During 2012, she appeared in the music video for YDEK by Warehouse Republic, then in October 2013, Shaffer said she would be leaving Hollyoaks in the new year in an interview with Digital Spy on 23 November, saying "I've loved my time at Hollyoaks and playing Ruby, but I've just got itchy feet and I want a new, fresh beginning. Obviously we film up in Liverpool and I miss London, my parents, my brother, so I'm ready for a change but I'll be really sad to leave".[7] Shaffer made her on screen exit from Hollyoaks as Ruby on 13 February 2014. In 2014 she appeared in one episode of Glue as "Heather", and, in 2016, played Rachel in two episodes of Class.

As a young actress from a non-traditional background—born in North London to South African parents of mixed-race and Jewish heritage—Shaffer navigated challenges in penetrating the competitive British film industry, where opportunities for diverse newcomers were limited, but her selection for the Harry Potter cast provided a transformative platform.

Soap opera roles

Shaffer joined the cast of the soap opera in 2011, portraying , the rebellious younger sister of established character Duncan Button. Her early storylines centered on Ruby's involvement in a high arc targeting vulnerable teen , where Ruby prioritized popularity over friendship, leading to pranks and social isolation for Esther. Ruby's character also explored vulnerability through her secret illiteracy and a turbulent romance with Jono, culminating in a hasty proposal and wedding plans disrupted by peer interference and Jono's military aspirations. The relationship with Jono evolved into one of Hollyoaks' prominent teen couples, marked by reconciliation after separations and eventual tragedy when Jono perished in a bus crash storyline intertwined with the fallout. Later arcs saw enter a new romance with Ziggy Roscoe, fraught with and , before she turned to purchased from local dealer Trevor Royle, resulting in a severe heart attack that left her unconscious and prompted her initial departure from the village in February 2014. Shaffer reflected on these developments as opportunities to depict Ruby's "bitchy and vulnerable sides," noting the challenge of portraying peer-pressured inaction in the narrative. Shaffer reprised the role in November 2017 for the funeral of matriarch , where stirred conflict amid the village's grief, and again in April 2018 to support a hospitalized during her storyline, marking 's final appearance on April 30. These brief returns highlighted 's enduring ties to her peers despite her time away. Shaffer's three-year tenure as Ruby, following her film debut in the Harry Potter series, offered consistent on-screen visibility in a fast-paced serial format, allowing her to navigate complex emotional arcs from antagonism to redemption. She credited the role with building her versatility, particularly in balancing Ruby's manipulative traits with underlying naivety, though she departed in 2014 seeking a "fresh start" after growing "itchy feet" from the Liverpool-based production and missing her London life. In interviews, Shaffer expressed fondness for her Hollyoaks experience, describing her exit as a "fitting end" on a high note with strong audience engagement.

Shaffer's most prominent television role to date is as Triss Merigold in Netflix's fantasy series , debuting in 2019 and continuing through season 4, which premiered on October 30, 2025. Adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski's book series and inspired by Red's video games, Triss is depicted as a powerful Temerian sorceress known for her , magical prowess, and romantic ties to the protagonist ; the series reimagines her as a compassionate healer and political advisor, with Shaffer's mixed-race background of South African and Jewish descent aligning with her portrayal in this high-fantasy setting. The casting sparked significant backlash from portions of the fanbase, who criticized the deviation from Triss's canonical fair-skinned appearance in the source materials, framing it as unnecessary race-swapping amid broader debates on diversity in fantasy adaptations. Shaffer has addressed such criticisms by emphasizing her personal connection to representation, noting in public statements her pride in portraying a character that reflects mixed-race identities in high-fantasy settings. Across the four seasons, Triss has been integral to key plot developments, including investigating curses and aiding Ciri's protection in season 1, defending the sorceress academy Aretuza from elven invaders in season 2, navigating factional intrigue during the mages' conclave in season 3, and contributing to key developments in mage politics and battles against emerging threats while mentoring young mages in season 4, underscoring her evolution from a secondary ally to a pivotal force in the Continent's power struggles.

In addition to I Am Vengeance, Shaffer contributed to several short films around the same period, including Medusa's Ankles (2018), a BBC adaptation of A.S. Byatt's short story directed by Bonnie Wright, in which she played the receptionist; and Love Pool (2018), written and directed by Asim Chaudhry, where she starred as Maddy in a comedic exploration of modern romance. These projects, often produced by collaborators from her television and Harry Potter circles, allowed Shaffer to experiment with intimate, character-driven narratives that complemented her established TV persona without shifting her career's core emphasis. Beyond cinema, Shaffer appeared in the 2012 for "YDEK (You Don't Ever Know)" by the British band Warehouse Republic, starring as the female lead in a promotional clip directed by Dimitra Giannouka that blended urban pop with elements of uncertainty in relationships. This early media venture, occurring amid her rising profile, served as a low-stakes extension of her on-screen presence, bridging her acting work with the music industry.
