Springer Nature is a multinational academic publishing company headquartered in Germany and the United Kingdom, formed in May 2015 through the merger of Springer Science+Business Media and Nature Publishing Group, along with Palgrave Macmillan and Macmillan Education from Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.[1] The company publishes peer-reviewed journals, books, and digital content across scientific, technical, medical, and humanities disciplines, including the flagship Nature portfolio known for high-impact research.[2] With roots tracing back to Julius Springer's founding of Springer-Verlag in 1842, it has evolved into one of the world's largest providers of scholarly content, offering over 2,900 journals and more than 300,000 books.[3]
The publisher emphasizes advancing scientific discovery through robust peer-reviewed science, open access initiatives—pioneered via its BioMed Central subsidiary—and technology-enabled platforms for researchers.[4] Springer Nature supports diverse research areas, from biomedicine to social sciences, and has expanded into educational and professional publishing, serving global academic, governmental, and corporate audiences.[2] Notable achievements include hosting landmark publications like the Nature journal, established in 1869, which has reported breakthroughs in fields such as genetics and physics.[5]
Despite its prominence, Springer Nature has faced significant criticisms regarding research integrity and editorial practices. In 2021, it issued expressions of concern for over 400 papers in two journals due to issues in special issues, followed by hundreds of retractions in titles like Soft Computing amid concerns over guest-edited content and potential fraud.[6][7] Scientific Reports, a high-volume open-access journal under its umbrella, has drawn scrutiny for publishing questionable research, prompting open letters from integrity watchdogs.[8] Additionally, allegations of political bias have emerged, including downplaying certain hypotheses like COVID-19 lab origins and content adjustments to align with sensitivities in markets like China, leading to decisions such as the U.S. government's termination of subscriptions in 2025.[9] These incidents highlight challenges in maintaining impartiality and rigor in a high-throughput publishing environment influenced by academic and institutional pressures.
