Naval Career

Joining the Navy Reserve

Strauss applied to join the U.S. Navy Reserve and received an officer's commission as a lieutenant intelligence officer.

Active Duty

1939-1940

Strauss volunteered for active duty and was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance.

Staff Assistant

1941

Strauss became a Staff Assistant to the Chief at the Bureau of Ordnance and helped organize and manage Navy munitions work.

Special Assistant to Secretary of the Navy

1944

Strauss was employed by James V. Forrestal as his special assistant.

Promotion to Commodore

July 1945

Strauss was promoted to commodore.

Promotion to Rear Admiral

November 1945

Strauss was promoted to rear admiral by President Harry S. Truman.
