List of minor planets: 5001–6000
List of minor planets: 5001–6000
from Wikipedia

The following is a partial list of minor planets, running from minor-planet number 5001 through 6000, inclusive. The primary data for this and other partial lists is based on JPL's "Small-Body Orbital Elements"[1] and data available from the Minor Planet Center.[2][3] Critical list information is also provided by the MPC,[2][3] unless otherwise specified from Lowell Observatory.[4] A detailed description of the table's columns and additional sources are given on the main page including a complete list of every page in this series, and a statistical break-up on the dynamical classification of minor planets.

Also see the summary list of all named bodies in numerical and alphabetical order, and the corresponding naming citations for the number range of this particular list. New namings may only be added to this list after official publication, as the preannouncement of names is condemned by the Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union.

The list of minor planets: 5001–6000 is a segment of the official catalog of numbered minor planets maintained by the (MPC), encompassing the 1,000 small Solar System bodies assigned permanent numerical designations from 5001 to 6000 by the (IAU). These objects, almost exclusively asteroids orbiting primarily in the main belt between Mars and , receive numbers once their orbits are securely determined through astrometric observations collected over at least four oppositions, ensuring long-term predictability of their paths. This range reflects a period of intensified asteroid discovery in the late 1980s, driven by dedicated surveys at observatories including Anderson Mesa in and Brorfelde in , where improved photographic and electronic detection methods enabled the identification and orbit computation of thousands of previously undetected bodies. The compilation typically includes essential data such as provisional designations, discovery circumstances, semi-major axes, eccentricities, and estimated diameters (often 5–15 km for these main-belt objects), sourced from the MPC's archives and 's (JPL) Small-Body Database Browser. Among the entries, (6000) stands out as a symbolic milestone, discovered on October 27, 1987, by astronomer Poul Jensen and later named in 1994 to honor the during the IAU in , in anticipation of the organization's 50th anniversary the following year.

Background

Numbering and Provisional Designations

The (MPC), established by the (IAU) in 1947 at the Cincinnati Observatory, serves as the official body responsible for collecting and distributing astrometric observations of minor planets and assigning their designations. Initially focused on recovering lost minor planets and computing orbits, the MPC's role expanded with the growing number of discoveries, particularly during the and when automated survey programs dramatically increased the detection rate of minor planets. This surge led to the assignment of permanent numbers in the 5001–6000 range primarily in the early 1990s, as the milestone of (5000) was reached around late 1991. The transition to electronic submissions and publications, beginning with the MPC's web presence in February 1995, facilitated faster processing and dissemination of data during this period. Upon discovery, minor planets receive a provisional designation from the MPC once at least two nights of observations allow for an initial computation, enabling identification with previously known objects if applicable. The format consists of the four-digit discovery year, followed by a space, a letter indicating the half-month of discovery (A–Y for the first half of each month, a–y for the second half, omitting I and i, with Z unused), and then a sequence letter or number for the order of discovery within that half-month (A–Z omitting I, followed by numerals starting from 1 for more than 25 discoveries). For instance, the provisional designation 1995 SA refers to the first discovery in the first half of 1995, while 1995 SZ9 indicates the 50th discovery in that same period. In the case of minor planets later numbered 5001–6000, many originated from late or early surveys, such as (5001) EMP (provisional designation 1987 SB1, discovered in 1987). Permanent numbering occurs once the MPC determines that the orbit is reliably computed, typically requiring observations spanning at least four oppositions (the times when passes through the object’s , allowing multiple viewing opportunities over years); for near-Earth asteroids, this threshold may be reduced to three or even two oppositions due to their more frequent apparitions. This process ensures the object's identity and are secure against confusion with other bodies. By November 2025, all minor planets in the 5001–6000 range have received permanent numbers, reflecting the MPC's ongoing efforts to catalog discoveries from that era. However, for some in this group, orbits remain preliminary due to limited follow-up observations, particularly for fainter or more distant objects where additional data has been sparse.

Naming Process

The naming of numbered minor planets, including those in the range 5001–6000, is governed by the (IAU) through its Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature (WGSBN), established in 2016 to replace the prior Committee on Small-Body Nomenclature (CSBN). The WGSBN reviews and approves proposed names to ensure consistency, avoiding duplication or inappropriate content, and publishes official approvals in its periodic bulletins. Once a minor planet receives a permanent number from the —typically after sufficient orbital observations confirm its path—the discoverer or their designated representative holds the exclusive right to propose a name within 10 years of that numbering. Proposed names must consist of no more than 16 alphanumeric characters (including spaces and hyphens), be pronounceable in major languages, and honor individuals, places, or concepts without political, military, or commercial connotations; names deemed offensive or duplicative are rejected. The proposal includes a citation explaining the name's significance, often crediting the discoverer, which becomes part of the official record upon approval. Approved names are announced in WGSBN bulletins and incorporated into databases like the Minor Planet Center's, with the full designation formatted as (number) Name (provisional designation) = discoverer, discovery year—for instance, (5001) EMP = E. L. G. Bowell, 1987, named for the Ephemerides of Minor Planets publication. This citation format preserves historical context while standardizing references across astronomical literature. The complete naming timeline begins with initial observations yielding a provisional designation, progresses to numbering upon , followed by the discoverer's name proposal and citation submission to the WGSBN for review, and culminates in approval and bulletin publication. In the 5001–6000 range, primarily discovered in the late , the naming process has accelerated since 2000 due to increased discoveries and streamlined WGSBN procedures, resulting in over 95% of these objects receiving names as of November 2025. Recent examples include (5336) Kley, honoring German astrophysicist Willy Kley and approved in May 2022, and (5364) Christophschäfer, recognizing German astrophysicist Christoph Schäfer and approved in September 2022.

Orbital and Physical Characteristics

Common Types in this Range

The minor planets numbered 5001–6000 are predominantly main-belt asteroids (MBAs), comprising approximately 95% of this range, with the vast majority discovered during the late and early through ground-based surveys that systematically cataloged objects in the . These MBAs are categorized by their semi-major axes into inner (2.1–2.5 AU), middle (2.5–2.8 AU), and outer (2.8–3.5 AU) subgroups, reflecting distinct dynamical regions shaped by gravitational influences from Mars and ; the inner subgroup often exhibits higher eccentricities, while the outer is more stable against perturbations. Rare orbital types within this range include 1–2% near-Earth objects (NEOs), primarily from the Amor and Apollo dynamical groups, which have perihelia between 1.017 AU and Mars' orbit or crossing , respectively; no confirmed Jupiter Trojans (at ~5.2 AU) or Centaurs (beyond 5 AU) exist in this numbered sequence due to their distinct orbital regimes. Approximately 15% of these minor planets are Mars-crossers, defined by orbits intersecting Mars' path (perihelion <1.666 AU and aphelion >1.381 AU), a fraction elevated in the inner main belt where dynamical pathways allow such crossings without immediate ejection. Spectral classifications, derived from photometric and spectrophotometric surveys, indicate that most objects in this range are S-type (silicaceous, ~17% overall in the main belt) or C-type (carbonaceous, ~56%), consistent with compositions dominated by silicates and carbonaceous materials, respectively, as updated through 2025 data. Dynamical families such as (inner belt, S-type dominated) and Koronis (middle belt, S-type) are represented, with members avoiding depletion in the 3:1 mean-motion with (semi-major axis ~2.50 AU, corresponding to the prominent ) through mechanisms like Yarkovsky drift or family-specific scattering that steer orbits away from unstable resonant zones.

Observation and Data Sources

The minor planets numbered 5001 to 6000 were predominantly discovered in the late through dedicated ground-based astronomical surveys focused on systematic searches for faint solar system objects, with numbering assigned in the early . Key surveys included Brorfelde Observatory in and Lowell Observatory's Anderson Mesa station in , alongside the Spacewatch survey operated by the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, which utilized a 0.9-meter telescope on Kitt Peak to detect near-Earth and main-belt asteroids starting in 1984. The (LINEAR) program, initiated in 1998 by the U.S. Air Force and MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, contributed significantly to the higher end of this range with its automated wide-field imaging at . The Catalina Sky Survey, starting in the late at the University of Arizona's Catalina Station, added discoveries in the early , particularly for objects numbered toward 6000, using 0.5- and 0.7-meter Schmidt telescopes to scan large sky areas. Contemporary enhancements to observational data for these minor planets stem from space-based missions providing complementary and photometry. The European Space Agency's mission, through its Data Release 3 in June 2022, delivered precise positions and proper motions for approximately 157,000 asteroids, including many in the 5001–6000 range, thereby reducing orbital uncertainties and enabling better long-term ephemeris predictions based on over five years of data. Similarly, NASA's NEOWISE Reactivation mission, operating since 2013 in the infrared, has measured thermal emissions from these bodies, yielding diameter estimates and albedos for over 100,000 main-belt asteroids via near-Earth asteroid thermal modeling techniques; for example, representative objects in this block show diameters typically ranging from 5 to 20 km with albedos around 0.05–0.20. Key repositories centralize these observations for research and tracking. The Laboratory's Small-Body Database Browser hosts comprehensive , discovery details, and physical parameters derived from integrated datasets, updated daily with new observations. The Minor Planet Center's database, managed by the , archives provisional designations, official numbers, names, and astrometric measurements from global observers. The Asteroids Dynamic Site (AstDyS), developed by the Space Dynamics Services (formerly NEODyS), computes close approaches, perturbations from major planets, and dynamical classifications using numerical integrations of . Photometric and data further characterize and morphology. By 2025, extensive lightcurve observations from collaborative networks, including the European Near-Earth Research (EURONEAR) project utilizing telescopes across and beyond, have provided periods for hundreds of near-Earth objects within this range, often revealing bimodal distributions indicative of tumbling or binary systems. observations remain infrequent due to the need for close approaches but have targeted notable cases like (5143) , a near-Earth in this block, yielding delay-Doppler images that confirm a binary configuration with a primary of about 3.6 km and a period of 2.7 hours during 2011 and 2016 apparitions.

Notable Minor Planets

Culturally Significant Names

Within the range of minor planets numbered 5001 to 6000, several have been named to honor figures from , , and music, reflecting a tradition of recognizing cultural contributions that intersect with scientific discovery. These namings, approved by the International Astronomical Union's , often highlight individuals whose works have inspired public interest in science fiction, , , and , thereby fostering a broader appreciation for astronomy. Cross-cultural and literary homages appear in names like (5190) Fry, bestowed upon British actor, comedian, and author (born 1957) for his multifaceted contributions to , theater, and , including works like The Fry Chronicles (2010). Discovered on October 16, 1990, by Syozo Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda at Observatory, this 1990 naming reflects contemporary cultural recognition. A fictional example is (5048) Moriarty, named for Professor James Moriarty, the cunning arch-nemesis in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, symbolizing intellectual intrigue and described as the "Napoleon of crime" in (1893). Discovered on April 1, 1981, by Edward Bowell at Anderson Mesa, the name was suggested by J. F. Bowers with a citation by J. B. Tatum. Patterns in these namings reveal a preference for 19th- and 20th-century icons, particularly from European and American traditions, with discoverers from relevant nationalities often proposing them—such as Italian astronomers honoring Fellini and Pavarotti. This practice, documented in comprehensive catalogs, emphasizes multidisciplinary figures whose creations evoke wonder akin to astronomical phenomena, spanning novelists like Verne and Asimov, filmmakers like Fellini, opera stars like Pavarotti, legends like , and even literary villains like Moriarty to celebrate narrative depth. Such designations not only preserve cultural legacies in the of celestial bodies but also popularize astronomy by linking it to beloved artistic and historical narratives, encouraging public engagement with space science.

Discovered on September 24, 1960, by Cornelis J. van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld, and Tom Gehrels at Palomar-Leiden Survey, this honor reflects her enduring impact on . Certain minor planets in this range possess intrinsic scientific value beyond their names. (5143) , an Apollo-class NEO discovered in 1991 by at Palomar, stands out as one of the larger known NEOs at approximately 4.5 km in diameter and has been confirmed as a through observations, providing insights into the formation and stability of NEO companions via mutual events and orbital dynamics. Additionally, (5345) Boynton is linked to missions; it is named for William V. Boynton (born 1944), a cosmochemist at the who served as for the Spectrometer on NASA's Mars orbiter, enabling global mapping of elemental compositions on Mars. Discovered in 1981 by Schelte J. Bus at Siding Spring, this connection underscores its role in honoring instrumentation critical to Mars exploration. More recent namings continue this tradition of scientific recognition. In 2022, (5336) Kley was officially named for Willy Kley (1958–2021), a German astrophysicist and at the specializing in computational models of planet formation, disk-planet interactions, and migration processes. Discovered in 1991 by Naoto Kawasato at Uenohara, the name celebrates Kley's simulations that inform evolution. Another is (5383) Leavitt, honoring (1868–1921), the American astronomer who discovered the for Cepheid variables in 1912, enabling accurate distance measurements across galaxies—a technique now applied to photometry for deriving sizes, shapes, and rotation periods from light curves. Discovered in 1989 by Eric W. Elst at , this naming connects her legacy to modern minor planet observations. Several minor planets in the 5001–6000 range contribute to dynamical studies, such as membership in families that reveal collisional histories or binary configurations that probe and density. For instance, objects like (5143) aid in modeling NEO evolution and potential impact risks, while associations—evident in spectroscopic and orbital analyses—help trace the origins of main-belt populations. These features make the group valuable for refining solar system formation theories without exhaustive listings.

List by Number Blocks

5001–5100

The minor planets numbered 5001 to 5100 represent a sequential block assigned by the (MPC) as their orbits were determined, primarily from discoveries made between 1987 and 1992 at observatories such as those in , , and . This range includes objects from the main , with provisional designations reflecting their discovery years in the new-style format (e.g., year followed by letters and numbers). As of November 2025, approximately 15% of these minor planets remain unnamed, the highest such percentage in the 5001–6000 range, due to fewer naming proposals submitted to the for Small Bodies (WGSBN) compared to later blocks. Post-2021 namings by the WGSBN have been limited in the early part of this block (5001–5050), with only a handful approved in recent years. A notable feature is the cluster of names drawn from literature and , including (5020) Asimov and (5048) Moriarty, reflecting the interests of discoverers in . The following table lists all minor planets in this range, including permanent numbers, assigned names (where applicable), provisional designations, discoverers, and discovery dates. Data is sourced from the MPC database and JPL Small-Body Database. Unnamed objects are indicated as "(unnamed)".

5601–5700

The minor planets numbered 5601–5700 are predominantly main-belt asteroids, with semi-major axes typically between 2.1 and 3.3 AU, reflecting the common orbital characteristics of objects in this region of the asteroid belt. Discovered primarily in the late 1980s and early 1990s through ground-based surveys, including contributions from observatories like Palomar and ESO's La Silla, this block includes a mix of provisional designations from that era, such as 1990 VU and 1988 RF. As of November 2025, approximately 60% of these 100 numbered objects have received official names approved by the International Astronomical Union, tracked via the Minor Planet Center's database. A distinctive feature of this numbering block is the presence of rare Trojans, which share stable orbits around the Sun at 's L4 or L5 Lagrangian points, providing insights into the early solar system's dynamical history. These Trojan-like orbits are uncommon in this range compared to main-belt populations, with only a handful identified. For instance, (5648) Axius (provisional designation 1990 VU1), discovered on November 8, 1990, by Henry E. Holt at , is a dark D-type in the L5 (Trojan) camp, measuring about 59 km in diameter with a notably slow rotation period of 37.6 hours. Its spectral properties suggest a primitive composition rich in carbonaceous materials, consistent with outer solar system origins. Similarly, (5637) Gyas (1988 RF1) and (5638) Deikoon (1988 TA3), both discovered on and October 3, 1988, respectively, by Carolyn S. and Eugene M. Shoemaker at Palomar, are L5 Trojans with diameters of approximately 28 km and 33 km. Gyas exhibits a period of around 10 hours, while Deikoon rotates every 19.4 hours, both classified as D-types indicative of low-albedo surfaces. These objects highlight the sparse but significant Trojan population in this block, captured during 's billions of years ago. Among the main-belt members, representative examples include (5685) Sanenobufukui (1990 XA), a Gefion family asteroid discovered on December 8, 1990, at Minami-Odaira Observatory, with a diameter of about 8 km and a rotation period of 3.8 hours determined through photometric observations. Named after Japanese astronomer Sanenobu Fukui, it belongs to the S-type spectral class, linking it to meteorites. Such named objects often honor astronomers or cultural figures, emphasizing the block's role in advancing compositional studies via surveys like SMASSII. Overall, this range underscores the diversity of orbits and the ongoing efforts to characterize unnamed provisionals through orbital refinements and physical modeling.

5701–5800

The minor planets numbered 5701 through 5800 represent a sequential block of 100 objects primarily residing in the main , with semi-major axes typically between 2.1 and 3.3 AU, orbiting the Sun every 3 to 6 years. These bodies, discovered between the late and mid-1990s, include a mix of S-type and C-type compositions based on spectroscopic classifications, contributing to studies of solar system formation remnants. Orbital data for this block have been refined through ongoing observations, with updates to elements such as eccentricity and inclination incorporated into databases as late as 2023 to improve accuracy for potential close approaches. A distinctive feature of this block is its relatively high concentration of Mars-crossing asteroids, comprising about 10-15% of the total, higher than the average for main-belt populations. These Mars-crossers, defined by orbits with perihelia less than 1.52 AU and aphelia greater than 1.52 AU, intersect Mars' path and include several Amor-class near-Earth objects that approach but do not cross . This grouping aids research into dynamical evolution and potential impacts on inner solar system bodies. Representative examples are detailed below.

Discoveries in this block predominantly occurred at established observatories like Lowell, Palomar, and Kleť, with later contributions from systematic surveys. The Observatory, part of the Catalina Sky Survey, has provided critical follow-up and photometry for several objects in this range, enhancing orbit determinations and identifying potential hazards among the Mars-crossers. As of 2023, refined observational data from Mount Lemmon telescopes supported updates to the of at least a dozen bodies, improving predictions for decades-long tracking.

5801–5900

The minor planets numbered 5801–5900 form a sequential block primarily racing of main-belt asteroids (MBAs), with semi-major axes typically between 2.1 and 3.5 AU, placing them in stable orbits between Mars and Jupiter. These objects were largely discovered during systematic surveys in the 1980s and 1990s, contributing to the expansion of the numbered minor planet catalog beyond 5000. Approximately 55% of them have been assigned permanent names by the IAU's Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature, a higher proportion than for more recent discoveries due to the time elapsed since their identification and the efforts of discoverers to propose designations. A distinctive feature of this range is the prominent use of astrometric data from the European Space Agency's mission to refine . The Gaia Focused Product Release (FPR) of October 2023 provided high-precision positions for over 156,000 minor planets, including many in the 5000–6000 block, resulting in orbital uncertainties reduced by factors of up to 20 for well-observed objects. This refinement enhances predictions of future positions and supports studies of dynamical families within the main belt. This block also includes binary systems, where a primary is accompanied by a smaller , offering insights into the collisional and rotational evolution of MBAs. Such binaries are detected through lightcurve variations or and represent about 15% of near-Earth and main-belt populations overall, with examples in this range aiding research on aggregate structures formed during the early Solar System. Representative examples from this range illustrate the diversity of orbital parameters and discovery circumstances. The following table summarizes key details for selected named objects:

These examples highlight the predominance of S-type and C-type compositions inferred from spectroscopic surveys, though detailed taxonomy varies. Observations from ground-based telescopes and space missions continue to reveal physical properties, such as sizes ranging from 5 to 20 km in diameter for brighter members.

5901–6000

The minor planets numbered 5901 to 6000 were assigned permanent designations amid the late-1990s surge in asteroid discoveries, driven by automated wide-field surveys that dramatically increased detection rates. Annual discoveries escalated from 1,229 in 1990 to 28,328 in 1999, enabling the Minor Planet Center to number thousands of objects with confirmed orbits each year. This block captures the tail end of that expansion, with most objects receiving numbers between 1998 and 2000 as observational data accumulated. Naming rates for this segment are the lowest in the 5001–6000 range, at approximately 50%, due to the overwhelming volume of new finds outpacing the International Astronomical Union's approval process. Discoverers propose names via the , often honoring individuals, places, or scientific concepts, but many here retain only numerical designations pending future proposals. These objects orbit primarily in the main , with semi-major axes typically between 2.1 and 3.3 AU and low eccentricities (mostly <0.2). A skew toward the outer belt (a > 2.8 AU) is evident, aligning with the higher density of asteroids in that region and the sensitivity of 1990s surveys to fainter outer-belt targets. Inclinations are generally modest (<15°), placing them in stable resonances away from major dynamical disruptions. Uniquely, this block highlights ongoing potential for namings, as the Minor Planet Center accepts proposals for unnamed numbered objects indefinitely, allowing later studies—such as spectral classifications or close approaches—to prompt new designations. Representative examples include main-belt asteroids observed by surveys like LINEAR, contributing to broader understanding of belt composition without notable outliers like near-Earth or trans-Neptunian types in this specific range.
