While fluent in English and her native French, she is moderately proficient in Japanese. Her stage name, Himeka, comes from a character she created in a story she wrote when she was 13 years old.

Career

[edit]

Born in Quebec, St-Onge was very interested in theater and music. At the age of 12, St-Onge taught herself English by singing Disney songs. Soon after at 13, she began writing her own stories in which Himeka was the main character.[1] Her interest in Japanese culture started at the age of 15 when she saw an episode of the anime series Sailor Moon.[2] In 2008, St-Onge moved to Japan to pursue her singing career.[3]

She was the winner of the Second Annual Animax Anison Grand Prix, which gathers aspiring singers from all over Japan for the chance to make a professional debut and sing a theme song in an anime television show.[4] Her debut single "Asu e no Kizuna", released on May 27, 2009, was the opening theme to the anime adaptation of the PlayStation 3 video game Valkyria Chronicles.[5] The single debuted at number 28 on the Oricon single charts.[6]

Her second single was titled "Hatenaki Michi", and was released on November 25, 2009.[7] It was the featured ending song for a new anime named Tegamibachi. The singled peaked at number 33 on the weekly Oricon chart.[8][9]

Himeka's first cover album, Anison: Utattemita, was released on March 3, 2010.[10] Her third single, "Mirai e...", was released on May 26, 2010. It was featured as the ending theme in the anime Senkō no Night Raid.[11] Himeka's first digital single, "La la la, Sekai o Hitotsuni", was released in July 2010. The song was an official support song for the World Cosplay Summit 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.[12]

Himeka's first original album titled "Himekanvas" has been released on November 31, 2011, and includes all her released singles, seven original songs and two cover songs.[13] On February 12, 2012, Himeka gave her first solo live concert in the Shibuya Boxx hall.[14] The concert sold out.[15]

On July 1, 2012, Himeka confirmed that, in April 2012, she had moved to a new label named Mages./amuleto.[16] Later, it was confirmed that she would release a new single named "Where I Belong" scheduled to be released on October 24, 2012.[17] The song would be the ending theme for a series named Audrey no Kami Appli Shin Seiki Up Date.

It was announced not long after, that she was releasing a song under the name "AG7" with 7 other Animax Anison Grand Prix winners. The song is named Endless Nova and is going to be released on July 23, 2014. It will be included on a single released by the latest Anison Grand Prix winner named Tatsuyuki Kobayashi.[18]

On April 1, 2014, it was announced that she was no longer signed to a label.[19][non-primary source needed] On her Twitter, she did express that she will continue to pursue a career in music.[20] After that, in April 2015, the doujin single "STAY DIAMOND / Because of you" was released as a duo "HIME×KANA" with Kanako Kodera.

''Himeka'' is a Canadian singer known for her contributions to anime music after winning the Animax Anisong Grand Prix in 2008. Born Catherine St. Onge to French-Canadian descent, she adopted the stage name Himeka and relocated to Japan to pursue a career in the anime song industry following her victory in the competition, which saw her outcompete over 3,000 entrants to secure a professional recording contract. Her time in the Japanese music industry was marked by challenges, as she publicly shared frustrations regarding working conditions and industry practices in 2015. She is no longer active in Japan and has returned to Canada, maintaining a private life since then.

Early life

Childhood and early interests

Catherine St. Onge, who later performed under the stage name Himeka, was born on July 20, 1981, in Quebec, Canada. Of French-Canadian descent, she grew up in Quebec and was bilingual in French and English. From a young age, she developed interests in music. At age 12, she began to learn English to understand Disney cartoons broadcast in English. At age 13, she created a fictional character named "Himeka" in a story she wrote, which later became her stage name. Her early creative pursuits were primarily self-directed and focused on storytelling and performance before any significant exposure to Japanese media.

Interest in anime and Japanese culture

Himeka's interest in anime and Japanese culture emerged at the age of 15 when she was deeply impressed by the anime series Sailor Moon. Despite not understanding Japanese at first, she became captivated by the characters and visual style, which prompted her to explore Japanese culture more broadly. This discovery shifted her earlier enthusiasm for Disney stories toward anime, leading to an obsession with Sailor Moon and its themes of personal growth and perseverance despite imperfections. She identified strongly with the teenage protagonists, who mirrored her own age and experiences of overcoming self-doubt to become stronger. Motivated by this fascination, Himeka began watching other anime in their original Japanese language and studied pronunciation independently. She developed moderate proficiency in Japanese through self-study, including learning characters and reading by looking up Sailor Moon lyrics in a dictionary. The experience solidified her long-term career aspiration to become an anison singer in Japan. This phase remained entirely personal and formative, centered on deepening her appreciation for anime and Japanese culture without any professional music activities or releases.

Move to Japan

Relocation and Animax Anison Grand Prix victory

In 2008, Himeka relocated to Japan to pursue a singing career focused on anime music, motivated by her longstanding passion for Japanese animation and culture. She arrived in March of that year on a working holiday visa and soon entered the Second Annual Animax Anison Grand Prix, a national singing competition organized by Animax that attracted aspiring performers from across Japan. Competing under her stage name, she won the contest in 2008, delivering a final performance that strongly impressed the judges. As a 27-year-old Canadian living in Tokyo at the time, her victory marked a significant breakthrough. The win provided her with the opportunity to secure a professional contract, enabling her entry into the anime music industry.

Music career

Professional debut and Sony Music period

Himeka made her professional debut under Sony Music Japan International on May 27, 2009, with the single "Asu e no Kizuna," which served as the opening theme for the anime adaptation of Valkyria Chronicles. Later that year, on November 25, 2009, she released her second single "Hatenaki Michi," which was featured as an ending theme for the anime Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee. In early 2010, Himeka released her first album, the cover collection Anison: Utattemita (also known as Love Anison: Utattemita), on March 3, 2010, showcasing her renditions of popular anime songs. She followed with the single "Mirai e…" on May 26, 2010, which served as the ending theme for the anime Senkou no Night Raid. That July, on July 14, 2010, she released her first digital single "La la la, Sekai o Hitotsuni," composed as an official support song for the World Cosplay Summit 2010 in Nagoya. Her first original studio album, Himekanvas, appeared on November 30, 2011, marking her debut full-length collection of original material. On February 12, 2012, Himeka performed her first solo live concert at Shibuya Boxx, an event that sold out. In 2012, she transferred from Sony Music Japan International to Mages/amuleto.

Transfer to Mages/amuleto and later releases

In April 2012, Himeka transferred from Sony Music Japan International to Mages./amuleto for management and releases under the affiliated 5pb. Records label. Her first single under the new arrangement was "Where I Belong," released on October 24, 2012, which served as the ending theme for the TV Tokyo variety program Audrey no Kami Appli Shin Seiki Up Date. In 2013, she released the single "Kagiriaru Yume" on November 27, which served as the ending theme for the video game Rozen Maiden: Wechseln Sie Welt ab. That same year, Himeka contributed chorus vocals to the HONEY TRAP original soundtrack and performed vocals on tracks for the game Liberation Maiden SIN, including its ending theme. On April 1, 2014, Himeka's contract with 5pb. Records expired, after which she announced she was no longer signed to any label and would operate as a freelance artist.

Return to Canada and end of active career

In June 2014, Himeka returned to Canada after being unable to renew her work visa due to a lack of steady employment in the Japanese music industry following the expiration of her contract with 5pb. Records on April 1, 2014. Earlier that year, she had publicly sought a new label amid visa and budget constraints that threatened her ability to remain in Japan. On the day of her departure, she posted an emotional tweet expressing her reluctance to leave and her hope to one day return through "the power of space," while affirming her love for her fans. In April 2015, Himeka released the doujin single "STAY DIAMOND / Because of you" as part of the duo HIME×KANA with singer Kanako Kodera. Later that August, she voiced deep frustrations with the Japanese music industry in a series of tweets, expressing regret over her participation in the Animax Anison Grand Prix, describing persistent mistreatment as a foreigner, and stating that the industry had treated her "like garbage" despite her efforts. She also announced beginning two new lines of non-music work in Canada during this period, later specifying she would focus on one that better suited her. No confirmed professional music releases or activities in Japan have been reported since 2015, and Himeka has since maintained a private life with no public resumption of her singing career.
