Family and upbringing
Jake Short was born on May 30, 1997, in Indianapolis, Indiana.[11][12] He is the son of James Kramer Short, an intensivist who passed away on January 26, 2004, at the age of 40, and Kimberly Kennan Hankins Short, a plastic surgeon.[13][14][12] Following his father's death when Short was six years old, his mother raised him and his siblings in Indianapolis, maintaining a close-knit family environment amid the challenges of loss.[15] Short has one older brother, Austin James "AJ" Short, and two younger sisters, Gillian Marie Short and Jessilyn Kimberly Short.[3][16] The family shared a typical Midwestern upbringing in Indiana, with Short spending his early years engaging in local activities alongside his siblings before the household dynamics shifted after his father's passing.[3]Relocation and early aspirations
At the age of nine, Jake Short relocated from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Los Angeles, California, to live with his grandmother and pursue acting opportunities, marking a significant transition driven by his emerging interest in the performing arts.[17] This move was supported by his mother, a plastic surgeon, who encouraged his aspirations despite her medical background.[12] In California, Short lived with his grandmother to facilitate his early acting pursuits, while the rest of his family remained in Indiana.[3] His initial passion for acting was sparked by his older brother, who had started taking classes, leading Short to join at around nine and a half years old and quickly develop a strong affinity for the craft.[18] As part of his personal life during this formative period, Short adopted a pet dog named Skipper from the Glendale Humane Society, who provided companionship amid his new surroundings and budding ambitions.[11]Career
Early roles and breakthroughs
Jake Short made his acting debut in 2007 at the age of 10, portraying Child Daniel in the television movie The Anna Nicole Smith Story, a biopic about the life of the model and television personality. This minor role marked his entry into professional acting, following his family's relocation to California to support his burgeoning interest in the industry.[11] Short's first feature film appearance came in 2009 with the role of Nose Noseworthy, a germaphobic bully, in Robert Rodriguez's family comedy Shorts, which provided him with a significant supporting part and exposure in a major theatrical release. That same year, he began securing guest spots on television, including the recurring role of Scott Smith, a troubled boy entangled in a kidnapping plot, across three episodes of Showtime's Dexter in season four. He also appeared as Kenny Coffey in the Disney XD series Zeke and Luther, playing a skateboard enthusiast in the episode "Bros Go Pro." In 2010 and 2011, Short continued building his resume with smaller projects, such as the lead role of Adam in the short film It Is Dark in Here, where he depicted a child discovering his mother's affair, and a guest appearance as Timmy in an episode of CBS's #! My Dad Says*. Prior to these, he had accumulated experience through numerous commercials, starting with his first booking shortly after moving to Los Angeles at age nine, which helped him transition from local theater to on-camera work.[11] As a child actor navigating Hollywood, Short faced the typical rigors of auditions and typecasting but grew through consistent roles that honed his skills in both comedic and dramatic contexts.[19]Disney Channel prominence
Jake Short's breakthrough came with his casting as Fletcher Quimby in the Disney Channel sitcom A.N.T. Farm, which aired from 2011 to 2014. In the series, Fletcher is portrayed as a quirky, 14-year-old artistic genius and dilettante, skilled in various media such as painting and sculpture, and harbors a persistent crush on the protagonist, Chyna Parks.[20] The show follows Chyna, an 11-year-old musical prodigy, and her gifted friends—including Fletcher and the intellectually brilliant Olive—as they navigate the challenges of the Advanced Natural Talents (A.N.T.) program at a high school dominated by older students.[21] Short, then around 14 years old, beat out other young actors for the role after building a resume with early guest appearances that caught Disney's attention.[22] Following the success of A.N.T. Farm, Short transitioned to the lead role of Oliver in the Disney XD series Mighty Med, which ran from 2013 to 2015. Oliver is depicted as a comic book enthusiast and the more cautious, intelligent half of a best-friend duo with the impulsive Kaz; together, they become interns at Mighty Med, a secret hospital treating injured superheroes from the comic book world.[23] The series blends humor and action as the boys balance everyday teen life with high-stakes medical emergencies involving caped patients.[24] Short reprised the character in guest and recurring capacities, appearing in the 2015 crossover episode "Lab Rats vs. Mighty Med" on Lab Rats and as a main cast member in the 2016 spinoff Lab Rats: Elite Force, where Oliver joins a team of young superheroes.[25][26] These roles significantly boosted Short's visibility among young audiences, establishing him as a prominent Disney star during his teenage years.[22] Mighty Med's premiere drew 1.02 million viewers, marking it as Disney XD's second-highest-rated live-action debut at the time and reflecting strong fan engagement with Short's portrayal of the nerdy yet heroic Oliver.[27] Fans particularly appreciated his comedic timing and relatable character arcs, though the consecutive similar roles in youth-oriented fantasy and school comedies led to perceptions of typecasting as a quintessential Disney teen lead.[22] Behind the scenes, Short managed demanding filming schedules while prioritizing education, with on-set tutors providing schooling during production breaks on A.N.T. Farm, where he notably enjoyed science classes amid the Hollywood Center Studios shoots.[28] This arrangement allowed him to maintain academic progress alongside long hours of rehearsing stunts and dialogue for both series.[28]Post-Disney and recent projects
Following the conclusion of his Disney Channel commitments, Jake Short began transitioning to more mature roles in independent cinema and international television. In 2018, he starred as Bradley in the unaired ABC pilot Man of the House. He took the lead role of Cyrus Nollen, a tech-savvy high school hacker navigating romance and social media intrigue, in the teen comedy #Roxy, directed by Michael Kennedy. This marked his entry into feature films outside the family-oriented Disney ecosystem. The following year, Short portrayed Sai, a college student entangled in a web of secrets and mysterious deaths, in the psychological thriller Confessional, directed by Brad T. Gottfred, showcasing his ability to handle darker, ensemble-driven narratives.[29][30][31][9] In 2020, Short expanded internationally by starring as Mattie Sullivan, an ambitious young footballer, in the BBC Two comedy series The First Team, created by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley. The show, which followed the misadventures of three rookie Premier League players, represented a shift to British humor and adult-oriented storytelling, airing six episodes and highlighting Short's comedic timing in a non-American production. This role underscored his growing versatility beyond U.S. teen fare. Building on this momentum, Short continued with lead parts in independent projects, including Mikey, a road-tripping friend in the coming-of-age comedy This Is the Year (2020), directed by David Henrie; Neil, a self-conscious high schooler in the action-comedy Supercool (2021), directed by Teppo Airaksinen; and Larson, a quirky best friend aiding in sexual self-discovery, in the Hulu rom-com Sex Appeal (2022), directed by Talia Osteen. These films emphasized ensemble dynamics and genre-blending, from humor to light drama.[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40] Short's television work in the mid-2020s included guest appearances that further demonstrated his range. In 2023, he played Ralph Bailey, a young journalist, in an episode of the Apple TV+ limited series Lessons in Chemistry, starring Brie Larson and focusing on 1960s scientific ambition. More recently, in 2025, Short guest-starred as Phineas Dougherty, the owner of a chaotic influencer house, in the episode "Content Warning" of ABC's High Potential, a crime procedural led by Kaitlin Olson. These roles allowed him to engage with prestige drama and procedural formats, respectively.[41][42] As of 2025, Short is set to star as Ethan in the indie romantic comedy Where We Meet, directed by Mike Southerly.[10] In 2022, Short co-launched the podcast Hit the Brake (later rebranded as The Sit and Chat) with fellow former Disney actor Bradley Steven Perry. The show features candid discussions on their child acting experiences, industry hurdles like typecasting after teen roles, and personal growth, with guests from their Disney past sharing similar stories. Through the podcast and his project choices, Short has actively worked to diversify into comedy, thriller, and dramatic genres, addressing post-Disney challenges such as audition biases and the need to prove range beyond youthful characters.[43][44]Filmography
