Abingdon, Illinois
Abingdon is a town in Knox County, Illinois, United States, 50 miles (80 km) west of Peoria. The population was 2,951 as of the 2020 census.
The city was first settled in 1828. Abingdon was laid out in 1836 and named after Abingdon, Maryland, the native home of a first settler. It was incorporated in 1857.
It was named after Abingdon, Maryland, the birthplace of one of its founders.
In 1894 William C. Hooker of Abingdon applied for a patent on a common spring-loaded mousetrap. In June of 1907 the patent was awarded to William C. Hooker, William Armstrong, and Knox Mark.[citation needed]
Abingdon is located in southwestern Knox County. Illinois Route 41 passes through the center of the city, leading north 11 miles (18 km) to Galesburg, the county seat, and south 20 miles (32 km) to Bushnell.
According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Abingdon has a total area of 1.43 square miles (3.70 km2), all land.
Abingdon is part of the Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.
As of the 2020 census there were 2,951 people, 1,456 households, and 810 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,070.88 inhabitants per square mile (799.57/km2). There were 1,409 housing units at an average density of 988.77 per square mile (381.77/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.58% White, 1.39% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 4.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.08% of the population.
