Disney Treasure is a cruise ship owned and operated by Disney Cruise Line, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. She is the sixth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the second vessel of the Wish class, following Disney Wish (2022).

The first two ships of the Wish class were ordered on March 3, 2016, and built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Construction of the Disney Treasure began with the keel laying on March 30, 2023, and the ship was launched on August 3, 2024. She was completed on October 24, 2024, christened on November 19, 2024, in New York City, and entered service with her maiden voyage on December 21, 2024.

As a member of the Wish class, Disney Treasure is slightly larger than the preceding Dream class, with a gross tonnage of approximately 144,000, compared with about 130,000 for Dream-class ships, while retaining the same number of guest cabins. During development, the class was known internally as the Triton class. The class marked several firsts for Disney Cruise Line, including the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a lower-emission fuel and the use of azimuthing podded propulsion (Azipod).

History

[edit]

In March 2016, Disney Cruise Line announced that it had commissioned two new ships, described as larger than Dream-class but with a similar number of staterooms.[6][7] A third ship of the class, later named Disney Treasure, was announced on July 15, 2017, at the D23 Expo.[8] Delivery was initially planned for 2022 but was postponed to 2024 in 2020.[9]

In March 2018, Disney Cruise Line released a rendering of the new class.[10][11] The 140,000-ton vessels were designed to be powered by LNG and to accommodate at least 2,500 passengers.[12] In January 2019, public documents published by Port Canaveral referred to the class as Triton.[13][14] The class was later named after its lead ship, Disney Wish, which was delivered in June 2022.

On September 11, 2022, Disney Cruise Line confirmed the name Disney Treasure at the D23 Expo. Company materials described the ship's design as themed around adventure, with a Grand Hall drawing on architectural motifs associated with Asia and Africa, as well as the fictional city of Agrabah.[15]

The first section of the ship arrived at Meyer Werft on November 27, 2022.[16] The floating engine room unit, measuring 140 by 39 metres (459 ft × 128 ft) and housing MAN 12V 51/60DF engines and LNG tanks, was constructed at Neptun Werft in Rostock and later transferred to Meyer Werft.[17][18] The keel laying took place on March 30, 2023.[19] The hull was completed in December 2023.[20]

The ship was floated out in March 2024 and departed the shipyard in September for Eemshaven, where it arrived on September 19.[21] It subsequently underwent sea trials in the Skagerrak.[22]

The ship was delivered on October 24, 2024, in Eemshaven.[23] During its delivery voyage to North America, it assisted a family of four whose sailboat was taking on water approximately 80 miles (130 km) off Bermuda; all four were brought aboard safely.[24]

The christening took place on November 19, 2024, in New York City.[25] The maiden voyage departed on December 21, 2024, from Port Canaveral, Florida, operating seven-night itineraries in the eastern and western Caribbean.[26]

Design

[edit]

The ship has a gross tonnage of 144,256[4] with 1,250 staterooms.[27]

On September 5, 2023, Disney Cruise Line shared a first look at their newest ship, Disney Treasure, which embarked on December 21, 2024. Disney Treasure, similar to Disney Wish, would have several restaurants, immersive spaces and experiences themed to various Disney characters and properties, including Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and Pixar. The ship features a Coco-themed restaurant, a Tomorrow Tower Suite inspired by EPCOT and a Jungle Cruise-inspired lounge.[citation needed]

In October 2023, Disney announced that the ship would also feature a bar themed after its attraction The Haunted Mansion, a first in the cruise line's history.[28]

Horns

[edit]

Disney Treasure features the signature Wish-class musical horns. In addition to all horns found on Disney Wish and other specialty horns, Disney Treasure's "Mickey" horns play the following tunes:

Recreation

The ship features a water coaster at sea, called the AquaMouse, which is similar to Disney Wish's version of the water coaster, but it includes a brand-new Mickey and Minnie Mouse short called Curse of the Golden Egg, which is be expected to include immersive show scenes, special effects and incredible ocean views, with some splashing, drifting and sliding through a mysterious ancient temple in search of legendary treasure.

Entertainment

[edit]

Disney Treasure includes three theatres:

  • Walt Disney Theatre (1,274 seats; live original productions: The Tale of Moana, Beauty and the Beast and Disney Seas the Adventure)
  • Wonderland Cinema
  • Neverland Cinema

Rotational dining

[edit]

Every night of a Disney Treasure cruise, guests dine at a different restaurant. This is called "rotational dining". On a Disney ship guests rotate along with their servers which helps develop the relationship between diner and wait staff.[29]

The rotational dining restaurants on Disney Treasure are 1923, located on deck 3 aft; Worlds of Marvel, located on deck 4 aft; and Plaza de Coco, located on deck 5 aft. As well as rotational dining, the Disney Treasure also has two specialty restaurants: PALO Steakhouse and Enchanté, which incur an additional cost and are exclusively for adults.

Announcement and ordering

The Disney Treasure was announced on July 15, 2017, during a presentation at the D23 Expo in , as the third newbuild in Disney Cruise Line's expansion plans, following the reveal of two additional vessels the previous year. This unnamed ship at the time was positioned as a key part of the fleet growth, bringing the total to six vessels overall and forming one of three planned in the innovative Wish-class, powered by for reduced emissions. The construction contract for the Disney Treasure was awarded to , a renowned shipbuilder based in , , aligning with the yard's prior agreements for the other Wish-class ships. Meyer Werft's selection underscored Disney's commitment to high-quality, family-oriented cruise design, with the yard specializing in large-scale luxury liners. The initial projection set the ship's debut for 2023, though subsequent delays due to global events shifted this to late 2024. The Disney Treasure shares its Wish-class design with sister ships like the , emphasizing immersive Disney storytelling and modern amenities across approximately 135,000 gross tons.

Construction milestones

The of the Disney Treasure, the second vessel in the Wish-class series built for , took place at the shipyard in , , utilizing the yard's advanced modular where the ship is divided into prefabricated sections assembled like building blocks for efficiency. This approach allows parallel fabrication of components, such as cabins and engine rooms, before integration into the hull. Key construction began with the keel laying ceremony on March 30, 2023, marking the official start of assembly by placing the ship's foundational structure in the and embedding a ceremonial for . Following this, significant progress included the installation of over 1,200 prefabricated stateroom modules, highlighting the modular efficiency at . The ship reached a major milestone with its float-out on August 3, 2024, when the completed hull was transferred from the covered construction hall to the Ems River for outfitting of interiors and systems. Final assembly concluded ahead of schedule, with the Disney Treasure deemed complete on October 24, 2024, and handed over to Disney Cruise Line by Meyer Werft on the same date. The project, estimated at approximately $1.1 billion, underscored Meyer Werft's expertise in delivering high-end cruise vessels.

Christening and maiden voyage

The Disney Treasure was officially christened on November 19, 2024, at Pier 60 in along the . The ceremony honored the ship's entry into the fleet and featured a collective godparent role assigned to the Company's approximately 200,000 cast members, crew, and Imagineers worldwide, as announced by CEO . Design and specifications

Physical dimensions and capacity

The Disney Treasure measures 341 meters (1,119 feet) in length and has a of 144,256 GT, making it one of the larger vessels in the fleet. Its beam is 39 meters (128 feet), contributing to its substantial internal volume for accommodations and facilities across 15 passenger decks. These dimensions position the ship comparably to other Wish-class vessels, such as the , in terms of overall scale. The ship accommodates up to 4,000 passengers at full capacity, supported by 1,250 staterooms that include a variety of categories such as inside staterooms, oceanview staterooms, verandah staterooms, and suites. This configuration allows for flexible occupancy, with many staterooms designed for families and featuring convertible sleeping arrangements. Complementing the passenger load, the Disney Treasure carries a of 1,555 members to ensure comprehensive service and operations.

Propulsion and performance

The Disney Treasure employs a hybrid liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion system, which powers the vessel through five MAN 12V51/60DF dual-fuel engines connected to two ABB azimuth thrusters, each rated at 19.5 MW (26,100 hp). This configuration, standard for the Wish-class ships, enables efficient power distribution and 360-degree maneuverability without traditional rudders or propellers. The ship's maximum speed is 24 knots, with a service cruising speed of approximately 22 knots, allowing it to complete typical itineraries while optimizing fuel use. The units, combined with four bow thrusters, enhance low-speed handling and docking precision in congested ports. Additionally, stabilizers reduce rolling motions during voyages, improving comfort on routes prone to variable sea conditions. Fuel efficiency is bolstered by the LNG system, which is estimated to make the Disney Treasure nearly 30% more efficient than conventional diesel-powered cruise ships of similar size, while emitting about 20% fewer greenhouse gases. This setup inherently complies with (IMO) Tier III standards for (NOx) emissions without requiring exhaust aftertreatment, and it meets global (SOx) limits through near-zero sulfur content in LNG. The streamlined hull further minimizes hydrodynamic drag, contributing to overall savings.

Exterior and interior theming

The Disney Treasure embodies an overarching adventure theme, drawing inspiration from classic Disney films and park attractions to create an immersive narrative of exploration and discovery at sea. This design philosophy integrates elements from stories like , Coco, and , transforming the ship into a floating tribute to Disney's storytelling legacy. On the exterior, the ship features the signature red funnels of the fleet, with the forward funnel incorporating Funnel Vision, a large LED screen for , and serving as the entry point for the AquaMouse water coaster attraction. The bow displays an emblem of in an adventure-ready outfit, continuing the line's tradition of character motifs while evoking a sense of nautical heroism. At the stern, over nine-foot-tall sculptures of Peter Pan and from Peter Pan further reinforce the adventure motif, adding whimsical yet dramatic flair to the ship's silhouette. Interior theming centers on the Grand Hall atrium, inspired by the bustling marketplace of Agrabah from , complete with golden accents, intricate arches, and storytelling elements such as custom artwork depicting scenes from the film and a central multi-deck fountain. A chandelier overhead pays homage to previous vessels, blending historical nods with fantastical lighting effects that enhance the enchanting atmosphere. Public spaces throughout the ship weave in Disney intellectual property through murals, sculptures, and ambient lighting to foster thematic cohesion. For instance, the Skipper Society lounge draws from via its inspiration, featuring tropical foliage, camp-style decor, and artwork evoking river expeditions with hidden details like playful animal motifs. Similarly, areas influenced by Coco incorporate warm amber lighting and cultural murals celebrating Mexican heritage, while -themed elements appear in statues of , , and the magic carpet, creating layered visual narratives that encourage guest interaction without overwhelming the spaces.
