Early life
Chaneil Kular was born on 20 August 1999 in Birmingham, West Midlands, England.[7][1] Of Indian descent, Kular grew up in the multicultural environment of Birmingham.[8] He later transitioned to formal education at King Edward's School in Birmingham.[9]Education
Kular attended King Edward's School in Birmingham for his secondary education, graduating in 2017.[10] He later enrolled at the University of Bristol to study theatre and film. Kular has reflected that he did not take the degree particularly seriously, experiencing multiple interactions with the university's academic office as a result, though the program allowed him to explore the performing arts more formally.[11] This academic pursuit built on his early self-taught interest in acting, which began around age 13 when he researched career paths online, providing structured coursework and exposure that contributed to his development as a performer.[12]Acting career
Early roles
Kular made his professional acting debut in 2018 with a recurring role as Tariq Amiri in the BBC daytime medical soap opera Doctors.[13] He portrayed the character across 12 episodes, depicting Tariq as a patient and romantic interest for established nurse Ayesha Sara, marking his first substantial television exposure following his studies in theatre and film at the University of Bristol.[14][11] Later that year, Kular appeared in a guest role as a pizza delivery boy in the BBC thriller series Informer, produced by Neal Street Productions in association with Amazon Prime Video and directed by Jonny Campbell.[13] This minor but noticeable part in a single episode contributed to his early buildup of on-screen experience in high-profile British television.[15] These initial roles served as foundational steps in Kular's career, allowing him to hone his craft in ensemble casts before pursuing more prominent opportunities.[14]Breakthrough and Sex Education
Kular was cast as Anwar Bakshi, a recurring character in the Netflix series Sex Education, appearing across its first three seasons from 2019 to 2021.[16] Anwar, a confident gay student of South Asian heritage, serves as a key member of the school's elite "Untouchables" clique, which includes queer students navigating themes of identity, relationships, and sexuality.[17] His character's arc highlights open self-expression amid peer dynamics, contributing to the series' exploration of diverse adolescent experiences.[16] In interviews following the show's run, Kular has shared behind-the-scenes insights, emphasizing the role's significance in mainstream representation. He noted that portraying an openly gay South Asian character addressed ongoing taboos, stating, "A gay South Asian role can still be a taboo topic, and having that in such a mainstream show and him not being closeted and being openly gay... that was really important."[17] Kular departed the series ahead of its fourth and final season in 2023, reflecting on the decision as timely for his career evolution: "It feels nice that it's ended because it's allowed me to show who Chaneil Kular is. It feels like the right time."[16] The role marked a pivotal point in Kular's professional growth, elevating his visibility within the industry and resonating with audiences through its authentic depiction of cultural and sexual identity. Kular has credited the experience with broadening his opportunities, as it connected personally to his own South Asian background while fostering greater recognition for diverse narratives in British television.[17]Recent and upcoming projects
In 2020, Kular portrayed Dilip Rai, the inquisitive nephew of the local general and son of the late Princess Srimati, in the FX and BBC miniseries Black Narcissus, a three-part adaptation of Rumer Godden's 1939 novel about Anglican nuns establishing a school in the remote Himalayas, where tensions arise from isolation, desire, and cultural clashes.[2][18] His performance contributed to the series' exploration of colonial-era dynamics and psychological strain, earning praise for adding youthful curiosity to the ensemble led by Gemma Arterton.[18] Kular's visibility from Sex Education paved the way for his first major film lead in the 2023 Netflix thriller Accused, directed by Philip Barantini, where he played Harri Bhavsar, a British-Indian man whose life unravels after being falsely accused of terrorism amid a wave of online vigilantism and mob justice.[19] The film delves into themes of digital misinformation, racial profiling, and personal resilience, with Kular highlighting the role's demands in embodying a character's rapid descent from normalcy to paranoia.[20] In 2025, Kular starred as Indra, an immigrant food delivery rider grappling with London's gig economy and his past on his birthday, in the short film Rider, directed by Edward Whelan and released on Omeleto in August after premiering at festivals like Aesthetica.[21] This project marked his emergence as a producer, co-producing alongside Kelly Wong to bring a grounded story of immigrant struggles and urban isolation to screen.[22][23] As of November 2025, Kular is set to appear as Tej in the Paramount+ series The Revenge Club, a six-part darkly comic drama based on JD Pennington's novel The Othello Club, following a divorce support group—led by Martin Compston's Calum and Aimee-Ffion Edwards' Emily—that evolves into a revenge alliance against toxic exes.[24] Produced by Gaumont Television UK, the series has completed production and is scheduled to premiere on December 12, 2025, with first-look images released earlier that month showcasing the ensemble's dynamic.[24][25]Filmography
