Childhood and upbringing
Edward Kerr was born on October 14, 1966, in Kansas City, Missouri.[3] Raised in Kansas City, Kerr's early interests included sports, such as golf and general athletic pursuits, as well as a passion for reading.[3] Kerr attended and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia.[6][7]College education
Kerr pursued higher education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1990.[7][3] Upon receiving his degree, he moved to Los Angeles in 1990 to embark on an acting career.[4][8]Acting career
Early career in Los Angeles
Following his graduation from Vanderbilt University, Edward Kerr relocated to Los Angeles in 1990 to pursue acting professionally.[2] Upon arrival, he focused on building his presence in the industry through extensive commercial work, which provided initial exposure and financial stability while he sought larger opportunities.[9] In 1993, Kerr secured a holding deal with NBC, a significant milestone that guaranteed the network first refusal on his services and opened doors to scripted television.[9] This deal led directly to his debut in the network's miniseries The Secrets of Lake Success, where he portrayed Tony Parrish across its three episodes, marking his entry into primetime drama. Kerr's breakthrough came the following year with his first major television role as Lieutenant James Brody, the seaQuest's weapons officer, on the NBC science fiction series seaQuest DSV.[9] He appeared in 26 episodes spanning the show's second and third seasons from 1995 to 1996, contributing to the series' exploration of underwater adventures and military intrigue.Television roles
Building on his foundation from seaQuest DSV, Kerr transitioned into more prominent comedic roles in the early 2000s, including portraying the charming Jake Riley in the NBC sitcom Three Sisters, where he appeared in 17 episodes across its 2001–2002 run, contributing to the show's ensemble dynamic centered on three sisters navigating family life. His recurring performance as Rick, the on-again-off-again love interest to Val Tyler (played by Jennie Garth), spanned 15 episodes of the WB comedy What I Like About You during its 2004–2005 seasons, adding romantic tension to the series' exploration of sibling relationships and young adulthood in New York.[10] In the mid-2000s, Kerr took on supporting parts in ensemble dramas, recurring as Ian Slattery in two episodes of ABC's Men in Trees in 2006, where he portrayed a local resident entangled in the show's themes of romance and self-discovery in a remote Alaskan town.[11] This was followed by another recurring appearance as Dennis, a professional contact in the high-stakes world of fashion and media, across two episodes of NBC's Lipstick Jungle in 2008, enhancing the narrative arcs of ambitious career women led by Brooke Shields. Kerr also made notable guest appearances during this period, including as Jason Dique, a brief romantic interest for Carrie Bradshaw, in the 2000 episode "Escape from New York" of HBO's Sex and the City. Similarly, in 2006, he guest-starred as Ted Dalton, the concerned stepfather in a family facing a mysterious illness, in the House, M.D. episode "Need to Know." Kerr's television presence continued into the 2010s with a significant recurring role as Pastor Ted Wilson on ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars, appearing in 11 episodes from 2012 to 2017; his character served as a moral authority figure in the small town of Rosewood, complicating the central mystery involving teenage secrets and threats. More recently, in 2019, he guest-starred as Captain Edwards, a naval officer overseeing a high-risk submarine operation, in the SEAL Team episode "Time to Shine," underscoring his versatility in action-oriented procedurals.[12] Since 2019, Kerr has not taken on new acting roles, as of November 2025. Throughout his career, Kerr has benefited from exclusive talent holding deals with major networks including NBC, Paramount, and ABC, which supported his steady stream of television opportunities.[2]Film roles
Kerr transitioned from television appearances to feature films in the mid-1990s, beginning with supporting roles that showcased his versatility in thrillers and family adventures. In 1995, he portrayed Nick Cain, the brother of Christopher Reeve's paralyzed detective character, in the crime thriller Above Suspicion, marking his first starring film role alongside co-stars Kim Cattrall and Joe Mantegna.[13] That same year, Kerr appeared as Prince Morgan in the direct-to-video family fantasy Magic Island, a pirate-themed adventure directed by Sam Irvin and featuring Zachery Ty Bryan.[14] By the late 1990s, Kerr secured lead roles in independent and made-for-TV projects, earning recognition for his comedic and dramatic range. He starred as Jack Sullivan in the romantic comedy Confessions of a Sexist Pig (1998), opposite Traylor Howard and Lauren Graham, a film that won awards at multiple festivals for its witty exploration of gender dynamics.[15] Also in 1998, Kerr led as aspiring actor Roy Guyton in the TNT TV movie Legalese, a satirical legal drama co-starring James Garner, Mary-Louise Parker, and Kathleen Turner, for which he received critical praise for his charismatic performance.[16] Kerr continued with supporting parts in major releases into the early 2000s, including a brief role as a pilot in the supernatural thriller The Astronaut's Wife (1999), directed by Rand Ravich and starring Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron. Later independent work included the role of ambitious businessman Chad Moore in the inspirational docudrama The Shift (2009), produced by Hay House and featuring Portia de Rossi, which drew from the teachings of Dr. Wayne Dyer.[17] While Kerr's film output slowed in the 2010s and 2020s, focusing more on television, these projects highlighted his shift toward character-driven narratives in smaller-scale productions.Personal life
