Early life

Birth and early years

Alexandre Azaria was born on 3 September 1967 in Paris, France. Little public information is available regarding his childhood, family background, or education prior to entering the music industry.

Early music career

Entry into music and rock bands

Azaria began his professional music career at the age of 17, taking a position as a junior music art director in advertising. He subsequently joined the French rock band Le Cri de la Mouche as guitarist, contributing to their two albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Azaria later performed his first European tour with the band Niagara, gaining further experience in live rock performances. These early roles in rock bands provided him with foundational skills in guitar playing and band dynamics, paving the way for subsequent opportunities in the music industry.

Collaboration with Indochine

Alexandre Azaria joined the French rock band Indochine in 1996 as a guitarist. His collaboration with the band was brief and primarily centered on their 1996 album Wax. He played electric guitars and acoustic guitars throughout Wax, which was released on November 4, 1996. Azaria co-wrote numerous tracks on the album, including "Unisexe" (with Nicola Sirkis), "Révolution" (with Nicola Sirkis), "Je N'embrasse Pas" (with Nicola Sirkis), "Coma, Coma, Coma" (with Nicola Sirkis), "Echo Ruby" (with Nicola Sirkis and Stéphane Sirkis), "Satellite" (with Stéphane Sirkis), "Kissing My Song" (with Nicola Sirkis), "L'Amoureuse" (with Nicola Sirkis and J. Barry), and "Peter Pan" (with Nicola Sirkis and Stéphane Sirkis). He also served as co-director alongside Indochine on several songs: "Unisexe", "Je N'embrasse Pas", "Coma, Coma, Coma", "Kissing My Song", "L'Amoureuse", and "Peter Pan". His tenure with the band ended in 1997.

Production and remixing work

Alexandre Azaria, during his time under contract with EMI, remixed a rough rock ballad by Noir Désir into a "feline space march" single under the alias Replicant, drawing inspiration from John Barry's scores for James Bond films such as You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever, the latter composer whom Azaria regards as his mentor. The track was released as a single and gained airplay on France's pop-rock radio stations. This exposure brought Azaria to the attention of director Hervé Hadmar. The Noir Désir remix marked a notable point in his early production work outside band collaborations. This led to his first film scoring opportunity with Hadmar's 1999 feature film Comme un poisson hors de l'eau (Like a Fish Out of Water).

Film and television composing career

Debut in film scoring

Alexandre Azaria made his debut in film scoring with the original soundtrack for the 1999 French comedy Comme un poisson hors de l'eau, directed by Hervé Hadmar. He composed the score under the pseudonym Replicant, which he had previously used for his work as a remixer specializing in blending film music elements with songs. This marked his transition from rock music, production, and remixing into composing for cinema. The music from Comme un poisson hors de l'eau attracted the attention of actor-turned-director Vincent Perez, who hired Azaria to score his directorial debut Peau d'Ange (2002). Azaria recalled that Perez initially did not want that particular musical style for his film but found it evoked strong images, leading to the collaboration. This project represented Azaria's first major score under his own name and solidified his entry into French cinema. Throughout the early 2000s, Azaria composed scores for a series of French films, including Fanfan la Tulipe (2003), directed by Gérard Krawczyk, Les Dalton (2004), directed by Philippe Haïm, Astérix et les Vikings (2006), directed by Stefan Fjeldmark and Jesper Møller, and L'Auberge rouge (2007), directed by Gérard Krawczyk. In 2002, he also contributed additional music to The Transporter, directed by Corey Yuen and Louis Leterrier, where he provided a short action sequence at the film's end under Stanley Clarke's main composition, and contributed tracks such as "Transfighter" and "Love Rescue" as Replicant. These early projects established his presence in the industry and paved the way for larger assignments.

The Transporter franchise

Alexandre Azaria contributed music to all four installments of the Transporter franchise, a series of action films produced by EuropaCorp and released between 2002 and 2015. He made his initial contributions to the franchise with the first film, The Transporter (2002), providing two original tracks to the soundtrack under his alias Replicant: "Transfighter" and "Love Rescue." For Transporter 2 (2005), Azaria provided additional music for the film, with a score album released under his name. Azaria served as the composer for Transporter 3 (2008), where he created the original motion picture soundtrack and also wrote the song "Set It on Fire." He returned as composer for The Transporter Refueled (2015), producing the complete original motion picture soundtrack for the film.

Other major film scores

Alexandre Azaria has composed scores for a diverse array of feature films beyond the Transporter series, ranging from French family comedies and light-hearted productions to high-profile international action thrillers. His work reflects versatility across genres and languages, often blending orchestral elements with contemporary sounds suited to both intimate stories and large-scale spectacles. Among his significant French-language credits are the scores for family-oriented and comedic films such as Imogène McCarthery (2010) and Case départ (2011). These projects highlight his contributions to popular French cinema, where he has frequently scored lighthearted narratives aimed at broad audiences. Azaria has also made notable forays into English-language Hollywood and international productions. He composed the music for the science fiction action film Lockout (2012), directed by Luc Besson and starring Guy Pearce. In 2014, he co-composed the score for Brick Mansions, an action thriller remake of the French film District 13, collaborating with Marc Bell. More recently, he provided scores for the comedy Spoiled Brats (2021) and the action thriller Assassin Club (2023). With more than 50 composer credits across feature films, Azaria has established a prolific presence in both French and international cinema, emphasizing dynamic and genre-appropriate music for action, comedy, and family-oriented stories.

Television and recent projects

Azaria has continued to broaden his compositional work beyond feature films, contributing scores to a number of television series in recent years. He composed the music for the 2017 series The Way, which ran for 7 episodes. He later provided the score for the French television series Marianne over 12 episodes from 2022 to 2024. In 2023, Azaria composed for all 6 episodes of the series Cannes Confidential. He also scored the 2022 project Le Petit Nicolas: tous en vacances!, covering 2 episodes. In parallel, Azaria has maintained an active presence in feature film scoring with several recent credits. These include his work on Ducobu 3 (2020), Si on chantait (2021), Abdo and Saneya (2024), and King of My Castle (2024). Azaria has additional projects in development, including composing duties for The Blue Mauritius (currently in pre-production), Certains l'aiment chauve (2025), and The Gardener (2025).
