and television credits

Tom Mathisen's other film credits consist primarily of occasional roles in Norwegian feature films, often tied to his long-term collaborations in comedy. One of his most notable appearances is in the comedy film Showbiz eller hvordan bli kjendis på en-to-tre! (1989), directed by Herodes Falsk, where he co-starred alongside Falsk and other comedians in a satirical take on celebrity culture framed as a modern fairy tale about a young boy seeking fame. [37] [38] The film reflects the humorous style shared by Mathisen and Falsk from their earlier work together. [39] He also featured in Prima Veras saga om Olav den hellige (1983), a film adaptation of the comedy group's satirical material, in which he participated as part of the ensemble cast. [39] Later in his career, Mathisen appeared in Olsenbanden jr. og det sorte gullet (2009), a family-oriented entry in the long-running Olsenbanden franchise. [39] Beyond these, his non-Brødrene Dal credits in film and television are limited, with his broader contributions emphasizing comedy performances, music, and narration rather than extensive dramatic acting. [40]

Legacy and recent activity

Ongoing work and influence

Tom Mathisen continues to remain active in Norwegian entertainment into the 2020s, performing occasional comedy shows and tours in collaboration with Herodes Falsk. [20] [41] Multiple concerts are scheduled at City Scene Fredrikstad in September and October 2025 as part of Prima Vera - The Musical. [41] He also maintains involvement in jazz as a guitarist with Mulens Portland Combo. Mathisen has released recent singles during this period, including "Mad Money" and "Fire up! (The BBQ Song)" in 2021, "The Excuse is the Booze" in 2022, and "Fylla Har Skylda 2.0" in 2023, several of which feature collaborations with Herodes Falsk. [42] [43] [44] [45] As a key figure in Norwegian humour since the 1970s, particularly through his enduring partnership with Herodes Falsk, Mathisen has contributed significantly to comedy and music satire in Norway. [46]

Collaborations and guest appearances

Tom Mathisen has participated in more than 40 record productions as a guest contributor, showcasing his versatility across musical and comedic recordings by various Norwegian artists. [47] [48] [8] These appearances often involve backing vocals, instrumentation, or comedic inserts on albums spanning genres from folk and pop to humor-oriented releases. One prominent one-off collaboration is the 2003 album Credo Zeppo, recorded with Herodes Falsk, featuring satirical tracks and marking a distinct project outside his longer-term partnerships. [49] Mathisen has also worked with Øyvind Blunck on sketches and musical contributions, including joint recordings and comedic material that highlight their shared background in Norwegian entertainment satire. [50] More recently, he made guest appearances on the television series Hver gang vi møtes in 2019, performing duets and collaborative segments with other participating artists. [20] These varied contributions underscore his extensive network within the Norwegian music and comedy scenes.
