Dianne Feinstein died in office at the age of 90 in Washington, D.C., due to natural causes. At the time of her death, she was the oldest sitting U.S. Senator and the longest-serving female senator in history. She had cast a vote on the Senate floor the previous day.
Dianne Feinstein won the special election to the U.S. Senate. She defeated Republican John Seymour and became California's first female U.S. Senator. Like Feinstein, Barbara Boxer was first elected to the Senate on November 3, 1992. Because Feinstein was elected to complete an unexpired term, she was sworn in as a senator in November 1992, while Boxer did not take office until January 1993; therefore, Feinstein became California's senior senator.
Dianne Feinstein finished her second term as mayor of San Francisco.
Dianne Feinstein was inaugurated as the Mayor of San Francisco by Chief Justice Rose Bird of the Supreme Court of California, succeeding George Moscone after his assassination. This made her the first female mayor of San Francisco. John Molinari was selected to replace Feinstein as president of the Board of Supervisors.
