Tennant was the youngest of three children to Helen McDonald, a founding member of Accord Hospice, and Alexander McDonald, a local Presbyterian minister who later served as the moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

David Tennant married Georgia Tennant (née Moffett), whom he met on the set of "Doctor Who". They have five children together.
