Family background
Christian Alexander Jojo was born on 11 February 1999 in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, to an English father and a mother of Swedish and Ethiopian heritage.[1] This diverse background endowed him with dual citizenship in Hong Kong and Sweden, reflecting his multicultural upbringing in the city.[1] Jojo's maternal lineage qualifies him for international eligibility with Sweden, and he maintains family connections there that supported his transition during a professional stint in Europe.[3] Despite these ties, his deep-rooted connection to Hong Kong remains strong, as representing the territory carries profound personal and familial significance for him.[4]Youth development
Jojo began his youth football career in Hong Kong with Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC), where he trained and played from an early age until 2017.[1] In 2017, he relocated to Portugal at age 18 to join the youth setup at FC Vizela, a club in the Portuguese second division system.[4] He spent nearly two years there, initially with the U19 team from July 2017 to June 2018, before advancing to the U23 squad from July 2018 to August 2019.[2] This move marked his first international youth experience, providing exposure to European training methods and competition.[5]Club career
Hong Kong beginnings
Jojo began his senior professional career in Hong Kong after spending time in the youth systems of local club HKFC and Portuguese side FC Vizela. On 29 August 2019, at age 20, he signed his first professional contract with Hong Kong Premier League club Happy Valley, transitioning from Vizela's U19 team on a free transfer. During the 2019–20 season with Happy Valley, Jojo primarily featured as a right back or left back, making 16 appearances across league and cup competitions without scoring. His debut came in the Hong Kong Premier League, where he contributed to the team's defensive efforts amid a challenging season affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.[6] On 1 July 2020, Jojo joined Eastern SC on a free transfer following the end of his Happy Valley contract. Over the next three seasons (2020–2023), he became a key squad member, accumulating 75 appearances, 3 goals, and 6 assists in domestic leagues and cups. Notable contributions included defensive solidity in the Hong Kong Premier League and participation in AFC competitions, helping Eastern secure multiple top finishes.[6][7][2] On 28 September 2023, Jojo transferred to Tai Po FC on a free transfer, where he remained until 4 January 2024, making 6 appearances without scoring.[6][2]European stint
After establishing himself in Hong Kong leagues with clubs like Happy Valley, Eastern, and Tai Po, Jojo pursued a senior-level European opportunity, culminating in his signing with IK Oddevold of Sweden's Superettan on December 9, 2023, on a two-year contract effective from January 2024. This move followed standout performances for Hong Kong at the 2023 Asian Games, where he contributed to a semi-final run, and came after four years of persistent efforts to secure an overseas transfer, including a failed summer deal with a Norwegian second-tier side.[3] Jojo viewed the transfer as a chance to elevate his game in a league he believed offered superior exposure compared to Asian competitions, stating, "The exposure in Europe is so much greater… There is no comparison with Hong Kong."[3] At Oddevold, Jojo faced stiff competition for the right-back position amid a squad featuring multiple experienced players, limiting his integration into the first team.[4] Over eight months in the 2024 Superettan season, he made three substitute appearances, totaling limited minutes without recording goals or assists, as the coach prioritized familiarity and tenure. He also played for the U21 side.[8] Reflecting on the challenges, Jojo highlighted a perceived lack of trust from European clubs toward Hong Kong players, noting, "It is extremely difficult for a Hong Kong player [to make it in Europe]. I don’t think there’s a level of trust."[4] He described the Swedish second division's standard as exceeding that of stronger Asian Games opponents, underscoring the professional rigor he encountered.[4] Jojo's time in Sweden concluded with a loan return to Eastern for the 2024–25 Hong Kong Premier League season on August 8, 2024, allowing him to regain match fitness while remaining contracted to Oddevold until the end of 2025. This stint marked his most significant senior European exposure to date, reinforcing his ambition to represent Hong Kong at the highest levels despite the hurdles.[4]Return and mainland China move
Following his stint in Sweden with IK Oddevold, where he made only three substitute appearances in the Superettan over eight months due to intense competition at right-back, Jojo returned to Hong Kong by rejoining Eastern on a season-long loan on 8 August 2024.[4] The move provided Jojo, who had previously played for Eastern from 2020 to 2023, with a familiar platform to regain match fitness and visibility after limited opportunities abroad, as he noted the Swedish league's higher standard compared to Hong Kong but expressed frustration over European clubs' perceived lack of trust in local talents.[4] During the 2024-25 Hong Kong Premier League season, Jojo featured in 20 matches, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists while accumulating 1,477 minutes on the pitch, contributing to Eastern's competitive campaign.[6] The loan deal expired on 30 June 2025, returning Jojo to parent club IK Oddevold, but he did not feature further there.[9] In early July 2025, amid prior interest from mainland Chinese clubs that Jojo had mentioned in interviews as requiring careful evaluation to avoid suboptimal fits, he secured a permanent transfer to Chinese Super League champions Shanghai Port on 17 July 2025.[4][10] The signing, announced officially by the club, positioned the 26-year-old right-back as added depth for the title-defending side, with Shanghai Port highlighting his energy and versatility to bolster their squad for domestic and continental competitions.[11] Since joining Shanghai Port, Jojo has integrated into the first team, appearing in 7 Chinese Super League matches and 4 AFC Champions League Elite matches as of November 2025, logging 91 minutes in league play.[6] This move marked a significant step for the Hong Kong international, transitioning from regional leagues to one of Asia's top competitions and aligning with his ambition for greater exposure after the European experience.[4]International career
Youth international
Jojo represented Hong Kong at the under-23 level, notably as part of the squad for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Selected in the final 22-man roster announced by the Hong Kong Football Association, he featured as a defender in five matches during the tournament.[12][7] Hong Kong's U23 team achieved a historic milestone under coach Jørn Andersen, advancing to the semi-finals for the first time in their Asian Games history. Jojo contributed to key victories, including a 1–0 quarter-final upset against Iran U23, where he started in the lineup alongside teammates like Matt Orr and Li Ngai Hoi. The team finished fourth overall after a 1–0 semi-final loss to South Korea and a 3–0 bronze medal match defeat to Japan.[7][13] His performances at the Games highlighted his versatility as a right-back or left-back, earning praise for defensive solidity in a campaign that saw Hong Kong concede just four goals across six matches. This exposure marked a significant step in Jojo's international progression ahead of his senior debut.[7]Senior international
Jojo made his senior international debut for the Hong Kong national football team on 8 September 2024, entering as a substitute in a 1-1 friendly draw against Fiji.[14] As of November 2025, he has accumulated seven caps for Hong Kong, all as a substitute and without scoring any goals, spanning three appearances in 2024 and four in 2025.[15] These include the 2024 friendlies against Fiji (8 September, 1-1 draw) and Mauritius (19 November, 1-0 win), and the 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship preliminary round against Mongolia (8 December 2024, 3-0 win). In 2025, his appearances were in friendlies against Macau (19 March, result not specified) and Fiji (7 September, result not specified), and 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification matches against Singapore (25 March, result not specified) and Bangladesh (9 October, 4-3 win).[15][16][17][18]Career statistics

He then joined Eastern SC ahead of the 2020–21 season, where he accumulated 10 appearances across league and cup competitions, also without goals. In the 2021–22 season with Eastern SC, limited records show 2 appearances in the Sapling Cup.[19] During the 2022–23 season, still with Eastern SC, Jojo featured in 25 matches across all competitions, scoring 1 goal in the league. He moved on loan to Tai Po FC for the 2023–24 season, appearing in 5 cup matches without scoring. In 2024, Jojo had a brief European stint with IK Oddevold in Sweden's Superettan, playing 3 league matches goalless. Returning to Eastern SC for the 2024–25 season, he made 27 appearances and scored 2 goals, primarily in the league and AFC Champions League Two.[19] In 2025, Jojo transferred to Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, where he has recorded 11 appearances across league and continental competitions without scoring as of November 2025.
