Daniel Nielsen is a Danish-American composer and musician known for his orchestral scoring and trailer music contributions to major Hollywood films, television series, and advertising campaigns. He is particularly noted for his role in co-arranging the widely licensed trailer theme "Requiem for a Tower"—a re-orchestrated version of Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna"—for the 2002 theatrical trailer of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. His work has appeared in trailers for prominent franchises including Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Planet of the Apes, Iron Man, and The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as in music for over 350 television series and more than 2,400 episodes of original programming worldwide. Born in California, Nielsen began his professional career as a teenage jazz pianist, performing with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, Louie Bellson, and Albert “Tootie” Heath. He later served as an arranger for ensembles including the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis and the Mingus Big Band. Nielsen earned a Master of Fine Arts in music composition from the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied with notable figures including Pulitzer Prize winner Mel Powell and Mort Subotnick. He worked as a staff composer, orchestrator, and musician at Walt Disney Studios on more than 40 film and television projects, receiving mentorship from veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith. Nielsen also spent time as an in-house composer for the Los Angeles trailer company The Ant Farm, where he scored hundreds of feature film trailers and contributed to the modern epic trailer aesthetic. Earlier in his career, he contributed as a musical archivist for the Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress, preserving jazz collections related to Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. With over 30 years of experience in orchestral and multimedia composition, he blends contemporary classical elements with electronics and has composed for film, television, concert music, modern dance, theatrical productions, and sound installations. He relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark, in recent years and continues his international scoring work.
