George V had a close relationship with his first cousin, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, but opposed offering sanctuary to the deposed Tsar and his family in 1917.

George V was deeply affected by the execution of the Romanovs, writing in his diary, 'It was a foul murder. I was devoted to Nicky, who was the kindest of men and thorough gentleman: loved his country and people.'
