De Toppers (Dutch pronunciation: [də ˈtɔpərs]), also known internationally as The Toppers, is a Dutch supergroup, consisting of René Froger, Gerard Joling, Jeroen van der Boom and Jan Smit. Gordon Heuckeroth, one of the founding members, left the group in 2011. The group has performed a series of concerts every year since 2005 in the Johan Cruyff Arena. Their repertoire consists mainly of a mix of covers and original material. Toppers in Concert, with more than 40 sold-out shows, is the longest running concert series in the Benelux. In 2008, the Toppers were selected to represent the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 held in Moscow, Russia, with the song "Shine".[1] They failed to qualify for the final.
Key Information
History
[edit]
Gerard Joling and Gordon Heuckeroth formed as a guest band in a Rene Froger concert, which turned into a successful concert series. In 2005, the first two concerts were held at the Johan Cruyff Arena. In 2008, Joling left the Toppers and was replaced by Jeroen van der Boom. In 2010, Joling re-joined the group. They performed as a quartet before Heuckeroth departed in 2011.
In September 2016, Jan Smit stated he was interested in joining the group. A few hours later, van der Boom posted a video on Facebook[2] of himself and Joling "auditioning" to join the band. Smit's addition was formally announced on February 21, 2017.[3]
In 2017, the Toppers received a Special Achievement Award, selling more than 1.5 million copies of Toppers in Concert (CD + DVD). During the 2018 edition, they broke the world record in Canon Singing with 198.000 spectators during three concerts.[citation needed]

Formation and early years
De Toppers originated in 2005 as a supergroup comprising the Dutch singers René Froger, Gerard Joling, and Gordon Heuckeroth, who had previously built successful solo careers in pop and schlager music. The concept emerged from a 2004 collaboration when Joling and Heuckeroth joined Froger as guest performers during his series of concerts at the Amsterdam Arena, sparking the idea for a joint act that would blend their hits into high-energy medleys.[3] The group's inaugural performances occurred on May 13 and 14, 2005, at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, launching what would become their signature stadium concert format with elaborate staging, costumes, and guest appearances. These sold-out shows drew over 100,000 attendees across the two nights, establishing De Toppers as a major live entertainment phenomenon in the Netherlands.[1] Building on this momentum, De Toppers quickly rose in popularity through subsequent joint appearances on television and radio, where their charismatic chemistry and nostalgic repertoire resonated with a broad audience. The 2005 concerts were captured for their debut live album, Toppers in Concert 2005, released later that year.[1]Line-up changes and key events
In 2011, founding member Gordon Heuckeroth announced his departure from De Toppers following the group's concert series that year, citing a desire to focus on his solo career and personal projects.[4] This move reduced the lineup to a trio consisting of René Froger, Gerard Joling, and Jeroen van der Boom, marking a shift toward a more stable core dynamic after previous fluctuations. Heuckeroth had previously left temporarily in 2009 amid reported tensions but rejoined shortly thereafter.[5] Jeroen van der Boom, who had joined as a temporary replacement for Joling in 2008 and participated in the group's Eurovision effort, became a permanent fixture by 2012, helping to solidify the trio's chemistry and sustain the annual concert tradition.[6] In 2018, Jan Smit became a full-time member, expanding the group to a quartet. This configuration propelled De Toppers through a series of successful shows, culminating in their 15-year milestone in 2019. A notable highlight came in 2018 during the "Pretty in Pink" edition of Toppers in Concert at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, where the group and audience set a world record for canon singing, involving 198,000 participants across three nights.[7] The event, led by guest performer Danny de Munk, shattered the previous record of 4,000 participants and underscored the interactive appeal of their live performances. De Toppers expanded their seasonal offerings with the introduction of Christmas-themed concerts in 2016, marking their first holiday edition at Rotterdam Ahoy to celebrate the group's 12.5-year anniversary.[8] These "Christmas Party of the Year" shows, featuring festive medleys and guest artists like O'G3NE and Lee Towers, became an annual tradition, drawing dedicated crowds for sing-along spectacles in a winter wonderland setting.[9] By 2014, during the tenth edition of Toppers in Concert, the group welcomed their two millionth concert visitor, a milestone that highlighted their enduring popularity and record-breaking attendance in the Benelux region.[10] Cumulative figures reached over 2.6 million visitors by 2019, earning recognition for the longest-running concert series in the area with consistent sell-outs. Additional key events included charity-linked performances, such as contributions to Orange Baby initiatives through special recordings and shows.[11]Eurovision Song Contest participation
On September 19, 2008, the Dutch public broadcaster NOS internally selected De Toppers to represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, opting for an internal choice rather than a full national final for the artist selection.[12] The group's lineup at the time consisted of the trio Gordon Heuckeroth, René Froger, and Jeroen van der Boom, following a lineup change earlier that year.[2] To determine their entry song, De Toppers competed in the Nationaal Songfestival 2009 on February 1, 2009, performing six tracks selected from over 300 submissions.[13] The upbeat pop song "Shine", written by Gordon Heuckeroth and Bas van den Heuvel, emerged as the winner through a combined jury vote (30%) and public televote (70%), with viewers overwhelmingly favoring it over the jury's preferred choice.[13] Preparation for the contest included the reality television series Toppers op weg naar Moskou, a docu-soap aired on TROS that followed the group's rehearsals, challenges, and journey toward the event in Russia. Additionally, De Toppers conducted promotional tours across Eastern Europe to garner support and familiarize audiences with their performance. De Toppers performed "Shine" 19th in the second semi-final on May 14, 2009, at the Olympic Indoor Arena in Moscow, delivering an energetic show featuring synchronized choreography and colorful staging.[14] The entry received 11 points, placing 17th out of 19 participants and failing to qualify for the grand final.[15]Members
Current members
The current lineup of De Toppers consists of René Froger, Gerard Joling, Jeroen van der Boom, and Jan Smit as of 2025. This stable quartet has driven the group's ongoing success in annual arena concerts and special events, blending their individual vocal styles and stage personas into a cohesive pop spectacle. René Froger, a founding member since the group's formation in 2005, serves as the lead vocalist and primary organizer, overseeing the production of their signature "Toppers in Concert" series. His baritone delivery anchors many of the group's medleys and ballads, drawing from his extensive solo career in Dutch pop.[16][1] Gerard Joling, co-founder alongside Froger in 2005, brings high-energy performances and a versatile vocal range that spans from soulful lows to falsetto highs, often leading upbeat dance numbers and covers. His flamboyant stage presence energizes crowds during interactive segments. He temporarily stepped away in late 2008 due to internal conflicts but rejoined in 2010.[1][2] Jeroen van der Boom joined in November 2008, replacing the temporarily absent Joling, adding a dynamic stage presence characterized by charismatic interaction and rhythmic phrasing suited to pop anthems. He contributes to the group's harmony arrangements and has co-written several tracks for their live sets, enhancing their contemporary appeal.[17][1] Jan Smit officially joined on February 21, 2017, infusing the group with pop-folk elements from his solo repertoire and leveraging his international fanbase, particularly in Germany and Belgium, to broaden De Toppers' reach. His clear tenor and heartfelt delivery complements the ensemble on nostalgic hits and festive numbers.[18][1]Former members
Gordon Heuckeroth served as a founding member of De Toppers from 2005 to 2011, co-founding the group in 2005 alongside René Froger and Gerard Joling.[19] During his tenure, Heuckeroth played a key role in the group's early development, contributing vocals to initial hits such as "Shine" and performing in the inaugural Toppers in Concert shows that established their live spectacle format, including the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest representation.[20] His final exit came after the May 2011 concerts at the Amsterdam Arena.[21] Heuckeroth cited professional priorities as the primary reason for leaving, expressing a need to focus on his solo career, the formation of his new band Los Angeles The Voices, and expanding television opportunities.[21] In later statements, he elaborated that personal and professional differences, including René Froger's alcohol issues, also factored into his decision to depart permanently.[22]Concerts and tours
Toppers in Concert series
The Toppers in Concert series represents the group's primary annual live performances, launching in 2005 as a collaboration between René Froger, Gerard Joling, and Gordon at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam.[1] These events are structured as multi-night spectaculars, typically spanning several evenings over a weekend or extended period, featuring elaborate medleys of rock and pop hits, covers of international classics, and select original songs performed with high-energy staging, choreography, and audience interaction.[1] The format emphasizes communal sing-alongs, transforming the stadium into a festive gathering that blends entertainment with themes of unity and celebration.[23] Since its inception, the series has evolved to incorporate guest artists from various genres, enhancing the diversity of performances while maintaining a core focus on upbeat, nostalgic repertoire.[1] Themed editions have become a hallmark, with concepts like "Flower Power" in 2022 giving way to more varied motifs such as "Club Tropicana," where attendees are invited to participate through coordinated dress codes and props.[24][1] Following the 2016 edition, the series introduced dedicated Christmas-themed shows, starting with a six-night run at Rotterdam's Ahoy arena that drew 85,000 visitors and shifted toward holiday-infused sets with seasonal covers and decorations.[1] This expansion marked a pivot from primarily rock and pop emphases to inclusive, event-specific programming that sustains year-round appeal.[25] The series has achieved significant milestones, including over 50 sold-out shows by 2022, establishing it as the longest-running concert series in the Benelux region.[1] By 2014, it had amassed over 2 million total attendees across its runs, where the group holds the record for the most performances and largest cumulative audiences at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in the Netherlands.[23][26] These events not only highlight the group's enduring popularity but also contribute to the venue's status as a hub for major indoor spectacles, with annual editions consistently drawing tens of thousands per show.[27]Other major performances
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, De Toppers paused their live concert series in 2020 and 2021, focusing instead on individual member activities and planning for a safe return to the stage once restrictions eased.[1] The group staged a major edition of their concert series in May 2024 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, themed "Club Tropicana" to evoke a tropical paradise atmosphere. This event, held on May 24, 25, and 26, featured special guests including the Vengaboys and Italian singer Umberto Tozzi, who joined for medleys and collaborative performances that drew over 100,000 attendees across the three nights.[1][28][29] Looking ahead, De Toppers announced the "Christmas Party of the Year 2025," a series of festive sing-along spectacles scheduled for December 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, and 24 at Rotterdam Ahoy. Billed as an intimate celebration of friendship and holiday warmth to mark their 20th anniversary, the event encourages attendees to dress in "Christmas Red & Snowy White" and includes guest artists such as Emma Heesters, John West, OG3NE, and Marco Schuitmaker for a mix of Christmas classics and upbeat numbers.[30][31] The 2025 edition of Toppers in Concert, titled "Stout & Fout maar Goud," celebrated the group's 20th anniversary with three shows at the Johan Cruijff ArenA from May 30 to June 1.[1][32]Discography
Albums
De Toppers' discography comprises 19 albums released between 2005 and 2024, predominantly live recordings derived from their annual stadium concerts, which emphasize medleys of pop, disco, and Dutch hits performed in themed spectacles. These albums often reflect the evolving line-up and production elements of each show, capturing audience interaction and elaborate staging through multi-disc sets. While the group has focused on live material, their output includes compilations marking anniversaries and seasonal thematic releases, particularly Christmas albums that blend traditional carols with contemporary arrangements. Many early albums achieved platinum certifications from NVPI. The inaugural release, Toppers In Concert (2005), documented their debut performances at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, establishing the format of high-energy covers and group harmonies that defined subsequent entries. Annual installments followed, such as Toppers In Concert 2006 through Toppers In Concert 2019, each tied to that year's concert theme, with expanded tracklists in later years incorporating guest artists and extended medleys. Milestone celebrations include Toppers In Concert 2014 – Made in Holland (10 Jaar Jubileum), a three-disc live set honoring a decade of performances with patriotic and nostalgic selections, and Toppers In Concert 2019 – Happy Birthday Party (15 Jaar Jubileum 'The Best Of' Editie), which compiled highlights from prior shows. Releases paused in 2020–2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resuming with Toppers In Concert 2022 and Toppers In Concert 2024. Thematic albums extend beyond standard concerts, with Christmas releases beginning in 2006. Kerst met De Toppers (2006), an exclusive supermarket edition featuring meezing carols like "Silent Night" and "Sleigh Ride," distributed through C1000, achieved 10× platinum certification in the Netherlands. Later entries, such as Christmas Party of the Year (2022), continued this tradition with live holiday medleys recorded at Rotterdam Ahoy. Several albums in the series have earned gold and platinum certifications from NVPI, underscoring their commercial impact in the Dutch market, though specific figures vary by release.| Year | Album Title | Type | Label | Peak (Album Top 100) | Certification |

Singles
De Toppers have released over 10 standalone singles since their formation in 2005, with many serving as promotional tracks tied to their annual Toppers in Concert series or special events like Eurovision participation and holiday celebrations. These singles often consist of upbeat medleys, covers, or original songs designed to capture the high-energy vibe of their live shows, blending pop, dance, and Dutch hits to engage audiences. While not all achieved major commercial success, several entered the Dutch charts, particularly in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, reflecting the group's popularity in the Netherlands. Among their most notable singles is "Shine," released in February 2009 as their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The track peaked at number 15 on the Dutch Top 40 and spent 8 weeks on the chart, while also reaching number 2 on the Single Top 100 with 8 weeks. Despite failing to qualify for the Eurovision final (finishing 17th in the semi-final with 11 points), the single marked a commercial high point for the group.[15] Earlier hits include "Over de top!" from April 2005, which promoted their inaugural concert series and peaked at number 22 on the Dutch Top 40, charting for 5 weeks on the Single Top 100 at #6. Similarly, "Wir sind die Holländer (Toppers voor Oranje)" in April 2006, a patriotic track featuring Gerard Joling, René Froger, and Gordon, reached number 18 on the Dutch Top 40 and held 5 weeks on the Single Top 100 at #7, capitalizing on national pride during the FIFA World Cup. Other significant releases encompass holiday-themed promotional singles like "Toppers Meezing Kerstmedley" in 2006, which tied into their Christmas concerts but did not chart prominently, and "Feest" from 2010, a medley excerpted from their Toppers in Concert show that emphasized party anthems without entering the top charts. More recent efforts, such as "1001 nacht" in April 2013 (peaking at number 13 on the Dutch Top 40 with 8 weeks on the Single Top 100) and "Toppie" in August 2022 (tip 23 on Top 40), continued the tradition of event-linked singles, though with diminishing chart impact in the streaming era.[33]| Single Title | Release Year | Dutch Top 40 Peak | Weeks on Single Top 100 |

De Toppers have produced a series of video releases primarily capturing their elaborate live concert productions, with several DVDs issued between 2005 and 2016 under the Toppers in Concert banner. These videos feature complete concert performances staged in venues like the Amsterdam Arena, showcasing the group's high-energy medleys of pop, disco, and musical theater hits, often with elaborate costumes, dancers, and guest appearances. In addition to main footage, editions typically include behind-the-scenes documentaries detailing rehearsal processes and production insights, as well as standalone music videos for select tracks.[34][35] Most of these DVDs achieved commercial success in the Netherlands, earning Gold or Platinum certifications from NVPI based on sales thresholds of 25,000 and 50,000 units, respectively. For instance, Toppers Live 2005 sold 70,000 copies to reach Platinum status, while Toppers Live in Concert 2006 and Toppers in Concert 2010 each attained Platinum with 70,000 and 50,000 units. Other notable certified releases include Toppers in Concert 2007 (Gold, 30,000 units), De Toppers in Concert 2011 (Gold, 25,000 units), and Toppers in Concert 2013 (Gold, 25,000 units), reflecting the group's strong fanbase for home viewing of their theatrical spectacles.[36]| Release Title | Year | Format | Certification (NVPI) | Sales |
