The Democratic Party was founded as the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) on 26 March 2014 as a merger between the previous Democratic Party and the preparatory committee of the New Political Vision Party (NPVP) led by Ahn Cheol-soo. The party changed its name to the current name on 28 December 2015. In the 2016 legislative election, the party won a plurality of seats in the National Assembly, becoming the largest party in the National Assembly. In 2017, the Democratic Party presidential candidate Moon Jae-in was elected as the president of South Korea. In 2020, the party won an absolute majority of seats in the National Assembly. In 2022, the Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae Myung lost the election to PPP candidate Yoon Suk Yeol. Later that year, the Democratic Party, Open Democratic Party, and New Wave merged to form a big tent party. The party retained its majority in the 2024 legislative election. In 2025, held after the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol, the Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae Myung was elected as the president of South Korea.
The formation of a nationalist party immediately after liberation Shortly after liberation on August 15, 1945, the nationalist forces of Joseon promoted the formation of a political party in several branches. Ahn Jae-hong formed the Nationalist Party, but the majority of the forces that have been carrying out the national movement since Japanese colonial era showed a movement to form a separate political organization. Kim Byeong-ro and Baek Kwan-soo, who were the central officials of the Singanhoe, Cho Byung-ok from the Suyang Dongwoohoe, Lee In and Kim Yong-moo, legal professionals, Won Se-hoon and Park Myung-hwan of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Kim Yak-soo, a former official of the Joseon Communist Party, held a party promotion meeting on August 28, 1945. On the other hand, the Korean People's Party's promotional meeting was held with members of the group who studied abroad in Europe and America, including Jang Deok-soo, Baek Nam-hoon, Kim Do-yeon, Choi Yoon-dong, Hong Seong-ha, Lee Soon-tak, Koo Ja-ok, Yoo Eok-gyeom, Yoon Bo-sun, Heo Jeong, and Chung No-sik. Both forces shared the perception that the nationalist party should not be divided, and on September 2, Kim Byeong-ro, Baek Kwan-soo, Won Se-hoon, Jang Deok-soo, Baek Nam-hoon, and Chung Noh-sik decided to work together through negotiations.
Later, on September 4, the Korean Democratic Party (HNP) was held at Hyeopseong School of Business in Nakwon-dong, Seoul. Kim Byung-ro was appointed as the general affairs manager, Jang Deok-soo as the planning manager, Kim Yak-soo as the organization manager, Jeong No-sik as the local manager, Park Yong-hee as the finance manager, Ham Sang-hoon as the propaganda manager, Park Chan-hee as the information manager, and Kim Yong-moo as the review manager.
On September 6, the declaration of the People's Republic of Korea (artificial) was made, led by Park Heon-young's reconstructionist Chosun Communist Party. This was an opportunity for a number of nationalist forces, including Song Jin-woo, to participate in politics. Song Jin-woo proposed holding a national convention, advocating 'absolute support for the provisional government' and 'collection of national capabilities'. He formed the National Convention Preparatory Committee on September 7 based on the 'Provisional Government and Allied Return Preparatory Committee', and Song Jin-woo was appointed as the chairman and Seo Sang-il and Won Se-hoon were appointed as the vice chairman. The National Convention Preparatory Committee appointed Kwon Dong-jin, Oh Se-chang, and Kim Chang-sook as advisors, and appointed Kim Joon-yeon, Foreign Affairs Jang Taek-sang, Investigator Yoon Chi-young, Organization Song Pil-man, Information Seol-sik, and Security Hannam-soo. Since then, Song Jin-woo has participated in the Korean Democratic Party's promotional committee as the chairman of the National Convention Preparatory Committee and led the rally of nationalist forces. The declaration of the People's Republic of Korea and the attempt to take the initiative by communist forces promoted the unity of nationalist forces. The Korean Democratic Party was founded on Sept. 16 with about 1,600 people in attendance, and Song Jin-woo was appointed as the chief executive officer on Sept. 21. Regional administrators were Kim Do-yeon in Gyeonggi Province, Cho Byung-ok in Chungcheong Province, Baek Kwan-soo in Honam, Seo Sang-il in North Gyeongsang Province, Heo Jeong in South Gyeongsang Province, Baek Nam-hoon in Hwanghae, Kim Dong-won in Pyeongan and Won Se-hoon in Hamgyeong Province. Syngman Rhee, Kim Gu, Lee Si-young, Moon Chang-beom, Seo Jae-pil, Kwon Dong-jin, and Oh Se-chang were elected as the party's leaders, and Song Jin-woo practically led the party.
At the first Central Executive Committee held on Sept. 22, secretariat chief Na Yong-kyun, party chief Lee In, foreign minister Jang Deok-soo, organization chief Kim Yak-soo, finance minister Park Yong-hee, propaganda chief Ham Sang-hoon, intelligence chief Park Chan-hee, agriculture minister Hong Seong-ha, education and education chief Kim Yong-moo, welfare chief Yoo Jin-hee, investigation chief Yoo Jin-hee, and liaison chief Choi Yoon-dong were appointed as the head of the Central Board of Audit and Inspection. In addition, a security command was set up, and Seo Sang-cheon was appointed as the general secretary and command, and Han Jin-hee was appointed as the chief of staff.
On November 1, 1945, the 3rd Central Executive Committee established three departments: the youth department, the training department, and the women's department, and appointed Park Myung-hwan, the youth department head, and Seo Sang-cheon, the training department head. In addition, the head of the party was replaced by Shin Yun-guk, the head of the culture department was replaced by Lee Kwan-gu, and the liaison department was renamed to the local department and Cho Heon-young was appointed as the head of the department.
In 1945, the early Han Democratic Party was led by the Dong-A Ilbo and Honam political forces among the national movement forces under the Japanese colonial rule, and was formed by a coalition of two major Christian forces except for the Cheondogyo line: Christian forces in the Heung Division, Suyang-dong Friendship Association, Northwest region, and Christian forces in the Dongzhi Society, Heunggurakbu, and Kiho region. It was a party that included many socialists who had different ideologies and lines from communism. As the arguments of Song Nam-heon and Kim Jong-beom, who joined the Han Democratic Party in the second half of 1946, left the party in the second half of 1946, and were active as middlemen, the early Han Democratic Party had a constant character of a political coalition party in which people with various political spheres, from conservative political orientations to social democrats to anarchists, participated extensively. On September 16, 1945, the Korean Democratic Party was founded at the Cheondogyo Memorial Hall in Seoul with about 1,600 people participating. The Democratic Party of Korea, the Korean National Party, the Korean National Party, and the People's Congress Preparatory Committee participated in the party. The party code included the completion of the independence of the Korean people, establishment of democratic identity, and promotion of the welfare of the working public. In the early days, the Korean Democratic Party took a cooperative attitude with the US military government, emphasizing the anti-tak and anti-communist lines in response to the declaration of the Korean People's Republic. After that, it was disbanded on January 26, 1949, and some people participated and reorganized into the Democratic People's Party. After the establishment of the party, the Korean Democratic Party cooperated with the U.S. military government to maintain an anti-tak and anti-communist line, and organized regional branches to expand political influence and encourage participation in various social classes.
