Early life and education
Details on Dipankar De's early life are not publicly available in reliable sources.Education
De earned his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in Kolkata in 2000.[3] He completed his MD in Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh in 2005.[3] Following this, he underwent specialized training in autoimmune bullous diseases at the University of Lübeck in Germany.[3]Personal life
Family and marriages
Dipankar De's first marriage was to Bunty Rose De, an Anglo-Indian whom he met in Delhi while working there; they wed in 1969, and she worked as a receptionist at an ASP Company. The couple had two daughters, Baishali and Bishakha; Baishali predeceased her father in 2023. They later separated, with the legal divorce finalized years afterward to facilitate his subsequent marriage.[4][5] Following the separation, De began a relationship with actress Dolon Roy in the 1990s, and the pair lived together for over 23 years before formalizing their union. They held an informal temple wedding in 1997, which was not legally binding at the time, and registered their marriage on 16 January 2020, when De was 76 years old. Roy has noted that De was already separated from his first wife when their relationship commenced, emphasizing her respect for his prior family.[4][6] De and Roy's personal lives intersected with their professional careers, as they co-starred in multiple Bengali films, including Shudhui Anobhab (2014), Paka Dekha (2021), and Raktamukhi Neela (2008), where their on-screen chemistry often drew from their real-life partnership. This collaboration highlighted Roy's role in the industry alongside De's established presence in both cinema and television.[7][8][9]Health
In January 2020, Dipankar De was hospitalized in Kolkata after experiencing severe breathing difficulties, leading to his admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) at a private hospital in Salt Lake.[10][11] The 75-year-old actor was rushed to the emergency ward on January 17, shortly after complaining of respiratory distress, and was initially placed on an oxygen mask while undergoing tests.[12][13] This health scare occurred just one day after his marriage to long-time partner Dolon Roy.[14] De's condition stabilized within days, with doctors removing the oxygen support as his breathing improved, and he was discharged on January 21 after a brief stay in critical care.[15][16] The episode prompted a short pause in his professional commitments, though he resumed activities soon after, with follow-up medical reviews scheduled.[15] No long-term complications from this incident were publicly reported. In November 2023, De faced another health challenge when an uncontrolled spike in his blood sugar levels, related to diabetes, caused sudden physical exhaustion and led to his admission to a private hospital's ICU in Kolkata.[17] His condition initially deteriorated but improved under treatment, with stabilized glucose levels allowing for a swift recovery; he was expected to be discharged shortly thereafter.[17] In response, De reduced his workload to prioritize health management, as confirmed by his wife Dolon Roy, who noted his positive progress.[17] No acting career is documented for Dipankar De, the dermatologist and professor at PGIMER.
