Dan Filip Stulbach (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈdɐ̃ (i)sˈtuwbak(i)]; born September 26, 1969) is a Brazilian actor, television presenter, director, and artistic director.

Key Information

Biography

[edit]

He is the first member of his Polish Jewish immigrant family to be born in Brazil.[1] He has only one sister, who is a nutritionist and mother of his only nephew. At home, he grew up listening to the Polish language and stories from his grandfather about life in Poland, which was devastated during World War II.

After graduating from Colégio Rio Branco, he was undecided about his career path. He took college entrance exams and was admitted to programs in Medicine, Administration, and Engineering. However, he studied Engineering for a year before graduating in Social Communication from the School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM). He also attended the School of Dramatic Art at USP. At ESPM, he created the theater group Tangerina, which still exists today. For eight years he directed group shows, which won several amateur theater festivals.

He lived in San Diego, California for almost a year. There he studied English and worked as a movie ticket holder. With the money he earned, he spent a season in New York City, where he could watch dozens of plays.

Stulbach is often touted as being similar to American actor Tom Hanks, having even been satirized as such by the group of comedians Casseta & Planeta.

Early life and education

Family background and childhood

Education and early acting

Dan Stulbach graduated from Colégio Rio Branco in São Paulo. After completing high school, he passed entrance exams and was accepted into university programs in Medicine, Administration, and Engineering, though he pursued only one year of Engineering studies before changing paths. He went on to graduate in Social Communication from the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM). During his time at ESPM, he created and directed the amateur theater group Tangerina for eight years, leading it to victories in several amateur theater festivals. Stulbach also attended the Escola de Arte Dramática (EAD) at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he further developed his interest in acting. He spent nearly one year living in San Diego, California, studying English and working as a ticket clerk and popcorn seller at a movie theater; he used his earnings from that job to travel to New York and attend numerous theater productions. This early involvement with Tangerina helped open doors to his professional acting career.

Theater career

Amateur and early professional theater

Dan Stulbach began his involvement with acting through amateur theater during his high school years at Colégio Rio Branco, where he participated in school productions and took on his first role in an adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This early exposure to the stage fostered his passion for performance and marked the starting point of his artistic journey. His professional debut came in 1990, when he portrayed the title role in Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, directed by Roberto Lage at São Paulo's Teatro Sérgio Cardoso. The production represented his transition from amateur to professional theater and provided initial recognition in the Brazilian stage scene. In his early professional years, Stulbach collaborated with distinguished figures in Brazilian theater such as Paulo Autran, Elias Andreato, Marco Nanini, and Naum Alves de Souza, building experience through work alongside these established artists. These collaborations contributed to his development as an actor and complemented the foundation that later supported his breakthrough in television.

Notable stage roles and directing work

Dan Stulbach has distinguished himself in Brazilian theater with a range of challenging and critically praised roles across major productions, alongside notable directing and artistic leadership work. His portrayal of Ross Gardiner in Visitando o Sr. Green from 2000 to 2005 marked an extended success, including collaborations with Paulo Autran and tours that contributed to the play's status as one of the most enduring hits in Brazilian theater history. In 2002–2003, he played Clausewitz in Novas Diretrizes em Tempos de Paz by Bosco Brasil, a performance that earned him the Prêmio Shell de Teatro for Best Actor in 2002, along with the Troféu APCA for Best Actor in a Play. His role in that production was later adapted into the film Tempos de Paz. He followed with the role of Father Flynn in the 2006 Brazilian production of Dúvida, directed by Bruno Barreto. From 2010 to 2011, Stulbach starred as Richard Hannay in Os 39 Degraus, alongside Danton Mello and under the direction of Alexandre Reinecke. He portrayed God in Meu Deus! from 2014 to 2015, sharing the stage with Irene Ravache and directed by Elias Andreato. His long-running role as the Madman in Morte Acidental de Um Anarquista spanned 2015 to 2019, with multiple seasons in São Paulo, tours across more than 22 cities, and re-premieres highlighting its commercial and critical success. In addition to acting, Stulbach directed A Toca do Coelho from 2013 to 2015. Since 2007, he has served as artistic director of the Teatro Eva Herz at Livraria Cultura in São Paulo's Conjunto Nacional, where he has curated programming featuring significant national artists and productions.

Television career

Debut and early appearances

Dan Stulbach made his television debut in 1996 with a minor participation in the Rede Globo telenovela O Rei do Gado, where he appeared in small roles as a reporter and copilot. The following year, he took on his first full telenovela role as Horácio in O Amor Está no Ar, marking his initial involvement in a complete series storyline. In 2001, Stulbach appeared in the miniseries Os Maias, playing the character Craft in this adaptation of Eça de Queirós's work. He continued with another supporting role in 2002 as André in the telenovela Esperança. These early television appearances consisted primarily of guest or supporting parts that helped establish his presence on Brazilian television before his more prominent roles in subsequent years.

Breakthrough and major telenovelas

Dan Stulbach achieved his breakthrough with his portrayal of the antagonist Marcos Soares Mendonça in the telenovela Mulheres Apaixonadas (2003), where he played a possessive and violent husband who repeatedly physically abused his wife Raquel (Helena Ranaldi), including in a widely remembered scene involving a tennis racket. The storyline realistically depicted the cycle of domestic violence, the victim's fear, and the importance of denunciation, sparking intense national debate on the issue and highlighting how mild penalties often failed victims at the time. The role established Stulbach as a revelation in television, earning multiple acting awards. The character's impact extended beyond the screen, contributing to increased public awareness that helped pave the way for the Lei Maria da Penha, with reports of domestic violence rising more than 40% at a Rio de Janeiro women's police station after key denunciation scenes aired. Stulbach faced significant public backlash for the part, receiving piles of hate mail and requiring personal security from Rede Globo in the production's final stages as viewers reacted strongly on the streets. In August 2003, he and co-star Helena Ranaldi met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who referenced the novela to condemn real-life domestic violence as more brutal than the fictional racket attacks and called for unity against abusers. Stulbach followed this success with prominent roles in several major Rede Globo telenovelas and miniseries, including Edgard Legrand in Senhora do Destino (2004), Zinque in JK (2006), Leandro in Amazônia, de Galvez a Chico Mendes (2007), the lead Leonardo "Léo" Rosemberg in the miniseries Queridos Amigos (2008), Ricardo Silva in Som & Fúria (2009), Paulo Siqueira in Fina Estampa (2011), Eugênio Garcia in A Força do Querer (2017), Eurico Malta Rocha in O Sétimo Guardião (2018), and a special appearance as Ibraim Chaguri in Pantanal (2022).

Later television roles and hosting

In the mid-2010s, Dan Stulbach expanded his television career beyond acting by taking on prominent hosting roles across various networks. In 2015, he replaced Marcelo Tas as the main presenter of the satirical news program Custe o Que Custar (CQC) on Rede Bandeirantes. That same year, he began hosting Bola da Vez, a sports interview program on ESPN Brasil featuring conversations with athletes and personalities, debuting in May 2015 and continuing until early 2017 when he departed to focus on acting commitments. Stulbach's hosting ventures continued with Cine Rooftop, the first Brazilian original production on Paramount Channel Brasil, where he served as one of the rotating presenters alongside Maria Fernanda Cândido and André Frateschi starting in October 2016 to discuss cinema with guests. In 2017, he presented the documentary series Era Uma Vez Uma História on Band, exploring Brazilian historical periods alongside historians and guests. Concurrently, Stulbach maintained his acting presence in television with select roles. He portrayed Paulo Hélio Garcez in the 2014 comedy series Segunda Dama. In 2015, he appeared as Luiz in the miniseries Os Experientes. Later, in 2021, he played Paulo Pereira Garcia in Carcereiros and the psychologist Kléber Caldas in the Globoplay series Filhas de Eva, a character navigating midlife reinvention amid personal and professional upheaval. These hosting opportunities complemented his acting reputation by showcasing his versatility across journalistic, sports, cultural, and documentary formats.

He next appeared as Rodrigo in the romantic drama Mais Uma Vez Amor (2005). A standout performance came in Tempos de Paz (2009), where he portrayed the Polish immigrant Clausewitz in a screen adaptation of his earlier theater role. The film received widespread recognition, leading nominations in multiple categories at the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro, including Best Actor for Stulbach, and he won the Best Actor Jury Award at the Prêmio Contigo Cinema in 2010. He subsequently played Marcos in A Suprema Felicidade (2010) and a character named Marcos in Meu Amigo Hindu (2015). In 2016, he starred as Julio César in O Vendedor de Sonhos. His more recent cinema work includes Miro in Vou Nadar Até Você (2020), Messias in Coisa Pública (2022), and Baby Bocaiúva in Ainda Estou Aqui (2024), directed by Walter Salles and depicting the effects of the Brazilian military dictatorship on a family. The film has earned strong critical acclaim, including a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was selected as Brazil's official submission for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards (2025). Stulbach is scheduled to appear as Philip Murdoch in the upcoming Fé para o Impossível (2025).

This role draws on his theater background to curate and oversee the venue's cultural programming.

Personal life

Public image and personal details

Dan Stulbach is frequently referred to as the "Brazilian Tom Hanks" due to his notable facial resemblance to the American actor. This comparison has been a recurring element of his public image, particularly highlighted in media and comedy sketches where he has even portrayed Hanks. Stulbach stands at 1.86 meters tall, as noted in various profiles and interviews. He has a partner, Heloísa (a documentarist and journalist), with whom he has been in a relationship since around 2008, and two children; he has expressed a preference for keeping his family life private. His Polish Jewish heritage is emphasized in public profiles and discussions, with his parents having been Jewish immigrants from Poland who arrived in Brazil after World War II, making him the first in his family born in the country. His father, Jozef Aleksander Stulbach, died in 2021. He has spoken about this background in interviews, particularly noting how his Jewish ancestry and family history of surviving the war and antisemitism inform his approach to roles exploring those themes.

Awards and recognition

Major awards and nominations

Dan Stulbach has received significant recognition for his work in theater, television, and film, particularly in Brazil's major award circuits such as the Prêmio Shell, Troféu APCA, Prêmio Contigo!, and others. In 2002, he earned acclaim in theater for his performance in Novas Diretrizes em Tempos de Paz, winning the Prêmio Shell for Best Actor as part of the production's multiple honors, including for authorship and lighting. He also received the Troféu APCA for Best Actor in a theatrical production for the same play. His breakthrough television role in Mulheres Apaixonadas (2003) brought widespread awards in 2003 and 2004, including wins for Most Promising Actor at Melhores do Ano, Best Newcomer at Prêmio Extra and Prêmio Contigo!, Best Supporting Actor at Prêmio Qualidade Brazil (both Rio and São Paulo editions), and Best Actor at Troféu Imprensa and Troféu APCA. He has also received nominations in later years, such as for Best Actor in a Series/Miniseries at Prêmio Contigo! in 2015 for Segunda Dama and for Best Presenter at Prêmio APCA in 2015 for his hosting on CQC.

Impact and legacy

Dan Stulbach's portrayal of Félix in the 2003 telenovela Mulheres Apaixonadas sparked widespread public debate on domestic violence in Brazil, drawing attention to patterns of abuse within relationships. The storyline, featuring Félix's repeated aggression against the character Sílvia and her eventual decision to file a police report, resulted in a more than 40% increase in domestic violence denunciations at the Delegacia Especial de Atendimento à Mulher in downtown Rio de Janeiro following key scenes. Stulbach has reflected on the role's broader significance, noting that the novela "colaborou muito nessa discussão" and contributed to the creation of the Lei Maria da Penha in 2006, while emphasizing that "ainda temos muito a evoluir" in combating violence against women. Known for his versatility as an actor, presenter, and director, Stulbach has built a multifaceted career across television, film, theater, and media. Since 2007, he has served as artistic director of the Teatro Eva Herz in São Paulo, shaping programming at one of the city's key cultural venues and sustaining influence in Brazilian theater. He is often compared to Tom Hanks due to similarities in appearance and range as a performer, a parallel he has acknowledged lightheartedly in interviews. His awards reflect peaks in his career, yet his legacy endures through performances that provoke social reflection and his continued contributions to the arts and media in Brazil.
