Early life
Catherine Cohen was born on August 11, 1991, in New York City.[1][10] Her family relocated to Houston, Texas, shortly after her birth, where she was raised.[11] Cohen is the daughter of a Catholic mother and an Ashkenazi Jewish father, who met while attending her future alma mater, Princeton University.[3][2] Growing up in a household where humor was encouraged, her parents fostered an environment of laughter and playful antics, with both exhibiting a strong sense of wit themselves.[2] She has a younger brother, Billy Cohen, who is also an actor.[3] During her childhood in Houston, Cohen attended Christian schools and participated in youth group activities, including Bible study and sleepaway camps, which later influenced elements of her comedic material.[2] From a young age, around four or five, she displayed a natural inclination toward performance, entertaining family and friends by doing accents and imitating television commercials.[2] By third grade, she discovered her singing talent during a school musical, performing a solo that highlighted her affinity for the spotlight.[2] As a middle schooler, Cohen and her friends engaged in mischievous activities like creating imaginary characters, taping mock performances, and making prank calls, often getting into trouble for their boisterous laughter and disruptive humor at school.[2] These early experiences in Houston, surrounded by musical theater influences and a supportive family dynamic, nurtured her interests in performance and comedy, shaping her self-described "terror" persona as a child who thrived on attention.[2][3]Education
Cohen attended Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas, where she graduated with highest honors in 2009 and actively participated in musical theater productions, performing in five shows each year.[12] She then enrolled at Princeton University, following in the footsteps of her father, and majored in English while earning a certificate in theater. Cohen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 2013. During her time at Princeton, she immersed herself in the performing arts, including taking a lead role in a concert staging of the musical Kiss Me, Kate, singing in the co-ed a cappella group Shere Khan, and delivering the Class Day speech.[2][13] These experiences in theater and literature at Princeton shaped Cohen's creative foundation, blending performance with writing skills that would later inform her comedic style. After graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy, enrolling in classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.[14]Personal life
Catherine Cohen has been in a long-term relationship with actor Brian Muller since 2019.[15] The couple met through mutual friends, and their relationship developed around the time of filming the 2021 romantic comedy Dating & New York, in which they played supporting characters whose on-screen dynamic mirrored their real-life connection.[16] As of December 2022, Cohen described their partnership as a source of stability amid her evolving personal reflections on adulthood and settling down.[17] Cohen resides in New York City, having made the city her home as an adult after moving there post-college.[18] She and Muller live in the West Village neighborhood.[15]Career
Comedy
After graduating from Princeton University in 2013, Catherine Cohen moved to New York City, where she initially pursued acting before transitioning to comedy. She took classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and began performing sketch and stand-up at various venues, including early open-mic nights that helped hone her self-deprecating, confessional style focused on dating, femininity, and millennial anxieties.[2][14] By 2017, Cohen had established residencies that showcased her cabaret-infused stand-up, blending sharp monologues with theatrical flair. She hosted a monthly show at Joe's Pub, a renowned cabaret space, and launched her weekly "Cabernet Cabaret" at Club Cumming in the East Village, drawing crowds with its mix of storytelling, audience interaction, and glamorous absurdity. In 2018, she co-launched the podcast Seek Treatment with Pat Regan, a playful series dissecting relationships and pop culture that premiered on July 24 and quickly gained a dedicated following for its witty banter. That same year, Cohen earned early recognition as one of Time Out New York's five NYC comedians to watch, highlighting her rising presence in the city's comedy scene.[14][19][20] Cohen's breakthrough came in 2019 with her Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut in The Twist...? She's Gorgeous, a one-woman show that earned her the Best Newcomer Award for its bold, vulnerable exploration of love and self-image through stand-up and song. She also received a nomination in the Comedy category at the 11th Annual Shorty Awards that year, acknowledging her social media-savvy humor. Building on this momentum, Cohen released her first hour-long special, The Twist...? She's Gorgeous, on Netflix in March 2022, filmed live at Joe's Pub and praised for capturing the essence of post-pandemic introspection. Her second special, Come For Me, premiered on Veeps on October 17, 2024, delving into womanhood in one's thirties with a horny, glamorous lens. In August 2025, she returned to the Edinburgh Fringe with Broad Strokes, a critically acclaimed show recounting her 2023 mini-stroke through irreverent stand-up. Cohen continues her weekly performances at Club Cumming, with scheduled shows on November 19 and 26, 2025, maintaining her status as a staple in New York's cabaret-comedy circuit.[6][21][22][8][23][24]Music
Catherine Cohen's musical career emerged in the mid-2010s through her innovative fusion of stand-up comedy and original songs in live cabaret performances, establishing her as a prominent figure in New York City's nightlife scene.[25] She began hosting and performing at weekly events like Cabernet Cabaret at Club Cumming starting around 2018, where she blended humorous anecdotes with musical numbers accompanied by piano.[26] These shows quickly gained a cult following for their glamorous, interactive format, often featuring Cohen in elaborate outfits while delivering songs that punctuated her comedic narratives.[27] Cohen has frequently incorporated her original compositions into performances at renowned venues such as Joe's Pub, where she has held residencies and special shows since at least 2023. For instance, her 2023 run of Come for Me at Joe's Pub showcased a mix of confessional storytelling and musical interludes, drawing on her experiences in love and self-image.[28] In 2025, she continued this tradition with events like Work in Progress and A Very Kitty Cat Christmas, further highlighting her ability to weave song into live entertainment.[29] Her style as a singer-songwriter is characterized by tragicomic, self-deprecating lyrics that explore themes of modern urban life, heartbreak, and millennial anxieties, often delivered with theatrical flair reminiscent of classic cabaret artists but updated for contemporary audiences.[30][31] In 2024, Cohen announced her debut studio album, Overdressed, released on November 15 via Elektra Records, marking a significant milestone in her transition from live performer to recording artist.[32] The album, recorded in London over nine days, features 10 original tracks that extend her signature blend of humor and vulnerability, focusing on the absurdities of single life and holiday pressures.[33] This release was preceded by music videos for singles like "Plus One," which exemplify her witty, introspective songwriting.[34] Cohen's live music engagements remain a cornerstone of her career, with ongoing series such as Cabernet Cabaret continuing into 2025, including multiple dates in June at Club Cumming that promise fresh musical material and guest collaborations.[35] These performances underscore her enduring commitment to cabaret as a dynamic platform for her evolving musical output.[26]Writing
Catherine Cohen's debut poetry collection, God I Feel Modern Tonight: Poems from a Gal About Town, was published by Alfred A. Knopf on February 2, 2021.[36] The book features tragicomic verses that delve into themes of heartbreak, sex, self-care, self-critique, urban adventures, and millennial narcissism, often reflecting the anxieties of contemporary life through a lens of personal introspection.[37][38] Critics praised the collection for its discomfiting and self-deprecating style, which captures relatable millennial experiences with sharp, humorous wit.[38][39] Excerpts from the book appeared in Vulture in February 2021, highlighting Cohen's ability to blend everyday mundanities with poignant self-reflection.[39] This publication solidifies Cohen's identity as a poet-comedian, extending her performative humor into written form while maintaining a voice that resonates with themes of vulnerability and irony central to her broader artistic persona.[38][39]Filmography

She debuted on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2019, singing her original song "Look at Me," and followed with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2020, showcasing her cabaret-style humor.[50] These spots highlighted her blend of song and satire, drawing from her live comedy persona.Discography
