Early life
Family and heritage
Ashley Marie Santos, known professionally as Ash Santos, was born on June 9, 1993, in the Bronx, New York City.[5] Her father, a former Special Victims Unit detective in Manhattan, is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent.[1] Her mother hails from the Dominican Republic.[1] Santos's multicultural heritage, blending Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, has profoundly shaped her personal identity, instilling a strong sense of cultural pride that she openly embraces in her life and work.[6] In interviews, she has described this background as empowering, noting how it allows her to authentically represent her experiences, such as speaking Spanish with her mother, which mirrors her real-life family dynamics and fuels her commitment to cultural visibility.[6]Upbringing and early interests
Ash Santos was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1993, spending her early childhood in the bustling urban environment of the city before her family relocated to the quieter small town of Montgomery, New York.[7][5] There, she was raised, supported by her father's career as a former Special Victims Unit detective in Manhattan.[1] This move upstate exposed her to a more rural setting.[1] During her adolescence in Montgomery, Santos discovered a fascination with acting through local opportunities, including a theatre summer camp at age eight where she first performed and eagerly begged her mother to enroll her.[8] This experience ignited her interest in the performing arts as a means to explore and convey the diverse stories and lives she observed in her surroundings, drawing from the cultural narratives present in her family environment.[3] Her early hobbies also included sports, which she pursued alongside her schooling, balancing physical activities with budding creative inclinations before any formal professional pursuits.[6] In the fall of 2011, at age 18, Santos's family relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, a significant shift that marked the end of her New York youth and introduced her to a new cultural landscape during a pivotal transitional period.[1][9]Career
Early career
In the fall of 2011, Ash Santos relocated from New York to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she began pursuing acting professionally in a smaller regional market.[10] This move marked her entry into the entertainment industry, allowing her to secure initial opportunities in commercials and television movies, which served as foundational building blocks for her skills.[10] Over the next several years, from 2011 to 2018, Santos navigated the challenges of a limited local scene by attending auditions and taking on minor roles in independent films, short films, and industrials, including her debut feature Once I Was a Beehive (2015).[1] These experiences, often in low-budget productions, helped her develop versatility and resilience while accumulating credits in a competitive yet supportive environment that emphasized practical on-set learning over high-profile exposure.[11] The smaller scale of Utah's film industry meant fewer resources and opportunities compared to major hubs, but it provided essential hands-on training that refined her craft through consistent, albeit modest, work.[12] The smaller scale of Utah's film industry meant fewer resources and opportunities compared to major hubs, but it provided essential hands-on training that refined her craft through consistent, albeit modest, work.[5] Recognizing the need for greater visibility, Santos made a pivotal relocation to Los Angeles in April 2018, transitioning from regional gigs to the broader Hollywood landscape.[10] This shift positioned her for national auditions and expanded her professional network, building directly on the groundwork laid in Utah.[13]Breakthrough role
Ash Santos was cast as Emily Campbell, a recurring guest star, in the eighth season of the FX horror anthology series American Horror Story: Apocalypse, which premiered in 2018.[14] The role marked her first major Hollywood appearance, secured just two months after she signed with her representatives, building on her prior experience in smaller television spots that honed her audition skills.[8] As Emily, Santos portrayed a young survivor selected for her superior genetics to join the elite residents of Outpost 3, a luxurious underground bunker shielding a select few from a nuclear apocalypse. Her character navigates the oppressive bunker dynamics, forming a pivotal romantic relationship amid escalating horrors, while embodying themes of eugenics, class privilege, and human resilience in a dystopian society divided by survival hierarchies.[15][16] Santos's performance as Emily was praised for its emotional depth, capturing the character's vulnerability and growing defiance against the bunker's authoritarian regime, which amplified the season's blend of psychological horror and interpersonal drama.[17] Behind the scenes, she described her debut day on set as intimidating yet transformative, sharing her first scene with powerhouse co-stars Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates, whose commanding presence elevated the ensemble's intensity and served as an impromptu masterclass in acting.[8] Series creator Ryan Murphy's meticulous oversight—from actors' hairstyles to wardrobe choices—further immersed Santos in the production's high-stakes environment, despite his simultaneous management of multiple projects.[8] The airing of Apocalypse provided an immediate career catalyst for Santos, thrusting her into wider industry visibility as one of the season's notable newcomers and sparking heightened interest from agents and casting directors.[3] Media coverage highlighted her as a fresh face in the anthology's star-studded lineup, contributing to a surge in recognition that positioned the role as the foundation of her rising profile in horror and drama genres.[11]Subsequent work
Following her breakthrough in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, Santos transitioned to more prominent television roles, notably recurring as Coco, a resilient community member navigating the tensions of a prison town, in Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount+ starting in 2021 and continuing through multiple seasons.[18] This role marked her entry into serialized drama, showcasing her ability to portray layered supporting characters in ensemble casts led by Jeremy Renner and Dianne Wiest. Santos expanded into film with a diverse slate of projects in 2021, including the drama Joe Bell, where she appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg in a story of grief and advocacy inspired by real events, the Netflix vampire thriller Night Teeth that blended horror and urban fantasy, and the indie film Swing (also released as Heart of Champions), a drama about a college rowing team.[19] Her recent film work culminated in the 2024 Netflix comedy Our Little Secret, in which she played Sophie, a sharp-witted family member entangled in holiday chaos, sharing the screen with high-profile talents like Mark Wahlberg and Lindsay Lohan. These roles highlighted her genre versatility, from emotional dramas to supernatural thrillers and lighthearted ensemble pieces. Santos has appeared in the Netflix limited series True Story (2021), where she collaborated with Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes in a crime-thriller narrative, and the Netflix medical drama series Pulse (2025), in which she portrays series regular Nia Washington, a dedicated EMT facing high-stakes emergencies that premiered on April 3, 2025.[20][21] Additional ventures include a guest role as Kiki in the Hulu miniseries Mike (2022), a biopic about boxer Mike Tyson, and her casting as series regular Andrea, a U.S. Marshal, in the Paramount+ spin-off Y: Marshals (2026).[22] Through these collaborations with acclaimed actors like Hart and Sarandon in earlier pilots, Santos has solidified her presence in both streaming blockbusters and character-driven stories, emphasizing themes of resilience and human connection up to 2025.[23]Filmography
