She completed her B.A. from Carleton College in 1986.[2] After teaching for three years, she came across the work of John Holt, which led her to reconsider her approach to education.[3][4]

In 1991 she wrote The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education.[1] At that time, home-schooling was illegal in some US states.[5]
