Theresa Berkley, a 19th-century English dominatrix, died in London in September 1836. Her death led to the discovery of the nature of her work by her brother, a missionary in Australia, and the subsequent escheating of her £100,000 estate to the crown after he and her executor, Dr. Vance, refused to claim it.
