What happened with Isaac Newton on 22 December, 1717

On 22 December 1717, a royal proclamation was issued, forbidding the exchange of gold guineas for more than 21 silver shillings. This resulted in a silver shortage and effectively moved Britain from the silver standard to its first gold standard.
