Emmett is sent back to 1885 by lightning strike. He buries the DeLorean and sends Marty a letter detailing where the DeLorean is, and what is wrong with it.

Emmett establishes himself as the town blacksmith, a practical skill that allows him to integrate into the community and provides him with the resources to pursue his scientific interests in a rudimentary way. The blacksmith is needed to make a part for the DeLorean.

Emmett meets Clara Clayton, a schoolteacher who shares his passion for science and literature. Their intellectual connection blossoms into a romantic relationship that profoundly impacts Emmett's life.

Emmett has to choose whether to go back to the future and see Marty again, or stay in 1885 with Clara. He decides to burn the time travel blueprints. As a result, he remains in 1885 with Clara.
