Overview
Air Astra, operating as Astra Airways Limited, is a privately owned Bangladeshi airline incorporated in July 2021 under the Registrar of Joint-Stock Companies and Trade Organizations. It became the first private carrier in Bangladesh to receive an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) for passenger services in nearly nine years, marking a significant revival in the country's domestic aviation sector since the last such issuance around 2013-2014.[1][12][3] The airline's primary hub is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, with secondary operations conducted from other key domestic airports such as those in Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Saidpur, and Sylhet. Assigned the IATA designator 2A and ICAO code AWA, Air Astra specializes in low-cost scheduled passenger services connecting major domestic destinations, while pursuing expansion into cargo operations and international routes using narrow-body jet aircraft.[8][1][13] As of November 2025, Air Astra maintains a fleet of four ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft and operates more than 14 daily domestic flights, emphasizing affordability with base fares starting around 4,700 Bangladeshi taka for key routes. The carrier's headquarters are located at Siaam Tower, Level 6, Plot 15, Dhaka-Mymensingh Road, Sector 3, Uttara, Dhaka. Plans include growing the fleet to ten ATR 72-600s by the end of 2025 and introducing Airbus A320 or A321 aircraft for broader network development. Air Astra achieved IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification in August 2024, becoming one of the youngest airlines worldwide to do so, with the certification extended until 2027.[5][14][15][16][10][9][17]Ownership and Leadership
Air Astra operates as a brand of Astra Airways Limited, a privately held company incorporated in Bangladesh under the Registrar of Joint-Stock Companies in July 2021.[1] The entity is structured as a domestic private airline, emphasizing Bangladeshi ownership to foster national aviation development and economic contribution.[18][4] Imran Asif serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Accountable Manager of Air Astra, having led the airline since its operational inception in late 2022.[19][3] With a background in aviation management and economics, Asif has overseen the airline's compliance with international standards, including its recognition as an IATA member in 2024.[20] Public information on the board of directors and other key executives remains limited, reflecting the private nature of the company. The leadership structure prioritizes local expertise to align with Bangladesh's aviation growth objectives.[18] Air Astra obtained its initial Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on November 2, 2022, enabling the launch of domestic services.[1][19] Additionally, it secured Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization (CAMO) certification on September 30, 2022, and a Ground Handling Services Provider (GHSP) license on November 2, 2022.[1] The airline's financial structure is privately funded, with ownership concentrated among Bangladeshi stakeholders and no major external investors publicly disclosed as of 2025.[4][21] This model supports independent operations focused on domestic connectivity.[10]Operational History
Founding and Launch
Air Astra, operating as Astra Airways Limited, was incorporated in Bangladesh in July 2021 under the Registrar of Joint-Stock Companies and planned to commence operations as a private domestic airline.[1] The airline was publicly announced in September 2021, with intentions to launch commercial flights in January 2022, targeting all major domestic routes using a fleet of ATR 72-600 aircraft.[22][23] These plans faced significant delays due to regulatory certification processes and global supply chain disruptions exacerbated by the post-COVID-19 aircraft leasing market uncertainties, which hindered timely aircraft deliveries.[24] The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) on November 4, 2021, marking an early regulatory approval, but full air operator's certificate (AOC) issuance was postponed until November 3, 2022.[3][4] With the AOC secured, Air Astra launched its inaugural commercial flight on November 24, 2022, operating from its hub at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Cox's Bazar.[2] Initially, the airline provided three daily flights on the Dhaka–Cox's Bazar route and two daily flights on the Dhaka–Chittagong route, utilizing two leased ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft.[2][25] This marked the first new private airline entry in Bangladesh since 2014, focusing on affordable domestic connectivity.[26]Route Expansion
Following its initial launch in late 2022 with services to Cox's Bazar and Chittagong, Air Astra began expanding its domestic network in early 2023.[27] On 23 February 2023, the airline introduced the Dhaka–Sylhet route with two daily flights, marking its third domestic destination and catering to demand from the northeastern region's business and tourism travelers.[28][29] By mid-2023, frequency on this route had increased to four daily flights to accommodate growing passenger volumes.[30] Operations on the route were temporarily suspended in May 2024 due to an aircraft shortage and resumed on 29 May 2025 with two daily flights.[31] The addition of a third ATR 72-600 aircraft on 18 January 2024 supported further operational growth by enabling higher flight frequencies across the network.[32] Later that year, on 14 May 2023, Air Astra launched the Dhaka–Saidpur route, extending connectivity to the northern region and initially operating daily services.[33] In August 2025, a minor operational incident occurred when Air Astra flight 2A450, an ATR 72-600 bound for Dhaka from Cox's Bazar, rejected takeoff on 2 August due to a wildlife strike involving a dog on the runway; the aircraft sustained no damage, all 72 passengers and crew were unharmed, and the flight departed after a one-hour delay following runway clearance.[34][35] To complement route growth, Air Astra introduced holiday packages bundling return flights, hotel stays, and transfers, alongside promotional fares offering up to 12% discounts on base rates for online bookings, aimed at boosting leisure travel on expanded services.[36][37]Current Operations
Destinations
Air Astra operates an all-domestic network within Bangladesh, centered on its primary hub at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, from which all flights depart and arrive.[38] The airline's routes are short-haul, typically lasting 1 to 2 hours, and feature economy-only seating configurations designed for efficient regional travel.[39] Chattogram, served via Shah Amanat International Airport, receives 5 daily flights from Dhaka as of May 2025, providing essential connectivity for eastern Bangladesh's commercial and industrial activities.[40] Cox’s Bazar Airport is linked with 5 daily flights as of September 2025, catering to high tourist demand along the world's longest natural sea beach, with frequencies adjusted seasonally to accommodate peak travel periods.[41] Saidpur Airport in the north has been connected by 3 daily flights since May 2024, supporting access to the region's agricultural and cultural sites.[42] Sylhet's Osmani International Airport benefits from 2 daily flights as of May 2025, targeting the area's renowned tea estates and religious tourism hubs.[40]Fleet
Air Astra operates a fleet of four ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft as of November 2025, all configured in an all-economy layout with 70 seats each to support high-density operations on domestic routes.[5] The airline's initial two aircraft, registered S2-STB and S2-STC, were delivered in October 2022, enabling the launch of commercial services later that month.[4] A third aircraft, S2-STA, joined the fleet on January 18, 2023, followed by a fourth, S2-AKQ, on November 25, 2024, under a long-term lease arrangement.[32][43] These turboprops, manufactured by ATR, feature modern avionics and fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M engines, optimized for short-haul regional flights within Bangladesh.[44] The airline plans to expand its ATR 72-600 fleet to ten aircraft by the end of 2025, enhancing capacity for expanded domestic connectivity.[1] For future growth, Air Astra issued a request for proposals in April 2025 to secure three to four Airbus A320-200 or A321-200 narrow-body aircraft via dry lease, operating lease, or purchase, targeting international operations with configurations accommodating 150 to 200 passengers in a mix of economy and premium economy classes.[11][10] These additions would mark a shift to jet aircraft, complementing the turboprop fleet's role in initiating and sustaining key domestic routes.[4] Aircraft maintenance is outsourced to certified maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), ensuring compliance with international standards.[45] The fleet has experienced no major incidents affecting operational integrity since inception.[13]| Aircraft Type | In Service | On Order | Configuration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATR 72-600 | 4 | 0 | 70 seats (all-economy) | Domestic operations; deliveries from 2022–2024; plans for 6 additional by end-2025 |
