Gregory Kenneth Larson (November 15, 1939 – June 20, 2024) was an American professional football player who was a center in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Giants. He played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and was selected in the sixth round of the 1961 NFL draft. Larson was also selected in the eleventh round of the 1961 AFL draft by the San Diego Chargers.

A three-year letterman, he was a team captain and All-Big Ten selection when the Golden Gophers won the national championship in 1960. He was inducted into the university's M Club Hall of Fame in 2010.[1]

Larson announced his retirement as an active player on May 17, 1974, after 13 seasons as the Giants' starting center. He played in 179 games which at the time was second in team history to Joe Morrison. He missed only three games despite seven football-related operations, including two on each knee.[2]

Larson died in Plymouth, Minnesota on June 20, 2024, at the age of 84.[3]

Gregory Kenneth Larson was born on November 15, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Evelyn (Lachowitzer) and Kenneth Larson. He grew up in Minneapolis with his younger brother Bruce. Larson attended Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He earned Minnesota state basketball titles in his junior and senior years. In recognition of his high school athletic accomplishments, Larson was later inducted into the Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame.

University of Minnesota

Greg Larson attended the University of Minnesota following his high school graduation in Minneapolis. He joined the Golden Gophers football team as an unrecruited walk-on player. As a freshman, Larson played both offense and defense in a standout year, which led the university to offer him a full athletic scholarship to continue with the team. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a business degree. Larson became a three-year letterman and served as team captain during his time with the Golden Gophers.

Business career and community

After retiring from the NFL following the 1973 season, Greg Larson moved his family to the Brainerd Lakes area in 1974. There, he purchased Sports Supply, a regional sporting goods business, before founding GLSports. Larson operated GLSports as a family business, working side by side with his wife Joey for many years and eventually including their children to create a true family-operated enterprise. At one time, GLSports employed as many as 100 people, whom he valued greatly. Greg and Joey sold the business in 2010. Through his long-term operation of a local sporting goods company in the Brainerd Lakes region, Larson established enduring ties to the community, emphasizing personal connections and valuing those around him.

Golf and later interests

After his retirement from professional football, Greg Larson's greatest passion in later years was golf. He enjoyed the competition of the sport and won several club championships over the years. However, what he cherished most was the lifelong friendships that developed through golf. Larson placed immense value on connections with people above all else, making special bonds with nearly everyone he encountered throughout his life. Despite his many accomplishments and talents, he remained amazingly humble. He was consistently surrounded by family, lifelong friends from his early years, and new friends he made wherever he went, reflecting his deep emphasis on relationships over individual achievement.

Personal life

Larson married Josephine "Joey" Blegen in May 1961, and they remained married for 63 years until his death. They had four children: Karin (married to Ken Dayton) of Wayzata, Minnesota; Barton (married to Natalie Rogness) of Hager City, Wisconsin; Michael (married to Stacie Mans) of Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin; and Christopher of Tampa, Florida. Larson was survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In 1974, following his retirement, Larson moved his family to the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota. He purchased Sports Supply, a regional sporting goods business, and later founded GLSports, which at its peak employed up to 100 people. He ran the business alongside his wife for many years before involving their children, making it a family operation. The family sold GLSports in 2010. In his later years, Larson was an avid golfer who won several club championships and prized the lifelong friendships he formed through the sport. He resided in Nisswa, Minnesota, before his death in Plymouth, Minnesota.
