Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was born into a small northern German duchy and received a modest education typical of her time.
Birth

Charlotte was born as Sophia Charlotte, the youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elizabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen, at Untere Schloss (Lower Castle) in Mirow.
Brother's Succession
1752
Her brother Adolphus Frederick succeeded to the ducal throne, giving Charlotte her first experience of princely duties and court life.
Engagement to George III

Charlotte was chosen as a prospective consort for King George III due to her lack of experience in power politics and her upbringing in a minor German duchy.
