ArmaLite and the AR-15 Development

This timeline focuses on Stoner's pivotal role at ArmaLite, where he conceived and developed the AR-15 rifle, a revolutionary design that would transform modern warfare.
Joining ArmaLite
1954
Eugene Stoner joined ArmaLite, a division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation. ArmaLite sought to innovate in firearms design, and Stoner's skills and ideas were a perfect fit.
AR-10 Development
Mid-1950s
Stoner initially worked on the AR-10, a 7.62mm rifle intended as a replacement for the M14. While the AR-10 showed promise, it ultimately wasn't adopted by the U.S. military in its original form.
AR-15 Development
Late 1950s
Following the AR-10's setbacks, Stoner designed the AR-15, a scaled-down version chambered in 5.56mm. This rifle featured innovative design elements, including lightweight materials and a modular design.
Sale of AR-15 Rights to Colt
1959
ArmaLite, lacking the resources to mass-produce the AR-15, sold the rights to the design to Colt's Patent Fire Arm Company. This marked a turning point for the AR-15, setting the stage for its widespread adoption.
