Early life
Birth and background
Jack Tan, born Chek Yao Tan on March 3, 1991, in Malaysia, is a Malaysian actor.[1] Sources describe him as Kuala Lumpur-born, indicating his origin in the capital city.[3][2] He is the second child among five siblings—two boys and three girls—in a family that operated a food machinery repair factory.[2] Growing up, Tan learned aspects of the family trade from his father, including skills like repairing household appliances such as televisions and toasters.[2] His family's background influenced his early interests, though he later pursued a different path.[2]Career
Entry into acting and early roles
Jack Tan began his acting career with roles in Taiwanese and Chinese television dramas starting in 2009, alongside his work as a singer. He made his feature film debut in Shuttle Life (2017), where he portrayed Ah Qiang in the Malaysian drama directed by Tan Seng Kiat.[5][1] His performance as a young man navigating family tragedy and mental health struggles garnered early recognition, earning him the Best Actor award in the Asian New Talent category at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival.[6] He also won Best Actor at the 1st ASEAN-China Film Festival that same year.[7] Tan later described Shuttle Life as his debut film, noting it marked his first attendance at the Malaysian Film Festival.[8] Following this, Tan took on supporting roles in a series of Malaysian and regional films. In 2018, he appeared as Jason in the Singaporean mystery A Land Imagined, directed by Yeo Siew Hua. That same year, he played Leong in the sports drama Rise: Ini Kalilah and Gwailo in the crime thriller Fly by Night.[1] In 2019, he portrayed Hao Ge in The Paradise. These early credits built his presence in Southeast Asian independent cinema.[1]Rise to recognition
In the early 2020s, Jack Tan's career gained increased visibility as he transitioned from supporting roles to more prominent positions in both local and international productions. In 2020, he appeared in Miss Andy, a Taiwanese-Malaysian co-production directed by Teddy Chin that explored themes of gender identity and migrant struggles, with Tan playing the supporting role of Teck alongside leads Lee Lee-zen and Ruby Lin. [9] This project represented his involvement in cross-border filmmaking, expanding his exposure beyond Malaysia. [10] By 2022, Tan featured in the major Malaysian action film Air Force The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa, directed by Zulkarnain Azhar, where he portrayed Gabriel in a story centered on a PASKAU special forces team. [11] The film achieved significant commercial success in Malaysia, grossing RM8 million at the box office after four days of release and signaling plans for international screenings in markets including Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. [12] This role marked a shift toward larger-scale productions and action-oriented narratives, building on his earlier work to establish greater recognition within the Malaysian film industry and regionally. [2]Breakthrough with Abang Adik
Jack Tan received widespread acclaim for his role in the 2023 film Abang Adik, a Malaysian-Taiwanese co-production directed by Jin Ong.[13] He portrayed Zhang Wen-di, also known as Adik, the younger brother in a story centered on two undocumented orphan brothers navigating poverty and crime in Malaysia.[13] His performance earned widespread acclaim and propelled him to international recognition.[14] Tan received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 60th Golden Horse Awards in 2023.[4] He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Asian Film Awards in 2024.[4] In addition, Tan won Best Supporting Actor at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards in 2024 and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for a Motion Picture at the Golden Panda Awards in 2025 for his work in the film.[4] Abang Adik was selected as Malaysia's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.[15] This milestone, combined with the film's festival successes and Tan's accolades, established him as a prominent talent in Asian cinema.[4]Recent and upcoming work
Following his breakthrough performance in Abang Adik (2023), which elevated his profile in Malaysian and international cinema, Jack Tan has sustained momentum with roles in diverse regional productions. [14] In 2023, he starred in the Taiwanese film See You at the Rally (also known as Wo han wo de sai che lao ba), directed by Kanny Chang Shu-Wei, where he portrayed Chen Bo-Jun. [16] Tan then appeared in the 2024 Malaysian feature Gold, playing Cheah Liek Hou. [1] He is slated to feature in Measure in Love, a Hong Kong production set for release in 2025, in a supporting role. [17] These projects reflect his growing involvement across Malaysian, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong film industries. [1]Awards and nominations
