Birth and family
Enrico Pepe was born on 12 November 1989 in Vico Equense, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples within the Campania region of Italy.[1][9] Details on his family background remain limited in public records.Youth career in Italy
Enrico Pepe began his formative years in football within the youth setup of Nuovo Campobasso, where he developed primarily as a centre-back.[1] In the 2007–08 season, at age 17, he featured for Nuovo Campobasso in Serie D, gaining experience in competitive matches.[1]Club career in Italy
Professional debut with Campobasso
Enrico Pepe made his professional debut on loan from Salernitana with Campobasso in the 2007-08 season.[10] In the 2007–2008 season, Pepe featured for Campobasso in Serie D Girone F, making 14 appearances as a defender without scoring any goals.[11][12] His role primarily involved contributing to the backline during a campaign where the team rebuilt its squad amid competitive challenges in the amateur top flight.Spells at Salernitana, Siena, and loans
In 2008, Enrico Pepe joined Salernitana from Campobasso, initially on loan, and went on to make 12 appearances for the club across Serie B campaigns in the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons without scoring.[13] To gain more consistent playing time, he was loaned to Cassino in Serie D for the second half of the 2008–09 season, where he featured in 13 matches.[13] His time at Salernitana continued into early 2011, but opportunities remained limited, prompting further loans to lower-tier sides. In January 2011, Pepe was loaned to Siracusa in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione, appearing in 6 league games during the latter part of the 2010–11 season.[13] In summer 2011, following his loan at Siracusa, Pepe transferred permanently from Salernitana to Siena in Serie A, but failed to break into the first team, recording 0 appearances over the 2011–12 campaign.[14][15] Seeking regular minutes, Siena immediately loaned him to Paganese in Lega Pro, where he enjoyed a breakthrough spell, making 27 appearances and scoring 1 goal in the 2011–12 season.[16] Pepe signed permanently with Paganese in 2012, accumulating 31 appearances without goals across the next two seasons in Lega Pro.[13] His frequent moves reflected a pattern of dropping to lower divisions for development and match exposure, as higher-level clubs like Salernitana and Siena offered scant opportunities. In 2014, he joined Messina on a free transfer, solidifying his role with 39 appearances in the 2014–15 Lega Pro season, again without finding the net.[13]Club career in Malta
Arrival at Floriana and initial success
Enrico Pepe signed with Floriana FC in August 2015, transferring from Italian Serie D club A.C.R. Messina at the age of 25. The move marked a shift from Italy's competitive lower divisions, where he had encountered limited playing opportunities, to the Maltese Premier League, providing a platform for more consistent first-team football. Alongside fellow Italian defender Filippo Andrea Scozzese, Pepe was brought in to reinforce Floriana's backline ahead of the 2015–16 season.[17][1] Over the next three seasons from 2015 to 2018, Pepe established himself as a reliable presence in Floriana's defense, appearing in 78 Maltese Premier League matches. His tenure highlighted a breakthrough in his career, with the defender earning regular starts and demonstrating adaptability to the demands of Maltese top-flight football.[7][18] Primarily deployed as a centre-back, Pepe played a crucial tactical role in organizing the team's defensive structure, leveraging his physicality and positioning to support clean sheets in key fixtures and contribute to overall team stability. This period at Floriana represented his initial success abroad, solidifying his reputation as a dependable defender in a new league environment.[1]Moves to Ħamrun Spartans, Birkirkara, Gżira United, and Marsaxlokk
In 2018, following his time at Floriana, Pepe transferred to Ħamrun Spartans on a free transfer, marking his next step in Maltese football.[19] During the 2018–19 season, he made 27 appearances across the Premier League and Maltese FA Trophy, contributing 3 assists but no goals, as the team focused on rebuilding under new management.[20] Pepe joined Birkirkara in June 2019, signing a three-year contract that became his longest tenure in Malta, spanning until 2024.[21] Over five seasons, he accumulated 112 appearances and 2 goals in domestic competitions, establishing himself as a reliable centre-back.[20] His consistency earned him leadership roles, including captaincy by 2023, where he extended his contract and provided stability to the defense during challenging campaigns.[22] Notably, Pepe featured in 6 UEFA Conference League qualifier matches for Birkirkara, including the 2021–22 and 2023–24 seasons, where his defensive contributions helped the team advance in early rounds against opponents like SP La Fiorita, NK Olimpija Ljubljana, and NK Maribor.[20] In July 2024, Pepe moved to Gżira United on a free transfer, seeking a fresh challenge after his prolific spell at Birkirkara.[23] During the 2024–25 season, he recorded 22 appearances with no goals or assists, primarily in the Premier League and cups, bolstering the squad's backline amid their mid-table push.[20] Pepe transferred to Marsaxlokk in July 2025 on a free transfer to continue his veteran presence in the league.[24] As of November 20, 2025, he has made 8 appearances across the Premier League Opening Round and Maltese FA Trophy, with no goals, maintaining his role as a key defender in the team's early-season efforts.[20]International career
Maltese citizenship and eligibility
Enrico Pepe, an Italian-born defender, was granted Maltese citizenship on sporting merit in August 2020 after five years of residency and active participation in the Maltese Premier League.[25][6] This recognition by Maltese authorities acknowledged his contributions to local football, including consistent performances for clubs such as Floriana and Birkirkara, which added value to Maltese sports.[26][27] The citizenship process involved advocacy from the Maltese Football Association (MFA), which petitioned the government on Pepe's behalf, emphasizing his long-term integration and impact on domestic competitions since arriving in Malta in 2015.[25][28] Under Maltese naturalization laws, eligibility typically requires at least five years of legal residence, a condition Pepe fulfilled through his professional club career, with the "sporting merit" designation highlighting his exceptional service to the nation's football ecosystem.[3][29] With Maltese citizenship secured, Pepe became eligible to represent the national team under FIFA Statutes (Article 5), which stipulate that players must hold the permanent nationality of the association they wish to play for.[30] As he had not competed in any senior international matches for Italy, his new nationality established direct ties without requiring an association switch, aligning with FIFA's provisions for naturalized players demonstrating residency-based connections to the country.[31][32] This eligibility framework supports nations like Malta in bolstering their squads with players who have contributed to local football development.[25]National team debut and appearances
Enrico Pepe earned his first cap for the Malta national team on 6 September 2020, starting as a centre-back in a 1-1 draw against Latvia during the UEFA Nations League at Ta' Qali National Stadium.[33] This debut came shortly after acquiring Maltese citizenship, enabling his eligibility for international selection.[8] As of November 2025, Pepe has accumulated 36 caps for Malta, all without scoring a goal, establishing himself as a dependable defender in the squad.[8] His appearances span multiple competitions, with a focus on maintaining defensive solidity in a team often competing in lower UEFA tiers. He continues to feature regularly, including in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, and Poland. Pepe has been a regular in Malta's UEFA Nations League campaigns, featuring in six matches across editions, including a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory over San Marino on 5 June 2022 that contributed to their group performance.[8][34] In these fixtures, his role emphasized organized defending and aerial duels, contributing to clean sheets in key games against similarly ranked opponents.[35] In FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Pepe has made 14 appearances, providing experience in high-stakes matches such as the 1-3 loss to Russia on 24 March 2021, where he started despite the challenging opposition.[8][36] His consistent selections in qualifiers for the 2022 and 2026 tournaments highlight his reliability as a centre-back, often tasked with anchoring the backline against stronger European sides.Honours and achievements

Pepe's defensive prowess was particularly evident in key competitions, where his positioning and aerial ability supported Floriana's push for silverware. In the 2018 Maltese Super Cup final, he featured in the starting lineup as Floriana defeated Hibernians 1–0 on December 13, 2017, securing the club's second Super Cup title and marking Pepe's first major honour in Malta.[37]Club titles with Birkirkara
