Jack Leary is an American producer, writer, and director known for his collaborations with his father, the actor and comedian Denis Leary, on television comedy projects. He co-runs the production company Amoeba alongside Denis Leary, where he oversees creative development and production across television, film, and new media. [1] Leary has served as executive producer on the Fox series Going Dutch, a father-son project, and other shows including Dogs Playing Poker. [2] [3] His professional relationship with his father includes providing candid on-set feedback, with Denis Leary describing him as "the Denis whisperer." [2] Born on April 9, 1990, in London, England, to Denis Leary and author Ann Leary during an unexpected premature birth while his parents were visiting for work, Leary grew up in the United States and began his entertainment career in his late teens as a production assistant on projects such as Rescue Me, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). [3] [4] He advanced to roles on his father's FX series Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, contributing as a writers assistant, writer on two episodes, and associate producer across its run from 2015 to 2016. [3] Leary's work reflects a focus on comedy television, building on family collaborations while establishing his own presence in creative and production oversight. [1]

Early life

Birth and family background

Jack Leary was born on April 9, 1990, in London, England, three months prematurely after his mother's water unexpectedly broke shortly after the family's arrival in the United Kingdom.[3][5][4] The birth occurred during what was intended to be a brief weekend trip for his father, actor and comedian Denis Leary, to perform on a comedy show.[5] The premature delivery required extended care through Britain's National Health Service, as detailed in his mother Ann Leary's memoir about the experience.[6] He is the son of Denis Leary and author Ann Leary, and the brother of Devin Leary.[4][5] His father is a distant cousin of television host Conan O'Brien.[5] Despite his birth in the UK, Leary was not automatically granted British citizenship.[5]

Career

Early career as production assistant

Jack Leary began his career in the entertainment industry as a production assistant, gaining practical experience on both television and film projects during the late 2000s and early 2010s. His initial credited role came in 2007 as a production assistant for one episode of the FX series Rescue Me, which provided early exposure to television production processes. This opportunity aligned with family ties, as the series was created by and starred his father, Denis Leary. [3] In 2012, Leary worked as a production assistant on the television movie Bronx Warrants. He subsequently contributed to several high-profile feature films and series in uncredited production assistant capacities. In 2013, he served on Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street in an uncredited production assistant role. [3] From 2013 to 2014, Leary worked uncredited as a production assistant on nine episodes of the FX espionage drama The Americans. His final early-career credit in this capacity came in 2014 as a production assistant on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. [3] These behind-the-scenes roles across varied genres and scales helped build his foundational knowledge of production operations before transitioning to more prominent positions later in his career. [3]

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Jack Leary was involved in multiple behind-the-scenes roles on the FX comedy series Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2015–2016), which was created by and starred his father Denis Leary.[3] He initially worked as writers assistant for 10 episodes during the show's first season in 2015, supporting the writers' room.[3] Leary progressed to receiving writing credits on two episodes across the 2015–2016 run.[3] In 2016, for the second season, he was credited as associate producer on 10 episodes, a role focused on production coordination rather than executive oversight.[3] He also made a minor on-screen appearance as the character Manny in one episode during 2016.[7] These contributions represented Leary's shift toward creative and producing responsibilities on the series.[3]

Amoeba Productions and executive producing

Jack Leary runs Amoeba Productions alongside Denis Leary, overseeing creative development and production for projects across television, film, and new media under the Amoeba banner.[1][8] In his executive role at the company, Leary has served as executive producer on several television projects. He was an executive producer on the 2021 animated series Dogs Playing Poker.[3] Leary also serves as executive producer on the Fox comedy series Going Dutch (2025–2026), contributing to five episodes of the series produced under Amoeba.[3][8]
