São Paulo
Felipe Araruna Hoffmann was born on 12 March 1996 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he developed an early interest in football that led him to join the youth academy of São Paulo FC in 2009 at the age of 13.[2] Araruna progressed through São Paulo's youth system from 2009 to 2016, honing his skills as a versatile player capable of operating as a defensive midfielder or right-back. In December 2016, his performances with the U-20 team caught the eye of then-manager Rogério Ceni, resulting in his promotion to the professional squad ahead of the 2017 season.[6][7] Araruna signed his first professional contract with São Paulo in 2017 and made his senior debut on 9 February 2017 in a Copa do Brasil match against Moto Club, which São Paulo won 1-0. Over the next three years, he featured sporadically for the first team, accumulating 19 appearances in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with no goals scored, alongside a total of 42 appearances across all competitions and still without finding the net.[8][1][8] Despite his breakthrough, limited playing opportunities at São Paulo—stemming from intense competition in midfield and defense—prompted the club to loan him to Fortaleza on 8 March 2019 to gain more experience. He returned from the loan on 26 January 2020 before securing a permanent move to English Championship side Reading just four days later for an undisclosed fee.[9][10][11]Fortaleza
In March 2019, Felipe Araruna joined Fortaleza on a season-long loan from São Paulo, where he was deployed primarily as a defensive midfielder or right-back to gain more playing experience after limited opportunities with his parent club.[12][2] Araruna adapted quickly to the team, making 21 appearances across multiple competitions during the 2019 season, including 9 in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, 2 in the Copa do Brasil, 7 in the Copa do Nordeste, and 3 in the Campeonato Cearense, without registering any goals or assists.[13] His contributions were mainly defensive, providing solidity in midfield and on the right flank; notable performances included starting both legs of the Copa do Brasil round-of-16 tie against Athletico Paranaense, where he helped secure a 0–0 draw in the first leg at home on May 16.[14] Fortaleza finished 9th in the 2019 Série A table with 53 points from 15 wins, 8 draws, and 15 losses, securing a mid-table position in their return to the top flight.[15] Araruna played a supporting role in this campaign, offering depth during rotations and amid minor injury concerns in the squad, appearing as a substitute in several Série A matches to maintain defensive balance.[13] The loan concluded at the end of 2019, after which Araruna's solid showings led to a recall by São Paulo and subsequent evaluation that paved the way for his transfer to Europe.[16]Reading
Felipe Araruna joined EFL Championship club Reading on 30 January 2020, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2022 for an undisclosed fee from São Paulo.[5][11] The Brazilian, who could operate as a right-back or defensive midfielder, arrived with prior professional experience in Brazil's top flight.[5] Araruna made his Reading debut in a 1–1 home draw against Hull City on 8 February 2020, starting as a right-back in the Championship.[17] He featured in three league matches that season before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted play, showing promise in limited minutes but struggling with the physical intensity of English football compared to the Brazilian game.[18] Over his time at the club, Araruna made just six league appearances and nine in total across all competitions, scoring no goals but recording one assist in the EFL Cup.[13] Injuries severely hampered his progress; in September 2020, he suffered a serious knee injury during a Carabao Cup match against Colchester United, sidelining him for 16 months.[19] Upon returning in January 2022, he made a substitute appearance in an FA Cup third-round tie against Kidderminster Harriers on 8 January, only to dislocate his knee after 59 minutes, further limiting his opportunities amid stiff competition for places in the squad. Reading announced on 20 May 2022 that Araruna would not be offered a new contract upon its expiry, marking the end of his stint in England. He retired from professional football on 1 July 2022 and, as of 2025, the 29-year-old has not been associated with any professional club or confirmed post-playing activities such as coaching.[2] Araruna's tenure at Reading had minimal on-field impact due to persistent injuries and adaptation challenges, though his signing added an element of international diversity to the squad's depth as one of the club's few Brazilian players.[20]Achievements and statistics
