Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born in West Plains, Missouri, to Hazel Victoria, a stenographer, and Loren Wayne Van Dyke, a salesman.

Van Dyke left high school in his senior year to join the United States Army Air Forces for pilot training during World War II.

Van Dyke finally received his high school diploma at the age of 78.
