Bobby Charlton was born in Ashington, Northumberland, to a coal miner father. His older brother Jack would also become a professional footballer.

Charlton impressed a Manchester United scout while playing for East Northumberland Boys, leading to his signing with the club.

Charlton made his debut for the Manchester United first-team at the age of 18.
