Benjamin Franklin died at his home in Philadelphia at the age of 84 from a pleuritic attack. His death was mourned both in America and France, and he was remembered for his contributions as a statesman, scientist, inventor, and philosopher.

The Second Continental Congress established the United States Post Office and appointed Benjamin Franklin as the first United States Postmaster General. This appointment recognized Franklin's extensive experience in postal administration and his commitment to American independence.
