Edward married Alexandra, eldest daughter of Prince Christian (later King Christian IX) of Denmark, in an arranged marriage for dynastic purposes.

The couple had six children, with five surviving to maturity. Their eldest son, Prince Albert Victor, died of pneumonia in 1892.
