View on GrokipediaEarly life and youth career
Early life
Felipe Andrés Mora Aliaga was born on August 2, 1993, in Santiago, Chile, specifically in the La Florida commune.[8] Although one report notes his birth occurred accidentally in the nearby Puente Alto area, he was raised from infancy in the modest Villa Los Copihues neighborhood of La Florida, a working-class area on the outskirts of the capital.[9] Mora grew up in a close-knit family that provided strong support for his early interests. His father, Julio Mora—known as "Lete" and a former amateur striker in the number 9 position—played a pivotal role in nurturing his son's passion for football, often driving him to practices and preparing meals for training days.[10][9] His mother, Paola Aliaga, along with his parents, worked in an auto parts store to support the family.[9] As the eldest of two siblings, Mora was also influenced by his extended family, including his paternal grandparents, Julio (deceased) and María Magdalena Montecinos, and his maternal grandmother, Adriana, who helped care for him during his childhood.[10][9] His aunt, Mónica Mora, remains a key figure in the family, emphasizing the importance of Universidad de Chile in their aspirations for him.[9] Mora's childhood in La Florida revolved around the local community, where he attended primary school at Colegio Alaín and later Colegio Rafael Sotomayor.[9] His initial exposure to football came at age five through informal play in the neighborhood streets and on nearby multicanchas, joining games with friends in the Villa Los Copihues area.[10] From ages five to twelve, he honed his skills at the amateur club "Resto del Mundo," a local team coached by Celinda on a dirt pitch, where his talent quickly stood out despite the humble settings.[10][9] These early experiences in street and community football laid the foundation for his development, supported by his family's encouragement. In 2006, at age thirteen, Mora transitioned to the youth academy of Audax Italiano after his father connected with a club scout.[10]Youth career
Felipe Mora joined the youth academy of Audax Italiano in 2006 at the age of 13, beginning his development as a forward within the club's lower divisions in Santiago, Chile.[11] He progressed through the age-group teams, honing his skills in Chilean youth leagues and tournaments, where his goal-scoring ability and physical presence stood out, earning recognition as one of the club's promising talents.[12][13] Mora's breakthrough came with his promotion to the senior squad, making his professional debut on 29 January 2011 as a substitute in the 78th minute during Audax Italiano's 1–3 Primera División home loss to Palestino.[14] Just eight months later, in one of his earliest starts, the 18-year-old Mora announced his arrival by scoring a hat-trick in a thrilling 4–3 victory over Cobreloa on 11 September 2011, showcasing the clinical finishing that would define his career.[15] During this transitional period, Mora also featured for Audax Italiano's reserve side (Audax B) from 2012 to 2014, where he netted 4 goals in 5 appearances, further solidifying his reputation before establishing himself in the first team.[16] These early experiences in youth and reserve matches, combined with limited senior outings, laid the foundation for his emergence as a key attacking option.[17]Club career
Audax Italiano (2011–2016)
Felipe Mora signed his first professional contract with Audax Italiano in 2011, debuting in the Primera División later that year at the age of 18 following a successful youth career at the club. Over his five-year tenure, he became a regular fixture in the first team, accumulating 121 appearances and 33 goals in the Chilean top flight, establishing himself as a reliable goal-scoring threat.[16] His contributions extended beyond the league, with additional goals in cup competitions, including seven in the 2015 Copa Chile.[15] Mora's development as a central striker was marked by steady progression, initially featuring in limited minutes during the 2011–14 seasons where he honed his positioning and finishing. His tactical role emphasized hold-up play to link midfield and attack, often dropping deep to create space for wingers while exploiting his pace and aerial ability in the box. A standout performance came in September 2015, when he scored twice in a 3–1 league victory over Universidad de Chile, showcasing his clinical finishing and composure under pressure.[18] The 2015–16 season represented Mora's breakthrough, as he netted 12 goals in 26 league appearances, helping Audax Italiano secure a mid-table finish.[2] This form elevated his profile, leading to his departure in mid-2016 when Universidad de Chile acquired him for a reported US$1 million transfer fee, allowing the ambitious forward to join a bigger club in pursuit of greater competitive challenges and exposure.[19]Universidad de Chile (2016–2017)
In July 2016, Felipe Mora transferred from Audax Italiano to Universidad de Chile for a reported fee of €880,000, signing a one-year contract that ran until July 2017.[14] His move came after a strong finish to the previous season at Audax, where he had established himself as a prolific scorer, building a reputation that attracted interest from one of Chile's biggest clubs.[20] During the 2016–17 season, Mora emerged as a key figure in Universidad de Chile's attack, making 26 appearances and scoring 18 goals in the Primera División, along with 5 assists. His scoring prowess was particularly evident in the Torneo de Transición (Clausura), where he netted 13 goals to claim the league's top-scorer honor and drive the team's championship campaign.[15] Mora's contributions were instrumental in Universidad de Chile securing the 2017 Primera División title, ending a four-year drought for the club. He scored the decisive goal in the title-clinching 1–0 victory over San Luis on May 20, 2017, striking in the 22nd minute to secure the points needed on the final matchday.[21] Earlier in the Clausura, he delivered a standout performance with a hat-trick in a 3–0 win against his former club Audax Italiano on March 12, 2017, scoring in the 6th, 47th, and 90+1st minutes to highlight his rivalry-fueled impact.[22][23] Following the title win, Mora departed Universidad de Chile in July 2017, transferring to Mexican club Cruz Azul for a fee of €3.6 million as he sought opportunities abroad.[24][14]Cruz Azul (2017–2018)
Felipe Mora's successful spell at Universidad de Chile, where he scored prolifically, drew interest from Mexican clubs and led to his transfer to Cruz Azul in July 2017 for a reported fee of €3 million.[24][25] Upon arriving in Mexico, Mora quickly adapted to Liga MX, contributing significantly during the Apertura 2017 tournament with 8 goals in 16 league appearances, helping Cruz Azul secure a spot in the playoffs.[26] His goals included a last-minute header in a 1-0 victory over Tigres UANL in August 2017, a brace in a 2-1 win against Morelia in November 2017 that boosted their playoff hopes, and the decisive strike in a 1-0 triumph over Veracruz later that month to clinch qualification for La Liguilla.[27][28][29] In the Apertura playoffs, Mora featured in both legs of Cruz Azul's quarterfinal tie against Tijuana, playing the full 180 minutes but without scoring as the team was eliminated on aggregate.[30] Overall, across all competitions in the 2017–18 season, he recorded 12 goals in 33 league appearances, plus 2 more in the Copa MX.[3] Mora's form dipped in the Clausura 2018, where he managed only 4 goals in 15 league outings, amid increased competition for attacking positions under coach Paco Jémez.[31] This relative underwhelm, following his stronger Apertura output, prompted Cruz Azul to loan him to rivals Pumas UNAM in June 2018 to regain consistent playing time and form.[15]Pumas UNAM (2018–2020)
In July 2018, Felipe Mora joined Pumas UNAM on loan from Cruz Azul, marking his continued adaptation to Mexican football after a challenging debut season with the latter club.[19] During the loan period, which spanned the remainder of the 2018 calendar year, Mora made 37 appearances and scored 14 goals across all competitions, establishing himself as a key attacking option.[2] His contributions were particularly notable in the 2018 Apertura, where he netted multiple goals, including his Liga MX debut strike in a 2-0 win over Veracruz on July 20, helping Pumas secure a third-place regular-season finish and advance to the Liguilla playoffs.[32] In the postseason, Pumas reached the semifinals, eliminating Monterrey in the quarterfinals before falling to Club América, with Mora providing crucial support in the offensive line during the run.[33] Following the expiration of his loan in December 2018, Pumas exercised the option to sign Mora permanently in January 2019 for a reported fee of around €1.6 million.[19] Over the subsequent seasons, he added 14 appearances and 1 goal in Liga MX regular-season play, primarily during the 2019 Apertura, where limited minutes reflected increased competition for places and occasional injury concerns.[2] Across his full tenure at Pumas from 2018 to 2020, Mora recorded 51 appearances and 15 goals in Liga MX matches, contributing to a total of 65 outings and 19 goals in all competitions.[34] By early 2020, with his contract set to wind down and opportunities abroad emerging, Mora transitioned to Major League Soccer, joining the Portland Timbers on loan in January, effectively concluding his Liga MX chapter on a solid note of consistency despite not achieving major silverware with Pumas.[15]Portland Timbers (2020–present)
Felipe Mora joined the Portland Timbers on loan from Pumas UNAM in February 2020, making an immediate impact during the MLS is Back Tournament held in Orlando amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He appeared in 19 MLS regular-season matches (13 starts), scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists, with several of his contributions coming in the tournament where Portland defeated Orlando City SC 2–1 in the final to claim the title.[1] In January 2021, the Timbers finalized a permanent transfer for Mora, signing him to a multi-year contract. His debut full season yielded 11 goals and 5 assists in 29 regular-season appearances, followed by 2 playoff goals, including a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer in the 2021 MLS Cup final against New York City FC, though Portland lost on penalties. In November 2022, Mora signed a contract extension with the club through 2025, including a club option for 2026, solidifying his role as a key forward.[35] Mora's tenure was hampered by injuries, notably a left knee cartilage restoration surgery in August 2022 that sidelined him for the remainder of that season and limited him to just 7 regular-season appearances (1 goal) in 2022. A subsequent knee procedure in early 2023 restricted him to 15 matches (6 goals), though he returned to form in 2024 with a standout campaign of 14 goals and 6 assists in 29 regular-season games, helping Portland reach the playoffs. He also contributed in the U.S. Open Cup, scoring in a quarterfinal run that season.[36][37][1] As of November 2025, Mora has made approximately 152 appearances for Portland across all competitions, scoring 51 goals. In the 2025 season, he recorded 7 goals in 36 matches, including a first-half brace in the MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card win over Real Salt Lake on October 22 and a penalty-kick goal in a subsequent round-one match against San Diego FC. His consistent presence has been vital in Portland's postseason pushes, blending clinical finishing with physicality honed from prior Liga MX experience.[38][39][40]International career
Youth international career
Mora earned a call-up to the Chile under-20 national team in 2013, where he made nine appearances and scored two goals across major tournaments.[41] His international youth debut came during the 2013 South American Youth Football Championship in Argentina, a qualifying event for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Of the nine appearances, seven were in this tournament (one goal), primarily as a substitute. On January 23, 2013, he scored Chile's opening goal in a 4–1 victory over Ecuador. Chile topped Group A with four wins in the first stage before finishing fourth in the final hexagonal stage, qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup as one of the top four teams overall.[41] Subsequently, Mora represented Chile at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, where the team progressed to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2007. He appeared in two group stage matches in Group E, substituting in for three minutes in a 1–1 draw against England on June 26, 2013, and starting in a 1–2 defeat to Iraq on June 29, 2013, with a late strike in the 90th minute.[41] Chile earned second place in the group with one win (2–1 over Egypt), one draw (1–1 against England), and one loss, before defeating Croatia 2–0 in the round of 16 and falling 3–4 after extra time to Ghana in the quarter-finals. Mora did not feature in the knockout stages. These tournaments showcased Mora's potential as a forward, with his goal-scoring contributions highlighting his role in Chile's competitive youth campaigns and aiding his transition toward senior national team consideration in subsequent years.[2]Senior international career
Felipe Mora made his senior international debut for the Chile national team on May 31, 2018, in a friendly match against Romania, coming on as a substitute in the 17th minute during a 3–2 victory.[2] Over the course of his senior career, Mora has earned 11 caps and scored 1 goal for Chile as of November 2024, with no additional appearances recorded in 2025.[4] His first and only international goal came on October 15, 2019, in a 3–2 friendly win over Guinea, where he scored in the 90th minute.[4] Mora's senior appearances have primarily consisted of friendlies and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Notable matches include his debut against Romania and a subsequent friendly against Serbia on June 4, 2018 (a 0–1 loss), as well as a 3–1 friendly win over Mexico on March 23, 2019. In World Cup qualifying, he featured in games such as the 0–0 draw with Colombia on October 12, 2019; the 2–0 win over Peru on November 14, 2020; the 2–1 victory against Venezuela on November 17, 2020; the 1–1 draw with Bolivia on June 9, 2021; the 2–0 win over Peru on October 8, 2021; and more recent qualifiers ending in 0–0 draws with Peru and a 4–2 win over Venezuela in November 2024.[4] He has not yet appeared in Copa América tournaments.[4] As of November 2025, Mora, at age 32, remains eligible for selection and continues to perform at a high level with Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer, positioning him as a potential candidate for future call-ups amid Chile's ongoing World Cup qualifying efforts.[2]Career statistics
